POVESTITORUL: Allow me to introduce myself! My name is Axel Lidenbrock and I'm
going to tell you about an amazing adventure that I lived a few years ago. My
uncle, Professor Otto Lidenbrock, put me in charge to keep the logbook of a
fabulous expedition. Here, I have my daily notes, as many as I could chronicle
and then save, in the spur of the events.

My uncle, Professor Otto Lidenbrock, lived in the most beautiful district of
Hamburg. He was an authentic scholar holding the chair of Mineralogy at the
university and I, in my dual capacity as nephew and orphan, I had become the
laboratory assistant for his experiments, for some time.

PROF. LIDENBROCK: Axel! Follow me, Axel! Something extraordinary happens!
(profesorul ine n mn o carte)
PROF. LIDENBROCK: This book...It's a priceless gem I discovered this morning while
poking around the antique shops! It dates back more than seven centuries!
AXEL: Is it in German?
PROF. LIDENBROCK: This is the definitely original work! Watch and admire these
strange characters!
(deodat un pergament nclit de pete, alunec dintre pagini i cade pe jos)
AXEL: But what is it?
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Theyre runes the forms are absolutely identical to those in the
manuscript! But what can it all mean?
PROF. LIDENBROCK: (privind cu lupa) Definitely this is a cryptogram ... This writing is
two centuries later!
(pe ecran se formeaz un dans al semnelor i literelor privite cu lupa)
(profesorul cerceteaz cartea cu lupa, pe ecran apar caracterele cu numele

PROF. LIDENBROCK: Arne Saknussemm! A scholar ... a celebrated alchemist of the
sixteenth century! I shall have the secret of this document and will neither eat
nor sleep until I have discovered it! Nor will you, Axel!
AXEL: Nooo!

2
PROF. LIDENBROCK: First of all, we must find out the language of this cipher! Seventynine are consonants and fifty-three vowels. This ratio is specific to southern
languages. It is therefore a language of the South.
AXEL: All right but what language is it?
PROF. LIDENBROCK: This Saknussemm was an educated man. He must naturally have
chosen the Latin! Axel, sit down and write! Im going to dictate the letter in
our alphabet corresponding to each of the Icelandic characters. Well see what
that gives! B [bi:], Z [zd], E [i:], H [ait], O [o], J [dei], I [ai]...
(pe ecran semnele si literele se aliniaz cnd pe orizontal cnd pe vertical)
POVESTITORUL: This work began to catch me, too, in a strange way. My head has been
heated, watching the sheet on which I had written the one hundred and thirtytwo letters, which seemed to be flying around me. I was having a sort of
hallucination; I was suffocating; I needed some fresh air. Absent-mindedly I
fanned myself using the piece of paper, with the back and the front passing
alternately before my eyes. Imagine my surprise when I thought I caught sight
of perfectly intelligible words during a quick turn of the sheet, just as the other
side came into view: Latin words like craterem and terrestre!
AXEL: Uncle! I have the key of the cipher! Look! Read!
PROF. LINDENBROCK: But it doesnt make sense!
AXEL: No sense when you begin at the beginning but from the last letter back to the
first...
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Oh, clever old Saknussemm, so you wrote your message
backwards!
Go down into the crater of Sneffels Yocul,
Which the shadow of Scartaris caresses,
Before the calends of July,
Oh, audacious traveller and you will reach the centre of the Earth.
I did it! Arne Saknussemm

PROF. LIDENBROCK: So, what time is it?
AXEL: Three oclock!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Good Lord! How quickly time goes on! We eat something and
then you can pack my trunk ...and yours, too!
AXEL: Packing off?
PROF. LIDENBROCK: We are do up our bags, Axel! We are going to leave for a journey!
AXEL: Noooo!!
SCENA 2
(n biroul su unchiul pregtete materiale)
POVESTITORUL: Going on a journey to the centre of the Earth! What a crazy idea! Next
day I thought that only scientific arguments would have stopped my uncle at
such an escapade! I went into his office. He has already been preparing for the
great scientific adventure!
AXEL: Uncle!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Axel, you were of great assistance to me. Where would I have
ended up without you? I will never forget that, my boy, and you will have your
fair share of the fame we are going to achieve!
AXEL: Allow me first to exhaust all possible objections concerning the document!

