Subject:Proposaltostudythefeasibilityofconstructingagymnasticslockerroom

Purpose
Inthisproposal,Iamrequestingpermissiontoresearchthefeasibilityofdevelopingalockerroomforthe
HamlineUniversitygymnasticsteam.Iwillthenconductfurtherresearchonceapprovedandwritea
reportonwhetheritisfeasibleforaHamlineUniversitygymnasticslockerroomshouldbebuilt.Upon
completionofthesetasks,thereportwillbesubmittedbyNovember27,2016.

Summary
HamlineUniversitycurrentlyhaslockerroomsformanyofitsdivisionthreeathleticsportssuchas
football(74),basketball(32),soccer(49),lacrosse(20),track(145)andvolleyball(17).Thesportslisted
ashavingtheirownlockerroomdonotincludetheoffcampusathleticswhichalsohavelockerroomsat
therespectedplayingarea.HamlineUniversitysfacilitiesdonotcontainalockerroomforthe
gymnasticsteam.Lockerroomsincludeatminimum,adrylockerandteammeetingarea(Patton,2014).
Commonlythereareotherareassuchasashowering,toilet,andteamloungearea.Alockerroomforthe
gymnasticsteamshouldbeconstructedtoaidinthebenefitoftheteamssuccessforgymnasts,the
programandHamlineUniversity.
Iproposetoresearchthecostofbuildingalockerroomforonecollegeathleticteam,thebenefitsof
havingalockerroomforcollegeathleticteams,theopinionsofstudentsfromHamlineUniversity,and
componentsofotherdivisionthreeathleticlockerrooms.Mygoalofthisresearchistodetermineifitis
feasibleforHamlineUniversitytoconstructalockerroomforthegymnasticsteam.

Introduction

Asofrightnow,thereisnoteamlockerroomofferedtothegymnasticsteamatHamlineUniversity.
TherearehoweverlockerroomsofferedspecificallyforotherathleticsportsoftheUniversitywhich
includefootball,soccer,volleyball,lacrosse,track,andbasketball.Thereisasignificantneedforthe
constructionofalockerroomforthe27womenontheHamlineUniversitygymnasticsteam.
Currently,theHamlineUniversitygymnasticsteamutilizesthegenerallockerroomintendedforthe
publicoftheUniversity.Thereisatoiletspacewithtwotoilets,ashowerarea,andadrylockerarea.
Thedrylockerareahasthreesectionsoflockerswithabenchineach.Nonethelessthegymnastics
membresarenotallowedtostoretheirbelongingsinthelockersovernightwithoutpayingafee.Because
thegymnastsdonotspecificspacetostoretheirequipment,theyhavetobringtheirnecessitiesfor
practicesuchashairbrushes,hairties,deodorant,leotards,grips,braces,waterbottles,andtennisshoes
topracticewiththemeachday.
Theteampracticesfrom3pm6pmeveryMondaythroughThursdayand2pm4pmeveryFriday.
Anothercommonproblemwithnothavingadesignatedspaceisthatthepubliclockerroomisclosedto
thepublicattimeswhereanopposingteamofanotherathleticteamsuchassoccer,hasagame.Theonly
otherbathroomnearthegymnasticsgymnasiuminWalkerFieldHouseisdownthehall,aroundthe
corner,andfurtherdownthenexthall.Thereareonlytwostallsavailableinthebathroom.Allofthese

factsbeingsaid,thespaceisnotcompatiblewith27studentathletesoccupyingthespaceofWalkerField
Houseonadailybasis.

In20152016,therewere2,122undergraduates.Ofthe2,122,516studentswerealsostudentathleteswho
participatedinacollegiatesport.Ofthestudentsthatcompletedmajorsin2016,18.7%werescience
majors(HamlineUniversity,2016).Onenecessaryandtimeconsumingcomponentofsciencemajorsis
labs.Thelabsforscienceclassesareeitherfrom8am11amor1pm4pm,whereithasbecomemore
commonthatthelabsbefrom1pm4pminadditiontoclassesthatoccurfrom12:40pm3:40pm.This
meansthatgymnastswhomustcomelatetopracticefromtheirlabsorclasseswillbecarryingnotonly
theirgymbagsforpracticebutalsotheirbackpacks.Iftherearemultiplegirlsthatcomeinafterclassor
lab,therearecommonlynotsufficientamenitiesforthemtochangeandprepareforpractice,thepractice
timeisfurtherdelayedforsaidathletes.
Therearetypicallyfourspacesofanathleticteamslockerroom:atoiletarea,ashowerarea,adrylocker
area,andateammeetingspace/lounge(Patton2014).Currently,thegymnasticsteamatHamline
Universitybringstheirbelongingssuchastheirgymbags,backpacks,clothing,shoes,andcoatsintothe
gymandsetitallnexttothelowbeamandvaultrunwayagainstthewalltotheleftofthemaindoorina
spacethatis2x16.Thereare27girlsonthegymnasticsteamwhobringatleastonebagwiththemto
practiceeverydayleavingnoextraspacetostoreanythingelse.Alotofthetime,thearticlesandbags
alsohappentogooverontothevaultrunway.Thesebagsontherunwayareadistractionandnegatively
affectthesafetyofthegymnastsattemptingtoperformthelowbeamandvault.
Duringtheseason,OctoberthroughMarch,itiscommonfortheteamtoutilizeaniPadforvideoreview
ofskillsandroutines.Videoanalysisallowsforthecoachandathletetoviewtheskillsattemptedfrom
differentviewswithouttherepetitivetiringmotionoftheathlete.Theanalysisalsoallowsforthecoach
andathletetoandanalyzethewholeroutineafteracompetitionorpractice.Theabilitytostopthe
frames,slowmotion,andhighshutterratesallowsforthecaptureofcriticalmomentsinaskill(Cassidy,
Stanley,&Bartlett,2006).CurrentlyitisnotidealforthecoachestoreviewskillsonjustaniPad.If
therewerethecapabilityofhavingateammeeting/conferencecenterwithalargetelevision,theprocess
wouldbesmootherandmorebeneficialtoall.

Qualifications
IamajunioratHamlineUniversitywhereIammajoringinexercisescience.Icompleted92credithours
throughStLouisUniversitypriortobeginningmyundergraduateatHamlineUniversity.Icompleteda
researchprojectforplantandanimalphysiologyaboutthetranspirationprocessofplants.Onsuch
researchIreceivedaB+.Inaddition,IamalsoapartoftheHamlineUniversitygymnasticsteamand
havebeenforthepasttwoyears.
