Written Literacy Reflection
Our written literacy unit was covered first in this course and was
particularly the most difficult for me. This was my first college writing course
and I found it quite difficult to transition from the way I had been taught in
high school. The This I Believe was extremely difficult for me to understand
and grasp the concept of. I had never before been asked to write about what
I believed in. I ultimately decided to make the paper very personal and write
about a family trauma that caused a shift in my faith. I wanted the paper to
be about something meaningful to me and I also wanted to use it as an
opportunity to have Professor Douglas get to know me as a person and not
just a writer. Our This I Believe papers were the Professors first look into
who we were. I did not want to take from it simply that I am a person of high
beliefs but also that I am a person of passion and deep commitment and
love. I also attempted to have the Professor better get to know me through
my Proust Questionnaire. In my responses I was both detailed and
thorough. I felt as though going into a writing course where the Professor had
free will to our journals I should have a certain level of a relationship built.
This relationship is what I tried to establish through my first pieces of writing.