3
PROF. LIDENBROCK: You are no longer my nephew but my colleague. Pray proceed!
AXEL: I have to mention that nothing can demonstrate us the authenticity of this
document!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: What? And the book we discovered it in? Is it a mystification, too?
AXEL: All right, I accept that this Saknussemm wrote the message, but does it necessarily
follow that he actually carried out the journey?!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: That is what we are going to find out!
AXEL: Well, I will ask you what Yocul, Snaefells and Scartaris mean, since I have never
even heard of them!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Thats easy. This is the map of Iceland. Do you see this island?
(pe ecranul central apare o hart uria)
PROF. LIDENBROCK: It consists only of volcanoes and notice that they all bear the name
Yocul; this means glacier in Icelandic. And here it is the mountain of
Sneffels, one of the most remarkable on the island and definitely the most
famous in the whole world, if its crater leads to the centre of the globe!
AXEL: But this crater is obviously blocked up with lava and scorching rocks and so...!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: That Sneffels is an extinct crater for over 500 years!
AXEL: I doubt whether our scholar went down there himself, whether he carried out the
journey to the centre of the Earth and came back, whether he even undertook it.
PROF. LIDENBROCK: And the reason?!
AXEL: It is well known that the temperature increase by approximately one degree
centigrade for twenty metres you go below the surface of the globe! Now assuming
that this ratio remains constant, the temperature at the centre will be over two
hundred thousand degrees!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: So, Axel, you are afraid of melting! It is that science is eminently
perfectible First of all, it must be kept quiet, do you hear? In our world there
is a great number who, if they knew the content of this document would like to
arrive before us in the center of the Earth!
AXEL: Do you really think?
POVESTITORUL: Thus it was ended that memorable discussion from which hard I felt
quite myself! I was dealing with the speculations of a lunatic, or scientific
statements of a great genius? Should I do up my luggage or should not?
SCENA 3

POVESTITORUL: I decided to walk a little in the street and, soon I caught sight of my
little Grauben walking nimbly back, from the centre.
GRAUBEN: Axel! Oh, so you came to meet me you cant deny it!
AXEL: Yes, darling Grauben!
GRAUBEN: What's wrong, you're not quite yourself?
AXEL: Wrong, Grauben? All is absurd...unwiseness!
GRAUBEN: Axel! A man should try to prove himself by some great adventure...
something remarkable! Go ahead! Itll be a wonderful journey!
AXEL: Well see if you talk this way tomorrow!

POVESTITORUL: Next day at dawn my uncle was ready. His office was full of ropes,
torches, drums, iron hooks, pickaxes ... weapons, physical instruments
and electrical appliances, boxes of all kinds. Ten people wouldn't have
been able to carry them!
AXEL: So, were leaving!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Yes, my poor boy! Tomorrow, crack of dawn! Have you packed
your trunk?
AXEL: Yes... Yeah!! But Im just wondering what all the hurry is?
PROF. LIDENBROCK: If we waited until 22 June, we would arrive too late to see the
shadow of Scartaris playing along the crater of Sneffels!
(PROF. LIDENBROCK iese, rmne Axel i Grauben)
GRAUBEN: So, darling Axel, I see youre in better form and have calmed down during
the night!
AXEL: Calmed down?
GRAUBEN: Axel, your uncle is a staunch scholar, a man of great courage and you should
always remember that you have his blood in your veins. When you come back,
Axel, you will be a man, in his great force!
AXEL: Grauben...
GRAUBEN: Go, dear Axel, go... you are leaving a fiancee but you will come back to a
wife! (Grauben l srut i iese n fug.)

