The Minister for the Environment,
The Honourable Tony Burke,
Parliament House
Canberra ACT 2600.
Dear Minister,
(WORLD HERITAGE MINOR MODIFICATION TO THE TASMANIAN
WILDERNESS WORLD HERITAGE AREA)
Further to our meeting of 3 November 2011, we are writing to request that you
further the proposal for a minor modification to the Tasmanian Wilderness
World Heritage Area (TWWHA) as proposed at that meeting. Specifically, |
request that the Independent Verification Group's assessment of World Heritage
values pertaining to the minor modification be expedited.
I note that over $60 million of taxpayers’ funds have already flowed to
contractors, Forestry Tasmania, Gunns and regional development projects under
the IGA; that not one hectare of native forest has yet to be protected; and that
logging is still proceeding in the 430,000 ha that were supposed to receive
immediate protection under the August IGA.
At the 3 November meeting Senator Milne and I were pleased that you were
prepared to consider this proposal. We believe that, in the light of the
expenditure and logging outlined above, it would be an act of good faith by the
Government to move to protect these areas of World Heritage value as a matter
of urgency.
lemphasise that this minor World Heritage modification would be only the first
stage of the full extension of the TWWHA (sone 805,000 ha over the next three
years), and is a subset of the protection of the full 572,000 ha of high-
conservation-value forests currently being assessed.
Yours sincerely,
—
