2. Encourage the use of graphic organizers to help students link and summarize key points. Graphic organizers (charts, diagrams, etc.) are particularly
useful for Spanish-language students. Such graphics help them grasp ideas visually
and synthesize learning. When students complete or prepare graphic organizers
themselves, they are actually analyzing key concepts. Such tasks help them practice key vocabulary and formulate ideas in their own words, without the necessity
of writing complete sentences.

3. Have students situate the locale of events. Maps are an integral feature of
World History: Patterns of Interaction, and the ability to situate the location where
events took place is an essential skill for historical understanding. As students read,
direct their attention to the maps in the textbook and suggest that they study them
to pinpoint where key events occurred. Modeling this strategy for students will
help them appreciate the value of the visual dimension in the learning processa
particularly important modality for English learners.
