SOLID CONTENT
Drilling Fluid Lab Report Five

Objective
Measuring Solid Content/Percentage in drilling fluid in respect to liquid percentage which is water to
control the mud flow, mud rheology and the formation of mud cake

Equipment
Barite Mud Sample
Baroid Sand Content Set
1. Funnel: it is used to pour the samples either mud or water in the sand content tube
2. Plastic Cylinder it contains Net(Screen/sieve) (200 mch/inch) to block the sand content in the mud
3. Sand Content Tube; it is used to determine the sand content in the mud as a percentage

Pour the mud sample until reach mud to here

Add distilled water until reach water to here
Hold the Sand Content tube firmly and block the orifice with your thumb
Shake the solution (mud sample & water) for 30 sec
Pour the Solution into the plastic cylinder through the net
Remove the funnel from the bottom of the plastic cylinder and replace it upside down and put
in on the Sand Content Tube
7. Add Distilled water into the plastic cylinder through the net to push any sticky sand on the net
8. Wait for 20 min until all the suspended grains in the Sand Content Tube is settled down
9. Record the results in percentage then transfer it into ml

Results/Comment
The Results Recorded to be;
Percentage
Mili-Liter
4%
4*27.5/100
The Percentage of the solid content is the drilling mud is 4% and to get the ML value we will multiply by
27.5 ML which is the total volume until mud to here so it will be 1.1 ML as a Solid content

Sources of error

Parallax Error as reading is not taken in a perpendicular

Tap Water Not Distilled water as tap water contain some solid content
Funnel/ Plastic cylinder/ Sand content Tube must be well cleaned and dry
Procedures is not taken accurately according to mud to here sign & water to here sign
Some solid Content is stuck in the net and is not recorded
The Solution of mud & water is not shake well before pouring in the cylinder
While shaking, the sand content tube is not firmly closed by the thumb
