COMM 3144 Unit 3

Organizational Writing
To complete this assignment, each group will select a nonprofit organization and create
organizational communication pieces for the organization. Pieces should meet the
following communication goals: (1) educate the audience about the work being done by
your organization and (2) persuade college students to get involved with the
organization. For this assignment, you will work in groups to complete the following
pieces: (1) Organizational Backgrounder, (2) radio PSA (script only) and (3) speech
(which will be delivered to the class Nov. 1).
Assignment
For this unit, you will work as a team to complete the following:
(1) Backgrounder
a. Write a 1-2 page backgrounder to provide the class with essential
background information about your organizations history, mission and
how the mission is fulfilled.
(2) PSA
a. Write a script for a radio PSA. The radio PSA will play on Internet
streaming radio services such as Pandora and Spotify.
b. Use template for formatting radio PSA script
i. Create :15, :30, and :60 second versions
ii. Include all three versions on the same word document
(3) Speech
a. Write and deliver a speech persuading the class to donate money to your
nonprofit organization.
b. Use template for formatting speech.
(4) Brochure
a. Create a brochure that can be distributed to the class to accompany your
speech (use InDesign).
b. Brochures should include a 6-panel design (see textbook)
c. See below for InDesign document set up; use columns and margins to
create three panels per page. Let me know if you need help with this.

Deadlines:
Oct. 20 class will not meet, groups are encouraged to meet to start working on
the project
Oct. 25 27 Lab Day; work in class in groups
Nov. 1 class will not meet; groups are encouraged to meet during class time
Nov. 3 AP style quiz; class will not meet (groups can meet to work on project)
Nov. 8 in-class presentation of speeches and brochures
Nov. 10 Unit 3 lecture

This is a group project. Working in communication, especially PR, means being part of a
team. Rarely will you complete a project on your own. I expect all members of the group
to contribute equally to the success of the project. In order to hold all group members
accountable for their work, each group member will complete a peer evaluation of their
group at the end of the assignment. These peer evaluation scores will be factored into
the overall participation grade for the class.
