Pope: End hostility—protect

kids, planet
By Roy Lagarde
ON New Year’s Day, Pope Benedict XVI has called for a change
in personal lifestyles to save the planet as he celebrated a Mass in
Vatican to mark the start of 2010.
In his traditional New Year’s Day address, Benedict XVI also called for peace and
the protection of children.
Jan. 1 is the Roman Catholic Church’s World Day of Peace, and the Pope appealed to
armed groups to “stop, reflect and abandon the way of violence”.
“Respect others, regardless of their skin color, nationality, language, religion,” said
the leader of the world’s 1.1 billion Catholics.
The Pontiff added that the value of respect for all should be taught from an early age.

Ecological duty
According to the Pontiff, the people need to change how they live their lives and
called for “ecological responsibility” to be taught in schools.

Pope sees reasons for hope

in New Year VATICAN CITY, Jan. 4, 2010—Pope Benedict XVI delivered a stirring message from the window of
his apartment in the Vatican Palace above a packed St. Peter’s Square on Sunday. Before reciting the
Angelus, he welcomed the New Year with an invitation to hope and a reminder that the faithful have
a responsibility to collaborate with God.
The Pope began by saying that despite problems in the Church, the world and our family lives, we
can always trust in God to be our hope, a hope that does not rely on “improbable prognostications” or
“economic forecasts.” This is also not a hope in a “generic religiosity, or in a fatalism feigned as faith.”
“We trust in the God that revealed completely and definitively in Jesus Christ His will to be with man,
to share his story, to guide us all to His kingdom of love and life,” continued the Holy Father.
The Pontiff referred to the three biblical readings from Sunday’s Eucharistic liturgy as being “of extraor-
dinary wealth” in illuminating this revelation. “These texts,” he explained, “affirm that God is not only
creator of the universe—an aspect also in common to other religions—but that He is the Father….”
Through these readings, Benedict XVI said, we know that God chose us as His adopted children,
first among creation, and even made himself man to live among us, thus, making “all of the fullness
of divinity” bodily present.
The true reason for us to have hope, continued the Pope, is “the meaning given to history because it
is ‘inhabited’ by the Wisdom of God.”
However, he noted, this “divine design” does not come about on its own, but is a “project of love,”
which generates and asks for freedom.

“Each man and woman is responsible for taking Him in to their own lives, day by day.”
Thus, said the Pope, the value of the year 2010 for us is contingent on our ability to “collaborate with
the grace of God,” according to our individual responsibilities.
The Pontiff concluded by using the example of the Virgin Mary as a spiritual model, because when
she gave her consent the Son of God was conceived.
“Each time the Lord wants to take a step ahead, together with us, towards the ‘promised land,’ he
calls first to our hearts, (and) waits for … our ‘yes’, in the big and the small choices.”
After the Angelus, the Benedict XVI greeted all the English-speakers in the crowd, calling them to be “wit-
nesses to the light that enlightens the whole of creation” like John the Baptist in Sunday’s Gospel. (CNA)

Education fundamental to
environmental protection and
peace, says Holy Father
VATICAN, Jan. 1, 2010—Pope Benedict XVI celebrated the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God in Mass
on January 1, a day which also marks the 43rd World Day for Peace. In his homily, the Pontiff made an
appeal for investment in education based on respect for the human being and, in turn, for the protec-
tion of the environment and peace in the world.
The Pope’s message for the World Day for Peace 2010, "If you want to cultivate peace, protect creation,"
was presented in his homily on Friday at St. Peter’s Basilica. The Pope pointed to the revelation of the
"Face of God" throughout Scripture and its manifestation in the birth of Christ as a point of meditation
for bringing peace to the world.
The Pontiff said that we can see the reflection of the vision of God on the world today through the
faces of innocent children, who make "a silent appeal to our responsibility." In light of their "defense-
lessness," said Benedict XVI, all justifications for war and violence cease to be valid. "We should simply
convert ourselves to projects of peace, put down weapons of all types and work together to build a
world worthy of man," exhorted the Pope.
Benedict XVI underscored that the "privileged way" which leads to peace is our ability to recognize
in each other, "a brother in humanity," regardless of skin color, religion or origin.
"From the time we are young, it’s important to be educated to respect others, even when they are
different from us," the Holy Father continued.

