Lesson Activity: Design as a PBL problem form Mathematical Content Knowledge Class.
Original Class Task (building upon experience): This was a class incentive the kids voted on:
build a fort as a class.
Math Content Knowledge: I can multiply mixed numbers to solve real world problems
Differentiated : I can add mixed numbers to solve real world problems
Related Algebraic Task:
When we build our fort we noticed that we didnt have enough blankets, we had 12 blankets
(photgraph labeld with whole number and to show small blankets, cant be included here do
to students in the picture).

Zaniah suggested that everyone bring 1 blankets or sheets (1/2 blanket would be a
small blanket, and the whole is a full size sheet). Zaniah thinks that if everyone (all 21
students) brought one for themselves and a smaller blanket for the class we would have
enough.
Jvion thinks that wouldnt be enough blankets to cover the whole classroom. He thinks
everyone should bring 2 blankets or sheets. He says this would be enough and there
might even be extras.

Questions

List three strategies for adding and/or multiplying mixed numbers.

Locate the words that are key to understanding the problem.
Explain and discuss what Zaniah is saying in your own words.
Explain and discuss what Jvion is saying in your own words.
Write and solve an equation that represents how many blankets we
would have if we followed Zaniahs suggestion.

Analyzing

Write and solve an equation that represents how many blankets we

would have if we followed Jvions suggestion.
Compare and contrast your equations and solutions to Zaniah and
Jvions suggestions with your math partner. How did your partner solve
their problem?

Evaluating

How can you use math vocabulary to support your work?

Whos suggestion do you agree with? Defend and support your

position with evidence and organized data.

Creating

Develop another way to show or organize your work to solve this

problem.
Create and write another solution to supplying enough blankets for the
fort. Is there a better alternative than what Zaniah and Jvion thought
of?

Extension: Mr. Stewarts class (20 students) wants to join us for the fort. We will need at least
60 blankets or sheets to have enough materials. How many blankets does Miss. Bs class need
to bring in to create a fort for both classes? What if Mr. Stewarts class and Miss. Bs class
brought in blankets, how many would each student need to bring in then?
