Cognitive: SWBAT show knowledge of critical elements of a volleyball serve under and
overhand. Students will be able to answer check for understanding questions during
activities and closure.
Affective: SWBAT work together as partners 80% of the time during partner activities.
H-R Fitness: Students will be active 80% of the class time by demonstrating active
movement of setting ball to self, wall, or partner, and during warm-up activities.

Safety Considerations:
Boundaries, make sure area is clear, personal
space, use set emergency procedures of the
school in case of an emergency, listen for stop
and start cues, do not hit volleyballs up to the
ceiling, be aware of surroundings. When serving
to wall distance away needs to be far enough
away.

Good Morning boys and girls. Its good to see everyone again. Just in case you forgot
my name is Ms. Cottrell. Today we are going to start with our Pilates. We are going to
do the Pilate partner challenge like we did last week. Can everyone find a partner and
lay down beside each other? We are going to challenge our partner to hold the Pilates
and see who can do it longer! I am going to time everyone, if you drop position just
start over. Ok when I say go we will start. Lets hold Superman. Ready Set Go!
Students will challenge partner and the stopwatch will be used to time. After a minute
students will stop.
Okay class you made it to a minute? Did we have anyone tie with each other? Okay
now lets try the challenge again! This time lets do planks! Ready Set Go!
(use same as superman)

What time is it Mr.
Fox?

One student is the lephrucan and stands in the center of the gym. The others are gold
and line up on the end line. Pieces of gold will say what time is it Mr. Lephrucan?
Lephrucan will say the time and the pieces of gold will take that many giant steps
forward. Repeat until the lephrucan thinks they are close enough. He will then say
Midnight. The pieces of gold run back to the starting end line. If lephrucan tags them
with two fingers they become a helper.

What time is it Mr.

Lephracuan

You know how lephrucans love cold Well, the lephruchan is sneaky. They will wait
until midnight to steal the gold. The lephrucan tries to trick the gold into thinking its

Okay class the last two classes we talked about the volleyball bump and set. We use
these during game play. When do we use the bump? What about the set when do we
use it? Can you show me one more time how we hold our hands for a set> Do we use
our finger tips or palms? We use the bump and set during game play but how do you
think we start game play? To put the ball into play we serve the ball. That is what we
are going to learn today. When we serve a volleyball one team has a member serve
the ball over to the other teams side. In Volleyball we have two serves the overhand
serve and underhand serve.

To Underhand serve we need our feet together. Hips and shoulders facing target.
Hold the ball in your non-serving hand out in front of you at the height at your hips.
Bring your serving arm back until its just a little higher than your waist Step forward
with opposite foot and swing serving arm forward. Swing your arm straight forward
like it is a pendulm or granddaddy clock The bigger the swing . Strike the ball with the
heel of your hand. Follow through with at head high, Lets try a couple
times.shadowing without the ball.
Okay when we get a ball we are going to practice underhand serving using the wall.
Students will be 8 feet away from wall. Serve above the blue line Not too high though
you just want it to go over the net. Serve the ball to the wall and try to catch the
rebound. Serve softly to the wall. Continue until you hear the music stop. When music
stops where do you put the ball?
Challenge : How many serves can you hit off the wall and catch in a row?
Serve Step Back extension
Each time you serve and catch the volleyball take a step back. How far back can you
get in 3 minutes?

Everyone find a partner and stand back to back with each other without touching.
Now we are going to practice serving to a partner. We need to try to get our
volleyballs high like we are hitting over a net. The volleyball net would be about the
heighth of where the blue line ends on the wall. We also need to imagine we are
aiming to hit our partners head. We want our partner to be able to catch the ball
without having to run for it. Now when I say go I want the partner that is shorter to go
and get a volleyball then come to the green line at about middle of the court across
from your partner. The taller partner needs to go get a spot on the blue out of bounds
side line. Okay Ready Go!
Challenge0 How many serves can you and your partner make without hitting the
floor?
Challenge Step back every time one your partner catches the ball. Only the person
who served steps back. See how far you can get.
Serve to target extension
We are going to practice accuracy or hitting a target. We are going to set a hoop
between you and your partner. You are going to try to serve the ball so it hits inside
the hoop. Now one partner take one ball back and the other partner find a spot at
midline after you put one ball back grab one hoop. Place the hoop at midline and
partners stand facing each other. Lets practice a few times
Challenge- each time you hit the target score a point. Keep track of your points lets
see how many you can get. Freeze. How many did you get?
Extension- Movving back
Now if both you and your partner hit the target move back one step. Lets see how far
back you can make it.