Faxa Bay, beside Reykjavik itself. A clear sky allowed us to see in the horizon a
high mountain with two points on top, a double cone covered with perpetual
snows.
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Look! Sneffels!
AXEL: Great!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Well, Axel, things are working out. We are over the worst!
AXEL: What do you mean, the worst?
PROF. LIDENBROCK: I mean its downhill all the way!
AXEL: In that sense, youre right; but having gone down, wont we eventually have to
come back up?

country of Iceland is below the ground not above!

POVESTITORUL: After a brief walk along the seafront of Reykjavik, I returned to the
hotel. My uncle was speaking with a robustly built young man, tall and
clearly of unusual strength.
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Dear Axel, he is Hans Bjelke, a skilled hunter who perfectly
speaks Danish!
AXEL: Glad to meet you!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: I got along with Hans to lead us along the coast, about 700 km.
Hes perfect! He can hardly realise the brilliant part he is going to play!
AXEL: So, hes coming with us...
PROF. LIDENBROCK: ...to the centre of the Earth!
AXEL: And when were leaving?
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Tomorrow, crack of dawn!
AXEL: Tomorrow?!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Tomorrow!
(Axel lein)
POVESTITORUL: There were still few hours left! Everything was ready. We carried with
us: a centigrade thermometer up to 150 degrees, a manometer, a chronometer,
two compasses, a night-glass, two Ruhmkorff lamps, two rifles and two
revolvers, two ice-picks, two pickaxes, a ladder made of silk, three hundred

metres long, one axe, one hammer, a dozen iron wedges and pitons, several
long knotted ropes, three alpenstocks, boots and the provisions: six months
supply of dried meat and biscuits, juniper, too! Also, we had a portable medical
kit containing: blunt-bladed scissors, splints for fractures, a strip of holland
material, bandages and compresses, surgical spirit, ammonia, iodine and other
medicines! My uncle was careful not to forget a leather belt which contained
an adequate supply of money in gold, silver and paper form.
PROF. LIDENBROCK: With such clothing, shoes and equipment, there is no reason we
shouldnt go far!
AXEL: ... and whatever route fortune gives, we shall follow, Virgiliu!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Well done, Axel!
SCENA 8
( peisaj straniu, parial nzpezit)
POVESTITORUL: We had worked our way round the great Golf Faxa then we could see
the two white peaks of Sneffels! We were working our way round the huge base
of the volcano and soon, we were out in open country, if that term can be used
for a huge waste-ground of discarded volcanic material.
AXEL: Uncle, we are going to climb Sneffels. Fine. Were going to have a look at its
crater. Good. Others have done it and lived to tell the tale! We are going to ferret
among the bowels of the Earth but what proves that an eruption is not in
preparation?
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Sneffels has been silent for six hundred years!
AXEL: It might speak again one day!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: I have therefore questioned the local inhabitants and Hans; I have
surveyed the ground and I can assure you, Axel, that there will not be an
eruption very soon!
AXEL: Really?
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Listen carefully! When an eruption is on the way, the steam
increases considerably but then disappears completely. Certainly, we have
nothing to fear from the fury of the volcano before long!
POVESTITORUL: We began to move up the slopes of Sneffels. The route was becoming
more and more difficult. The ground was climbing and soon, a keen frost and a
strong wind surrounded us.
(Vntul bate puternic, pietre minuscule se prvlesc peste cei 3)
POVESTITORUL: Finally, at eleven at night, very much in darkness, we reached the
summit of Snefells. Before going to shelter inside the crater, I caught sight the
pale glimpse of the North Star for the last time!

SCENA 9

POVESTITORUL: In the morning we woke up half-frozen by a glacial temperature but in
the rays of a fine sun. All around I saw valleys, ravines and countless glaciers.
PROF. LIDENBROCK: We are at the summit of Sneffels, with its twin peaks. Hans, tell us
what the Icelanders call the one bearing us this instant?
HANS: Scartaris!
AXEL: Scartaris?
PROF. LIDENBROCK: To the crater!
AXEL: Uncle, to climb down into a blunderbuss when it may be loaded and could go off
at the least shock, youve got to be crazy!

