Our objective is to teach our kids about the Aboriginal culture and recognize perspectives.
To analyze a work of text for literary devices

Essential Learnings (What do you want the students to learn about your culture?)
We want them to learn the significance of racial equality, and the history of Aboriginal colonization.

Activities:
Organize students: 5 min
1. Give students numbers that correspond to their tables.
2. Seat students in 4 groups.
Brief Intro: 2 min:
1. Give students background information about precolonial Aborigines.
Poem Dissection 15 min
1. Brief introduction, poems on desk (The Old Bloodwood)
2. Have students annotate for a specific topic (Diction,
Syntax,Metaphor/Simile, Imagery), with one group member
accompanying each group for assistance.
3. Discuss as a class, emphasize before/after colonization, symbolism
Differentiation Nation 30 mins
1. Same groups of 4-6 (Colonizers or Aborigines), two of each
2. Have students pull nameplates
3. Mr. Tierney -style Game (Students get events, and choose responses
based upon their group. 5 events
4. Reflect upon how the different groups behaved, compare with
history
