Q5. How did you attract/address your audience?

The way we made our opening appeal to our target audience was by including
their favourite things that are common in thrillers. We found this out by
completing a Vox Pop. A Vox Pop is popular opinions as represented by informal
comments from member of the public. We used their expectation to advocate in
the conventional success in our own thriller opening.
The car scene is the longest object shown
on screen and I believe that this is actually
quite effective. The use of a low angle
allows the drivers identity to be hidden
and adds mystery and enigma. The car
would also attract the psychographics of
an individual who enjoys the look/types of
cars, mainly young males. Whilst the car is
moving, its more likely that the audience
will wonder who is driving and where are they driving. Once the car has stopped,
it is evident that a female is driving it and then our audience will get a hint of the
narrative due to her blood on her costume and her actions. The pace of the car is
driven quite fast which reiterates the tension of it and even excitement. Also the
sound at the beginning is the same throughout which is catchy and upbeat to
attract ages 16-21.
This shot is of the antagonist who is
denoted twirling her hair several times. I
believe that its the editing techniques
that helps attract our target audience. The
editing technique used is slow motion we
repeated this shot more than twice to
reinstate the continuity. The repetitiveness
makes the viewers enjoy it more and
keeps them more entertained because it
was unpredictable. Due to her being a female it challenges the audience to think
that she cant do the unthinkable. The blood stains on her neck look harsh and
bring to mind her unexpected capability which would attract our target audience
even further. We ensured that the composition included the graphic blood on this
characters clothing, to reinstate her role. The depth of field allowed the character
to be in full focus and in perfect view.

The shot of the main character
(antagonist) in the shower would also be a
scene that would attract our target
audience as it illustrates a lot blood in the
shower. The blood was evidently used to
create a title. The diegetic sound that is
playing on in the back is of the shower
running. This would make the soundtrack
less tedious because of this diegetic sound. The shower running sound
emphasises that shes in the shower to wash away the blood. This would entertain
the psychographics of youngsters as they are more intrigues by this element. The
blood also symbolises our sub genre which would also add to the fact that only
individuals who enjoy watching crime and mystery related TV would watch our
thriller opening.

This shot of the radio would attract our

target market because they would know
that the radio foreshadows upcoming
events. The radio is there to intentionally
to propose breaking news on what the
antagonist has previously done. Our target
market would be able to realise that the
radio is there for a reason and can make
the link between the radio and whats
going to occur. The fact that a radio is used and not a TV suggest that the
protagonist is different from others and is not considered as mainstream. This
could also potentially attract our viewers. We used Grace Pengelly mum to record
a stereotypical breaking news announcement to add realism and impact on the
audience. The radio presenter eventually quietens down (diminuendo) as the
protagonist appears at the door.
This shot is of the antagonist, her identity
is shown just a little so the viewers can get
a hint of her character. This is in the middle
part of the thriller opening and for most of
the time before this part her identity was
hidden very well. This would attract the
audience because they get to see her
slightly and can therefore start to build an
ideology of her and make certain judgments on her character. The mise en scene
shows that she is currently in the kitchen and this highlights the fact that she is
deemed as ordinary because she has the same qualitys as many others, this is
therefore juxtaposing her profession and her capability of murdering another.
As a group we believed that we fulfilled our audiences' expectations even though
we didnt incorporate some of the traditional conventions of a thriller. For example
lighting, we used high-key lighting which contrasts with the viewers ideology of
thriller. We ensured that the lighting was anti-stereotypical so that the narrative is
maintained as unpredictable. The research we conducted had helped us refine
what our target audience did and didnt like. We found out the jump scares, built
tension and plot twists were expected and also theyre favourites. Therefore

we chose to add these features in to give out audience what they wanted. Also
our Vox Pop helped us reached decision on the soundtrack because many people
said they liked the sound of suspenseful soundtracks.

Our viewers responded to our opening the way wed expect, we were happy with
the reaction received. We engaged our audience attention on what we wanted
and wanted them to focus on. We believed that adding the short clip of me (the
protagonist that was hurt badly) created a shock factor and the audience found
this part quite disturbing and shocking. When watching our audience watch it we
found that they enjoyed the soundtrack and would either imitate the sound or nod
their head. This showed us clearly that they were very fond of the soundtrack and
didnt find it tiresome and monotonous.
Our structure was carried out in such a way that it juxtaposed the expectations of
our viewers. We integrated a plot twist which was when the injured character (the
Protagonist) arrives at the door. It was noticeable that this was unexpected due to
the reactions and opinions from our target market. This was done to create a
climatic experience for our viewers. The impact of our final shots exaggerated and
clarified our genre.
