OVERVIEW OF LESSON

Concept: Relay Racing (Physical Education)

participating in moderate to vigorous physical activity.

- Each student will perform one set motion during each portion of the relay race
- Students will give instructive cues to ensure their teammates are performing the correct
movements when it is their turn during the race.
- Students will try to gain distance while they have the lead and those who are behind the leader
will try their best to chase them down to minimize the gap between teams.

Students’ Prior Knowledge Needed for This Lesson: Students should know that they must stay on
a given trac when competing against one another in an organized race.

Data will be collected by analyzing students abilities to follow instructions given out prior to the
beginning of the race. Students will be measured by the completeness of specific movement for each
portion of the relay race.

SEQUENCE OF LESSON

PART 1: Engage/Anticipatory Set/Hook:


-To initiate the lesson the teacher will first have the students watch the SpongeBob
SquarePants episode “The Great Snail Race”.

-After watching the episode, the teacher will ask the students questions that will help students
reflect on SpongeBob’s poor teaching/coaching techniques

-Once the reflection is complete, the teacher will guide the students to a grass field on the
school site and begin the 2nd part of the lesson

PART 2: Lesson Body: (This section might include instruction/modeling, guided practice, and independent
practice. Music lessons often go through mini-versions of this cycle multiple times in each lesson. Consider
pacing in your planning; change modalities and tasks often for optimal engagement.)

Objective 1: Once everyone is on the grass field, the teacher will provide instructions on how the relay
race will be performed by the students:
- There will be 6 different lanes where the students will line up, in groups of 4, with 2 cones
separated by 20 yards. Each group will be spaced out by 5 feet.
- The teacher will explain that each student in each group will have to race in the following
motions: 1st runner must crabwalk (Crabs), 2nd runner must hop with feet together(Seahorse),
3rd runner must do cartwheel(Starfish), and the last runner will wrap up the race
waddling(Penguins).
- In order for a student to complete their portion of the relay, they must give the baton to their
teammate who is next in line.
- The race will begin once the teacher blows the whistle and the music starts playing
- The race will be considered finished when the first group to have all students complete their
portion of the relay has finished

- At the beginning of every new race the students will switch off starting positions and will be
designated a new motion based on their starting position.
- The portion of the activity will be complete once every student has raced using all 4 motions

PART 3: Closing/Reflection/Evaluate:

-Once the activity is completed and all the students are sitting on the field, the teacher will ask
their students questions about the activity such as:
“What motion did you think was the fastest?”, “what motion did you struggle the most with?”,
“does the movement of these different animals change any thought you already had about the
diversity within the ocean and how much more difficult it could be for different species to get
around?”
● Assessment/Exit Ticket: Students must discuss with one another and share how they believe
the 4 different motions used within the activity could be sped up.
