A5 1984 Essay
It is possible to have a society like 1984 in our ultra-technological modern times.
Take North Korea into account, it is a communist country very much like totalitarianism.
They even force thought criminals into concentration camps, where they are literally
worked to death. Totalitarianism can seemingly appear beneficial for its society
because the people will be united and can complete a common goal as a result of being
forced to think alike. It could not be beneficial because there will be no room for growth,
no different thoughts, no criticism, and no diversity. On the other extreme, our modern
society has adapted brainwashing tactics into everyday marketing strategies. Instead of
only having one choice of food and forcing everyone to eat the same thing, our
marketing strategies brainwash our youth to believe in their product. For example,
McDonalds mascot, Ronald McDonald the clown, makes the company appeal
trustworthy towards young children, manipulating their image as a family fun place. The
military, on the other hand, presents itself in a more romantic light, stating its a
brotherhood to protect the country, presenting itself as an exciting, powerful lifestyle,
almost like a superhero. With the power of the first amendment, people are allowed to

call out bias or propaganda within our media. Everyone is allowed to to voice their
opinions on subjects with little to no censorship. The main difference is, we are told to
not believe in everything we see without evidence-- to make choices as an individual,
we are allowed to question everything in a democracy. This doesnt only apply to food,
as consumers, we are overwhelmed with different choices of technology, education,
political stand points, internet services, fashion, etc.; we are forced to constantly do our
research to decide whats right. Often times, it causes animosity within our society, take
the presidential election for example, people are literally beating each other up over who
should be Americas next president.