To serve we stand with your left foot and hip slightly ahead and point your front foot
like this (teacher demonstration) your back foot should be in a comfortable position
pointing a little to the right so you are balanced. Okay can everyone show me how
your feet should be? First we are going to practice overhand serving without the ball.
Lets pretend we are holding the ball in our left hand palm. Your palm should be facing
up. Now pretend there is a ball and place your right hand on top of the ball your right
palm is facing down. Its like a meatball sandwich. Hold your arms out towards the
court. Your elbows should be slightly bent. Now we are going to prepare to strike the
ball. Bring your right elbow straight back until your thumb is lined up with your ear.
Your finger should be a couple inches away from your ear and your forearm should be
parallel to the floor. Okay lets try what we have so far. Hold the ball and draw back.
Now the toss. When we toss the ball we want t lower the hand holding the ball slightly.
As you toss the ball with your left hand, bring your right hand up and back. Step
straight forward with your left foot and as you swing your arm, hips should point to the
net to get a little more power. Strike with the side of your hand. Lets try the
movement. From the beginning. Remember to keep your eye on the ball when we use
it. Now we are going to start practicing. One of the most important things in a
overhand serve is the toss so first we are going to practice the toss. We are going to
toss the ball about feet above your head directly in line with your right arm. If you let
your toss drop, it should land about a foot in front of you on your right side. It is
important that the ball stays just in front of you so you dont have to chase it. After we
go get our volley balls I want you to spread out and practice the toss. Just the toss.
Toss two feet above your head and let it drop it should land a little bit in front of your
right side like this (teacher dmnonstraition) Remember how your feet should be
places. Practice tossing the ball and letting it land in front so that you can do it and
make the ball land in the the same spot. The fun thing in volley ball is if you make a
bad toss, you can just let it drop. It is legal in volleyball to do so, and youll get a
second chance to get it right. But make sure your second toss is good because you
will have to serve this one Right now lets just practice the toss and getting the ball to
land in the same spot. When the music stops everyone freeze and put the ball in
between your feet.
Freeze
Challenge: Can you get the ball to land in the same spot 4 times?
Freeze Now can everyone act like they are tossing the ball and bring your arm back
like you are preparing to strike. Remember fingers need to be close to our ears. Now
we are going to put it all together.. Like last week we are going to use the wall we
need to back up so we have enough room and make sure we have e

Put your balls between your feet. We are going to practice by playing a little game
called ping pong. You are going to stand facing your partner spread out about 5 steps
away. You are going to take turns serving back and forth. Try to serve the ball so your
partner can catch after it bounces once. If you make two catches each of you can
take a step back. Now one partner take one ball back and the other partner find a
spot at midline after you put one ball back stand back to back with your partner
Ok ready go.

Students will put equipment away and get a drink of water. Students will line up on the
end line. Okay class. How do we put the ball into play? What part of our hand do we
use to strike the ball? How are our feet placed when we underhand serve? Overhand
serve? How high should our toss go for overhand serving go?

Contingency Plan:
If we are to go outside use of basketball courts will
be used. If students are late have students run warm
up laps do not do Pilates (possible use of short tag
game) then go into core. If double class using
partners.

Technology Integration:
Music

(Music, Heart Rate Monitors, Pedometers, FLIP video cameras,

digital cameras, etc,)

(What if you have to go outside? What if you do not have the

gymnasium? What if the students are late? What if you have a
double class?)

Reflection:
Last week I said that I was going to do better about explaining why we are doing something and what
we will be using it for. This week I took time to explain that we use a volleyball serve to put the ball
into play. I think explaining why really helped out they knew that using the serve would start the
game. Also, I think along with that I said something like it wouldnt be any fun if no one started the
game right? So we have to serve! they all giggled at it and I think it really helped them understand
oh thats right we do have to start the game so we need to use the serve. At first I thought that we
were going to be doing overhand at first which confused me, but when I arrived Mrs. Gartin said we
would be using underhand serving first which was a relief to me. I think the progression of task went
well. We started with shadowing of an underhand serve then progressed to serving with a partner
and used challenges then moved to the overhand serve. One thing I liked that Mrs. Gartin used was
in the explanation of how to underhand serve we were talking about using the right part of our wrist
because it will make the ball go farther and then she said watch what happens, and she
demonstrated it. The ball went flying and all of the kids were so amused it was really neat to see that
play out and see the kids reaction. The progression we used really went well and it gave me a better
idea of how to set up a volleyball serve lesson. I was able to revise my plan going off of the class a
lot better and add a few things of my own. Another thing that went well was I was able to improve on
giving specific feedback which was another thing I wanted to work on. When we started we had the
partners on opposite end lines. Once they started I noticed that they werent going to be able to
serve that far so I had to modify quickly and move them closer to each other which really helped and
gave children more success. After feedback the areas I want to improve on using the short and
sweet cues. The more meaningful the better. I liked the example of how to make memorable cues
with thowing, you had said pick the apple feed to giant and throw the apple away. It really gave me
that realization of oh I can see that. Using those for kids especially can really get something stuck in
their head to do that skill and I want them to have that vision of what they are doing in their head.
Another thing was to use whole class talk and feedback during the instructions. I can stop class as a
whole and say I like that I am seeing this, or I see a lot of this lets try doing this. With this lesson for
example. I like that I see a lot of follow through but lets try to keep our arms stiff and end pointing to
our target or partner. One thing I am going to differently next lesson is what we went over is having
equipment ready for demonstrations. Especially after seeing how Mrs. Gartin used the equipment to
really capture the students attention and have them really excited to try it. I think I leaned a lot from
doing this lesson. It gave me a much clearer idea of how to progress with volleyball serving.
