Safety Considerations:
Students have to be aware of their surroundings, as
there will be students swinging racquets, making
contact with shuttles, and other student movement.
We will also have to be aware of other WVU students
playing basketball and/or using the courts beside us.

NASPE 3
Today we will be learning the overhead clear. I will demonstrate this for you. In the
overhead clear, you want to bring the racquet back like you are scratching your
head, contact the shuttle at 11:00, snap your wrist and follow through. The
overhead drive is a defensive shot to bring your opponent to the back of the court.
Can someone please tell me one aspect of the overhead clear I just mentioned?
Good. I will demonstrate the overhead clear one more time, and then we will get
started.
Critical Elements of Overhead Clear:
- Drop elbow while bringing racket back behind head.
- Weight shifts from dominant (back) foot to non-dominant foot
- Contact shuttle at 11:00
- Snap wrist and follow through across body.

Contingency Plan:
If we cannot use the courts in the rec center, we will
try to hold class in the shell building. If the students
are more than 10 minutes late, they will be marked
absent.
(What if you have to go outside? What if you do not
have the gymnasium? What if the students are late?
What if you have a double class?)
Technology Integration:
None
Reflection:
Today the students had three different activities based off of the overhead drive. In the first activity, there was
a server who would serve it to 2-3 people on the other side of the net. The 2-3 people would return the serve
with an overhead clear. The second activity was a 2v2 rally with the "serve, drive, overhead clear" sequence.
The third activity was X's and I's which is 2v2 where the "X's" return with an overhead clear diagonally across
the court and the I's returned an overhead clear straight across the court. In all these activities, I would
frequently change the focus of the activity. For example, I would say I want you to focus on bringing your
racquet all the way to the back of your net and then in a few minutes I would say Now I want you to focus
on having your shuttle land in the back alley. The app task was either 2v2, 2v1, or 1v1 with an overhead
clear landing in bounds was worth 1 point and an overhead clear landing in bounds and in the back alley
was worth 2 points.
I thought the students did well in the first activity. They were returning with an overhead clear almost every
time. Some students struggled when the serve was not high enough for a proper overhead clear. In the
second activity, the students were rallying nicely but were not following the sequence that often. The
students were doing a nice job of identifying the doubles court dimensions during this activity. In the third
activity, the students also did a good job keeping a rally but lost the purpose of the Xs & Is. I think the app
task went well as well besides the odd pairing. I think having the back alley worth 2 points was a great idea
because it emphasized the purpose of the defensive shots.
In the first activity, I should have had the students practice tossing it to themselves or having someone toss it
to them first. A lot of my students were struggling with bringing their racquet all the way back behind their
head. This would have helped practiced that critical element before having to worry about the net and
someone serving it to you from a farther distance. I could have had some people that were having trouble
serving to the other side move closer to the net so it would have been a better opportunity for an overhead
clear. In the second activity, although the students were keeping a rally, they were not following the
sequence of serve, drive, overhead clear. I should have started off demonstrating this first, so maybe the
students had a better idea of what I meant. Since the students were playing to 21, I could have made the
point system if you follow the sequence and land in bounds, thats worth 2 points. However, if they didnt
follow the sequence but still scored on an overhead clear, it would have been worth 1 point. In the last
activity, I could have done the same modification as the second activity, where following the directions would
earn you another point. I could have also placed some individual extensions in this activity. For example,
Emily did really well with an overhead clear. I could have told her that she could only stay in the back alley.

Skill Development This drill focuses on using the overhead clear in a game-like
situation.
DRILL 2 Doubles Rally
Your team will break into groups of 4
Each person will need a racquet and each group will need one shuttle
Spin the racquet to see which pair gets the shuttle first
The pair who wins the spin, will choose if they want the shuttle first or not
The pair the starts off with the shuttle with serve the shuttle (backhand or
forehand) to the other pair.
That pair will return the shuttle with a drive (backhand or forehand)
The pair that served will then return the shuttle with an overhead clear.
Serve Drive Overhead Clear
You can only score with the overhead clear
Rally scoring, keep in mind what is in bounds, what is not
First pair to 21 wins
Skill Development This skill focuses on using the overhead clear in a rally.

DRILL 3 Xs and Is
Split into doubles
The two closer to the dividing net will start off as the Xs
The Xs can only return the shuttle diagonally
The pair closer to the wall will start off as Is
The Is can only return the shuttle straight across the net
First team to 21 wins
Skill Development This skill focuses on returning the shuttle in different directions.
Application Task 2v2 rally
Students will play doubles but can only score on an overhead clear, first pair to 12 wins.
If the overhead clear lands in bounds = 1 pt
If the overhead clear lands in bounds and in the back alley: 2 pts
