Chapter 2
Learning objectives of this chapter are to:

Write the governing equation(GE) of a given SDoF system

Determine the response of the system

Analyze the response of the system

Governing Equation
For writing GE:

Select a suitable coordinate to describe the position of the mass

Determine the static equilibrium position of the system and measure the
displacement of the mass from its static equilibrium position

Draw free-body diagram of the mass to indicate all the forces acting on the
mass

Apply Newtons second law of motion (or other methods) on the mass to
obtain GE of the system

Newtons second law on spring mass system

Spring mass system is the simplest example of a undamped system

GE by energy conservation method

Only applicable to undamped systems!

GE by DAlemberts Principle

DAlemberts Method states that virtual work done by all real and fictitious forces
is zero
In a simple spring-mass system, spring force is real force and inertia force is
fictitious force

When the total virtual work done by all the forces is set equal to zero, we obtain

Solution of GE

Equation of motion for a spring mass system is given as:

The equation is constant coefficient second order ODE

Characteristic equation for GE is given as:

Roots of the equation are:

Solution associated with complex conjugate roots is given as:
