LESSON PROGRESSION

Motivation and Introduction:

Good morning Year 7s, today we are going to transition into some slightly more challenging drills and skills; however,
I do feel that you are all capable of achieving these goals. The lesson today we will be looking at your ability to
perform the wrap/or loop, switch and the cut. We will focus on them later on. Also to understand the modification of
touch rugby that we will be playing today. As well beginning to develop some offensive and defensive strategies in a
game like scenario. But first we will start the lesson off by doing the activity 4 corners.

(Individual task structure, differentiation)

(Content & KTP)

(Position of teacher/students, setup/working area/grids for class, transitions)

Warm Up
9:02

4 Corners

- Start out with a

square grid (10x10m)

- 4 students to start in

the centre of the grid

- Students on each

corner will run

towards the next cone
going in a clockwise
direction, who will
receive the ball from
the centre, and then
pass back to the
sender.
The aim of this drill is to
enhance students
understanding of
receiving the ball at
speed as well as timing
of the run.

Allow all students to

have a go at being in
the middle
Dont just let the gun
players stay in the
middle to pass all the
time. Can be used as
a perfect way to
develop the skills of
the student.
Also if student is
injured, can utilise
their presence in the
class by being a
passer (if injury
allows them)

Key Teaching Points

Surge once you

receive the ball
Upside down
hamburger
Step towards target
Lead rotation of
action from the head.

Differentiation:

Change directions
Decrease or increase
the size of the grid

9:12

Bridging organization

Gather into central location

Explain the purpose of the drill (passing into space, timing run etc.)

Explain lateral passing

9:14

- Students start on the

end of the grid (Left
to Right)

- Student 1(left) will

pass the ball down

the line to student 2.

- Keep passing laterally

down the line until

ball is received by
student 5, who will
then surge forward
and pass the ball to
the student opposite
them at the end of the
grid.
The aim of this drill is to
ensure students have
the knowledge and feel
comfortable in passing
the ball across the grid.

It is important for
students to hold their
formation.
This will allow students
to be able to pass the
ball at greater speed, in
end resulting in more
probability in breaking
down the defence.
Key Teaching Points
Stay lateral
Hold your position

HPE2203 Jan 2016

9:20

Bridging organization

Gather into central location

Reinforce the KTPs of the drill

Explain ways that the ball could move faster (i.e. surge and give)

Ask questions on ways it could be improved

Give answers to how the drill can improve

Explain wrap/loop (provide demonstration)

9:22

- Student 1 pass the

ball to student 2

- Student 2 will then

pass the ball to
student 3, wrap
around him and
receive the ball back.
Student 2 will then
pass towards student
4, who passes ball to
student 5.

Walk through the drill

a few times to begin
with. It is a
challenging drill so
make sure that
students are
thoroughly prepared
before expecting
them to do it at 100%
speed.
Hold the position so
that you are prepared
to receive the ball.

- End possession by

passing the ball to

opposite student at
the end of the grid

MODIFICATION >
Student 2 wraps/loops twice

HPE2203 Jan 2016

9:32

9:35

Bridging organization

Gather students into central location

Ask if there is any questions in regards the wrap/loop

Answer the questions

Explain the next drill 7 vs 4.

7(attackers) vs
4(defenders) -

- Attackers start with

the ball at the halfway
line

- They will have 6

attempts to move the

ball up the field

- No turnovers, run

through 6 sets of 6
touches, then rotate
defenders and
attackers

Students will need

assistance in
understanding when
and where to run or
play the ball.
Allow time to stop the
play and reinforce
points, explain
something that could
have helped make the
play better. Or even
stop the play and show
an example of
something that was
done extremely well.