PROF. LIDENBROCK: Can you have any doubt now?
AXEL: I am crushed by the evidence!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: We have only to keep waiting for the calends of July!
POVESTITORUL: The following days, a grey sky, cloudy and heavy, lowered over the
summit of the cone! Without the sun really was like sinking while coming into
harbour! On the twenty-sixth still nothing; rain mixed with snow fell down.
The sky was still covered the following day. But on the twenty-eight of June,
a miracle! The sun poured its abundant rays down into the crater! At the
middle of the day, it came and gently kissed the edge of the middle chimney!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: It is there! There it is! Forward... to the centre of the globe!

AXEL: Where?
PROF. LIDENBROCK: At the bottom of the vertical chimney!
AXEL: And there is no way out!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Yes, there is! I can just see a sort of corridor at an angle towards
the right. We will have a look tomorrow. Lets eat and then, we can sleep.

At eight in the morning, a ray of daylight came and woke us up scattering
everywhere like a shower of sparks.
AXEL: Its magnificent! It is as if the spirits of the underground are lighting up their
palace to welcome their guests from the Earth!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Have a look at the thermometer!
AXEL: Fifteen degrees! In other words, an increase of only nine degrees! We know that
the temperature increases by one degree for a depth of fourty metres; so, we are at
three hundred and sixty metres deep!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Wrong! We are three thousand metres below sea level!
AXEL: Are we really?
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Yes or else figures are no longer figures!

was very gentle. We walked all day long and, surprisingly, the tunnel began to
climb half of the second day!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Well, Axel?
AXEL: Well, Im totally exhausted!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: What, after strolling along such an easy route?!
AXEL: Easy, perhaps, but most certainly tiring!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: But all we have to do is descend!
AXEL: Climb, with respect! Definitely!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: It might be the wrong way, but we won't confirm the error until
we reach the end of the gallery!
AXEL: Youre right to follow such a course of action, uncle! I would support it if we
werent in a greater danger!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Of what?
AXEL: Of the shortage of water!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Well, we will ration it, Axel!
340 350
POVESTITORUL: Rationing was indeed necessary! The route was climbing, sometimes it
even seemed to be going down... Magnificent marble specimens covered the
walls. At six p.m, a wall appeared right in front of us. We had reached the end
of a cul-de-sac (a dead end)!
350
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Well so much the better! At least we know we are not on
Saknussemms route. We have three days to get back to the point where the
two tunnels split!
AXEL: Yes, if we are strong enough!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: And why should we not be?
AXEL: Because tomorrow there will be no water left at all!
360
POVESTITORUL: The following day we left very early. Finally, on the seventh of July,
dragging ourselves along on our hands and knees, half-dead, we reached the
point where the two tunnels split! I lay there, a lifeless mass, stretched out on
the lava floor; I fell into a deep faint!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Poor child! Look, the last drops of water! Drink!
AXEL: Thank you, uncle! We have to turn round and follow the path back to Snefells!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Go back?
AXEL: Yes, go back, without wasting a moment!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: No, Axel, no! Go if you want! Hans will go with you! Leave me
alone!
AXEL: Abandon you?
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Hear me out, Axel! While you were lying there without moving, I
explored the other gallery. It forces its way directly into the bowels of the
Earth. We should meet abundant springs! I am asking for only one more day!
If at the end of that time I have not encountered the water we need, I swear to
you that we will return to the surface of the Earth!
AXEL: All right! Let it be as you wish aand may God reward your superhuman energy!
Let us go! You have only a few hours left in which to tempt fate!

