Inquiry Question: How can we best help develop literacy in secondary school?
A) At Tatsikiisaapop middle school, staff are striving to increase student literacy. It is a school
wide approach to ensure that students are prepared for high school and long term success. As
such, they have implemented a daily five program that is to be completed in the mornings three
times a week. Since the students are a little older I hope to develop a series of activities that
incorporate the principles of daily five in an engaging way for this age group. This will be a
resource that all teachers can incorporate in their classroom if they choose.
B) During my time at this school I will be designing an activity-based resource to increase
literacy. This means that I will research different activities that can be quickly implemented to
maximize student practice and learning. I will develop a resource binder that has task cards,
suggestions for Daily 5 centers, book recommendations and other collaborative class activities
that promote literacy.
C) Timeline:
Sept. 5th-9th
o School wide testing
Sept. 11th Oct. 31st
o Develop approximately 30 task cards with corresponding rubrics rubrics
Nov. 1st Nov. 30th
o Research Daily 5 & CAF center suggestions
Dec. 1st- Dec. 10th
o Find First Nations and Young Adult Literature Recommendations
Dec. 10th-Dec. 23rd
o Create Resource Binder
D) I would like to have a full resource developed by the end of practicum. This will be a binder
to be kept at the school so that the other teachers can use in their own classroom during the
periods set aside for Daily 5.
