Studio Eight (Credibility)
When looking into a source for credibility theres a couple of things that you should
consider before declaring it a viable source to use in your work. The date of when the text was
published is very important. Information that was news to the public years ago is now common
sense. When gas was first invented to put into combustion engines in 1891, the public went wild
with this new break through, but now everyones familiar with gas and what its used for, so
having a recently new published text is important for its credibility. The authors main point in
the source should also agree with the point that youre trying to provide or support. For example,
having an article that just briefly mentions your topic doesnt really help you prove that your
argument or statement is valid. The experience and education of the author of the source should
be highly respected and trustworthy. They should be highly educated about their topic, and/or
well experienced, so that they can be trusted to be a reliable source. Citing an article about
fracking that a freshmen college student wrote isnt a trust worthy source, the author isnt
experienced, hes not educated on the topic, and depending on the date it might not even be
relevant to your purpose. Using trustworthy sources can not only give you a strong argument but
it can also guarantee that youre a viable source. If everyone cited their work with trustworthy
sources the world wouldnt have to worry about which article to trust and not to trust, it would
all be factual. Other than finding a source that is credible, its important to make certain that
source goes along or reflects off of your purpose, and has no bias. Supporting your working with
trustworthy sources makes your work highly respected as well. Your source can also bring in
information that isnt commonly known, educating you and the reader. Sources should be
checked for credibility using these methods before being cited in work. Citing false source can
cause you too look just as foolish as the author of the source.