PROF. LIDENBROCK: Why bother? I do not imagine this source will ever dry up! And
the water flow will follow us all the time...

twisting and turning in sinuous paths, produced unexpected corners, taking on
complexity of a maze. On July eighteen, we arrived at a sort of grotto, of
considerable size.
AXEL: Uncle where are we now?
PROF. LIDENBROCK: By my calculations we are somewhere under the open sea!
AXEL: So, the ocean stretches above our heads!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: We have covered about 425 miles and we are 80 kilometers deep!
AXEL: Allow me to do only a simple calculation!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Go on, my boy, feel free!
AXEL: The radius of the Earth is about 6 000 km!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: As you say!
AXEL: And we achieved sixty km in about twenty days?
PROF. LIDENBROCK: In twenty days!
AXEL: If we continue in this way, we will therefore take five years to get down!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Where Arne Saknussemm succeeded, we will also succeed! Now,
consult the manometer; what does it indicate?
AXEL: A considerable pressure!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Good! You can see that by going down gradually, by slowly getting
used the density of the atmosphere, we have not had any problems at all!
AXEL: None at all, apart from a few earaches!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Theoretically the objects no longer have any weight at the centre
of the globe!

POVESTITORUL: For the two weeks that followed our last conversation, I can only find
in my memory a single event of an extreme seriousness. On August seven, our
successive descents had brought us to a depth of ninety km examining the
granite strata; suddenly, turning round, I noticed that I was alone.

POVESTITORUL: I started fleeing, rushing at random through the dark, going down,
calling, shouting, screaming, soon bruised on the rock projections, falling and
getting up! After several hours I fell like an inert mass along the wall of gallery
and I lost all awareness of existence. How long this state of unconsciousness
had lasted, I cannot say. A loud noise like long rolling thunder struck my ear!
AXEL: Uncleee! Its a hallucination? Help! It seems to hear voices! Its an acoustic effect!

PROF. LIDENBROCK: And the stream?

PROF. LIDENBROCK: Axel, do not despair! It is already something to be able to hear

AXEL: Yes, uncle!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: First of all we must find out how apart we are! I pronounce your
name and start the chronometer! You immediately answer and I'll stop it. All right?

PROF. LIDENBROCK: Axeeeel!

PROF. LIDENBROCK: Do you feel strong enough for a little walk?

PROF. LIDENBROCK: Without a doubt! Look at the bones scattered on the ground!
AXEL: Yes, the bones of prehistoric animals! And this, what can it be?
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Here is the lower jawbone of a mastodont!
AXEL: But if prehistoric animals lived in the subterranean regions, who is to say that one
of those monsters is not still wandering around in the middle of these dark forests?
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Nobody, my boy... nobody! Just as no one can tell us how long
would this ocean be!
AXEL: Would we ever be able to sight the shores on the other side?
PROF. LIDENBROCK: We have no time to lose and will set sail tomorrow! Were going to
embark on a good solid raft!
AXEL: A raft?!

was ready.
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Hit the road, run before the wind!
POVESTITORUL: At midday, Hans ties a hook to the end of a line and he baits it with a
small piece of meat and cast into the sea.

AXEL: You seem impatient, uncle!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: With a good reason!
AXEL: And yet we are advancing at a rate...
PROF. LIDENBROCK: It is not our speed that is too small, but the sea that is too big!
AXEL: But since we have been following the route indicated by Saknussemm...
PROF. LIDENBROCK: That is the question! Have we been following the route? Did
Saknussemm ever encounter this stretch of water? Did he cross it?
AXEL: In any case, we cant regret coming this far. The spectacle is magnificent and...

PROF. LIDENBROCK: Axel... prepare the weapons!
AXEL: But its a colossal porpoise!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: Yes and over there is a sea lizzard of a most unusual size!
AXEL: And further on a prodigious crocodile! Look at its huge jaws!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: We are surrounded by monsters!
AXEL: Look! They make a rush at each other!
PROF. LIDENBROCK: These animals attack one another with indescribable fury!

out a veritable maelstrom in the open sea. Several minutes go by... the
