Application Note : APP0000704.doc Title : 5MC & 2PC Fault codes Explained

23/05/06

This application note gives a brief description of the causes of the various fault codes for 2PC & 5MC based softstarters.

Fault Code (5MC)

1 Phase Loss
2 Too Hot
3 Comms
4 SCR Firing
5 SCR Signal
6 SCR Signal

7 Sensing Signal

8 Motor, SCR Los

9 Sensing Signal
10 SCR Shorted
11 Low Current
12 C/L Time Out
13 Overload
14 Shearpin
15 Thermistor
16 User
17 Comms Timeout
Stopped. Cooling

Explanation
Input side phase loss at the start, during the ramp and after full
voltage.
The heatsink is above the maximum allowed temperature or i/p open
circuit.
The unit will trip if there are a number of errors in serial
communications but communications are still active.
Short circuit thyristor after full voltage
Short circuit thyristor during the ramp and after full voltage.
Motor side phase loss during the ramp and after full voltage.
Input side phase loss after full voltage.
Short circuit thyristor during the ramp and after full voltage.
Motor side phase loss during the ramp and after full voltage.
Short circuit thyristor or external noise during the ramp and after full
voltage
Motor side phase loss during the ramp and after full voltage.
Short circuit thyristor at the start.
Motor side phase loss at the start.
Short circuit thyristor or external noise during the ramp and after full
voltage
Short circuit thyristor during the ramp.
Motor side phase loss during the ramp.
Has fallen below the current level set for the period of time set. Only
active during the running stage.
Has exceeded the time set for the period of current limit during the
ramp
Has exceeded the overload level and the overload delay set. Active
at all stages of operation.
Has exceeded the current level set for the period of time set. Only
active during the running stage.
Has exceeded the motor thermistors temperature rise curve
A trip input from the user to the soft starter.
Serial communications have been lost.
Time for which the soft starter is not allowed to restart to allow
heatsink cooling.

MFE (2PC) Trip Flashes

If tripped the MFE LED will repeatedly flash the number of times shown below then pause and repeat.

1) Phase Loss 2)Thermal Switch 3)Ramp Fault 4) Shearpin 5) Watchdog 6) Selector Switch
