ENZYMES AND IT EFFECTS

Honor code: On my honor code, I have neither received nor given any unauthorized
aid on this assignment.

INTRODUCTION:
1) Enzymes are proteins and are found everywhere in nature. Enzymes also are
macromolecular biological catalysts. Enzymes are known to catalyze more
than 5,000 biochemical reaction types. Most enzymes are proteins. Enzymes
are central to every biochemical process that occurs in the body. The role of
enzymes in biological are increase the speed of function.
2) Enzymes are special proteins that control the speed of certain functions in the
body; without them, chemical reactions would take place too slowly to keep a
person alive. There are many different types of enzymes in the human body.
So it is really important. For example: Pepsin is the primary enzyme in your
stomach which breaks down proteins.
3) One of the factors that affects enzyme activity is the pH. If there are small
changes in the pH, the enzyme will denature and catalytic activity will be lost.
Another factor is the temperature. Enzyme-catalyzed reactions will have the
rate increased as the temperature increases. Because the enzymes are proteins,
they will become denatured and turn inactive at the higher temperatures.
4) This lab experiment help me to know the way that enzyme works and see how
the temperature affect on it. If the temperature increases, the enzyme will be
increased. If the temperature decreases, the enzyme will be decreased.
5) Enzymes produced the stimulus and combined with protein in liver to kept a
person alive. Hydrogen peroxide come from human body, it is harmful to our
body because Hydrogen peroxide can lead to the formation of toxic so it is
harmfu. Hydrogen Peroxide naturally breaks down into Water and oxygen gas
(+ some heat). Normally, it breaks down very slowly which is why we don't

notice anything strange. A enzyme is something that speeds up a chemical

reaction, enzyme would speed up this breakdown. In our blood cells, we have
something called catalase (an enzyme) which acts as a catalyst. It is one of the
most efficient catalysts known. In fact, many biological processes produce
hydrogen peroxide in our body and it is toxic to cells, it must be quickly
converted to prevent damage by the enzyme.
6) The hypothesis for the enzyme experiment: If the temperature increases, the
enzyme will be increased. If the temperature decreases, the enzyme will be
decreased.
MATERIAL:
- Liver
- Hot water
- Room temperature water
- Cold water
- Hydrogen peroxide
- Bowl
- Temperature measurement
- Time measurement
- Glass- marking pencil
- Paper towel
PROCEDURE:
Step1: Put on the safty material ( lab gloves, lab glasses ).

Step2: Put the raw liver into three bowls.

Step3: Put three bowls into 3 boxes, one box contains hot water, one box contains ice,
one box is room temperature water.
Step4: Take out a piece of liver in each box, then adding Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2).
Step5: Use the time measurement and temperature measurement to measure and
record the data.
Step6: Observe the reaction.
Step7: Clean-up and wash hands before leave the lab.

With hot water, it take the shortest time to react, about 10 seconds.
With cold water, it take the longest time to react, more than 30 seconds.
With room temperature water, it react in a certain time, faster than cold water and
slower than hot water.
DISCUSSION:
1) The temperature of the hot water about 34-30 degrees and the time at 12-18.6s. The
floats and more bubbles appear and faster than the cold water.
The cold water's temperature is 10 degrees and time about 35.5-41.76s, time to the
paper disk and bubbles much longer than hot experiments.
The average room temperature are between 26-27 degrees, time about 29.22-26.44s.
No changes between the attempts, because the room temperature are normal.
2) Yes, they do. The interaction always depended to the temperature. When the
temperature changes the interaction of enzyme, pH and the proteins would
change too.

3) The difference in temperature and the distance of time between attempts are
influence too much on the results. In the high temperature, time for the paper
disk floats and bubbles less than the low temperature and to opposite with the
low temperature.
4) To make sure not have big distance between time and temperature in three times.
And to ensure not have any different react of all three times.
5) To ensure that the neutral of temperatures between the trials. Since, then have more
accurate results for the analysis process.
RESEARCH QUESTION:
1) Enzymes work by lowering the energy of activation of a chemical reaction and
speeding up the rate of the chemical reaction. The molecule with which the
enzyme bonds is referred to as the substrate; the molecule that are created at
the end of the reaction is referred to as the product. The substrate bonds to a
small area of the enzyme termed the active site. When the enzyme is bonded to
the substrate, we call this the enzyme-substrate complex. Once the reaction is
complete, the enzyme releases the product and is ready to bond with another
substrate.
2) A change in pH can effect a function because it will change the temperature,
and due to a physical theory, if a thing is heat up, it will become bigger. Anh
when it reach a limit, it will destroy the function of an enzyme.
REFLECTION:
1) To know more about the affects of the enzyme in the body. The biological
catalyst in benefit everyday life.

2) I really don't like the smell of liver, it's very bad. The thing challenge me in this
experiment is the time, we don't have much time to try all the samples.
3) Yes, I do. Because of the large groups, so we took turns doing experiments,
sampling and recording results.
4)

Hope that there will be close cooperation between the members in the next
time. Do not late and need more focused while doing the experiment. To get
better results for the experiments later, more skills to take and analyze
samples.
