Citizens for Local Democracy (C4LD) was a non-partisan, citizen action group that
emerged in December 1996 to oppose provincially-imposed municipal amalgamation of
seven Toronto-area municipalities. C4LD was also involved in a wide range of other
issues, notably provincial initiatives to radically restructure the education and health
systems of Ontario. At C4LD's peak, between February and April 1997, 1,500 to 2,000
people met weekly in downtown churches; several hundred subscribed to listservs; and

thousands of visits were made weekly to the group's Web Site. C4LD was instrumental
in pushing for and winning six local referenda on the megacity (on March 3, 1997, 76%
voted against amalgamation), as well as pushing for public hearings on Bill 103 where
dozens of individual citizens, as well as local politicians and representatives of various
organizations, spoke against amalgamation. Ultimately, however, C4LD failed to stop
amalgamation, which went into effect on January 1, 1998.

CAVEAT was incorporated as a not-for-profit charitable organization in June, 1992 and

received its charitable designation in October, 1992. The organization is governed by a
volunteer board, of which Priscilla de Villiers is President. Professional staff and
numerous volunteers manage the company and coordinate its various programs.

Goodwill Industries, a non-profit social enterprise, provides work opportunities, skills

development and employee and family strengthening for those who face barriers such as
disability or social disadvantage; with the aim of advancing individuals, families and
communities toward self-sufficiency and prosperity

Street Kids International (or Street Kids) is a Canadian-based non-governmental

organization founded by Peter Dalglish and Frank O'Dea

in 1988.

The organization focuses on providing street youth with the opportunity to lead safer and better
lives through three main programme avenues: street heath, street work and street rights.
In2008, Street Kids International expanded its operations to the United Kingdom with Street

PEN International is the world's leading association of writers, working to promote literature and

political opinion. Today PEN International connects an international community of writers from