The Pontiff also called for renewed respect for "human ecology," due to the close relationship between
respect for man and the preservation of creation. "If man is degraded, the environment in which he
lives is also degraded," he stated.
The Pope concluded by appealing for an investment in an education not only based on technical or scien-
tific notions, but one focused on the "respect for man and his rights and fundamental responsibilities."
Only in this way, he said, that commitment to the environment can truly be a tool for the construc-
tion of peace.
Among the many clergy concelebrating Mass with the Pope were Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal
Tarcisio Bertone, and the President emeritus of the Pontifical Council of Justice and Peace, Cardinal
Renato Raffaele Martino. (CNA)

Peace and the environment

THE old Latin saw, Si viz pacem para bellum (if you want peace
prepare for war) that is historically attributed to the Roman military
writer Publius Flavius Vegetius Renatus, has inspired political
leaders from the third century until lately when stockpiling nuclear
arsenal was meant to deter, or so it seemed, global strife.
With no reference to Leo Tolstoy’s novel that surrounds Napoleon’s
invasion of Russia, the relationship of war and peace has bred
numerous principles in the art of war—or the art of peace, if you
may. But to include environment to the equation would be, at
first blush, startling. For, what business does environment have
in establishing peace?
But this was exactly the message of Pope Benedict XVI during the
43rd World Day of Peace that was celebrated on January 1—“If you
want to cultivate peace, protect creation.” This is new and this is
radical, although the Pope traces back the idea to John Paul II’s earlier
messages on world peace and even to Leo XIII’s Rerum Novarum.
The Pontiff’s logic is premised on the perspective that the protection
of creation and peacemaking are profoundly linked. He establishes
the strong bond that exists between caring for the environment and
cultivating a cosmic vision of peace by developing a theology of
creation, human development and intergenerational solidarity, among
others. He says: “The quest for peace by people of goodwill surely
would become easier if all acknowledge the indivisible relationship
between God, human beings and the whole of creation.”
He warns that unless the human family responds to the need to
protect creation with a “renewed sense of social justice and equity,

and of international solidarity, we run the risk of sowing seeds
of violence among peoples, and between current generations and
those to come.”
In 1988, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines
(CBCP) in its landmark statement on the environment titled What
is Happening to our Beautiful Land, has already warned of political
and social unrest if the environment is neglected. “We are well
aware that, for the vast majority of Filipinos, the scars of nature,
which increasingly we see all around us, mean less nutritious food, Abp. Antonio J. Ledesma, SJ, DD
poorer health and uncertain future. This will inevitably lead to an
increase in political and social unrest.” Ministries for Peace in

Time, or perhaps more precisely, Sunday of the second week
of Ordinary Time. This latter formulation allows us to see more
clearly why there is no first Sunday of Ordinary Time in the
missal, a fact which might have induced some, including a
widely diffused missal for the faithful, to state that the Baptism
of the Lord was in fact the first Sunday.
That this is not the case is also shown from the fact that the
feast is sometimes celebrated on a Monday that is Jan. 9. This
happens only in those countries that transfer the Epiphany to
the Sunday between Jan. 2 and 8. When Christmas Day falls
on a Sunday, Epiphany falls on Jan. 8, and so the Christmas
season ends the following day.
It is further confirmed by the rubrics of the Liturgy of the
Hours. After the concluding prayer of this feast’s vespers, a
rubric laconically proclaims: “The end of Christmastide.”

kaisipan at nasa wastong gulang. Nararapat lamang ang
pelikula sa mga manonood na may edad 18 pataas.
