Productspecific terms and abbreviations

The following productspecific abbreviations are used in this
manual:
Term/abbreviation

Meaning

0signal

Input or output supplies 0 V

1signal

Input or output supplies 24 V

Amplification

See sensor amplification

Aperture

Opening through which light passes through the lens onto the image
converter surface. The larger the opening or the aperture is, the more light
will reach the sensor. When the aperture opens, the depth of focus will be
reduced. The depth of focus increases the further the aperture is closed
(larger fnumber). Small aperture openings make longer exposure times
necessary. Shorter exposure times require larger aperture openings.

Auto MDIX

Recognizes the configuration of the other station and adapts the send and
receive cables of a network connection automatically.

CMOS sensor

Optoelectronic sensor which converts light signals into electric signals. In

addition to the purely sensor function, functions for image conversion are
integrated into the chip, e.g. lighting check and contrast correction.

Depth of field

See depth of focus

Depth of focus

The spatial area in front of and behind the focussed object which is still
sharp (also known as depth of field). The depth of field depends on the focal
depth of the lens and the set aperture. Short focal depths with small
aperture openings lead to larger depth of field.

Ethernet

Physical protocol and network for connecting various devices

Exposure time

The time during which the CMOS sensor is subjected to light during
recording. The longer the exposure time, the more light will penetrate.
The choice of exposure time depends e.g. on the movement speed, the
light available and the light sensitivity of the sensor (see also sensor
amplification). With moving objects excessive exposure times result in
blurred images.

FCT

Festo Configuration Tool is the software package for configuring and

commissioning varius components and devices from Festo.

Contents and general instructions

Term/abbreviation

Meaning

Focal depth

Long focal depths create a large image, short focal depths create a
wideangle image. Lenses with variable focal depths are known as zoom
lenses. Lenses with longer focal depths usually have less depth of focus and
less light intensity.

Digital input

Digital output

PLC/IPC

Programmable logic controller/industrial PC

PlugIn

Additional module which extends the functionality of a program. PlugIns for

the FCT software package extend the functionality of the FCT with regard to
the use of special devices.

Sensor amplification

Influences the light sensitivity of the sensor. If the amplification is in

creased, the light sensitivity will also be increased. Excessive amplification
can lead to grained images.

TCP/IP

Combination of the protocols TCP and IP, the mostwidely used protocol in
communication via Ethernet.

1. System summary

1.2.1

Method of operation
The Compact Vision System type SBO..MR1B possesses a
monochrome CMOS sensor. The camera images are pro
cessed in 256 grey tones. The available processing functions
are integrated in the operating system (firmware) of the de
vice. Even movement sequences at high speed can therefore
also be registered and analysed with a high degree of accu
racy.

Resolution

The Compact Vision System offers a max. resolution of

640x480 pixels and a frame rate of max. 2000 pictures per
second.

Resolution

Frame rate (max.) 1)

640 (H) x 480 (V) pixels

185 pictures per second

640 (H) x 240 (V) pixels

369 pictures per second

640 (H) x 120 (V) pixels

732 pictures per second

640 (H) x 64 (V) pixels

1354 pictures per second

1)

You can set the frame rate infinitely variably with the FCT and the
PlugIn SBO..M network". The values for the number of columns
and the number of lines must be divisble by 8. The resolution is
adapted here automatically. High frame rates reduce the expo
sure time of the sensor and therefore require more light.

Tab.1/3:

Resolution and frame rate

Communication

By means of the Ethernet interface, the Compact Vision

System can communicate via the network with the PC or
with other Compact Vision Systems.

Commissioning

The Festo Configuration Tool (FCT) in conjunction with the

42 mm.

Please note
Note that with most lenses the lens length changes when
the focus is reset. The setting infinite" usually leads to
the shortest lens dimension.

Operation without
protective tubing

If you do not wish to use the protective tubing, you can use
lenses of the CSmount standard.
If you use Cmount lenses without protective tubing, you
must screw in a 5 mm spacer ring in place of the protective
tubing, in order to guarantee correct dimensions (accessories
see A.2).

1. System summary

Ascertaining the
suitable focal depth

The somewhat more expensive lenses with adjustable

aperture angle (zoom) enable you to adapt the field of vision
to your requirements. Lenses with fixed focal depth are
cheaper. Whether a lens is suitable depends on:

the smallest possible distance which can still be

represented sharply (Minimum Object Distance MOD)

the focal depth

the light intensity

the permitted distortion.

The object distance, i.e. the distance between the camera and
the object to be photographed can be calculated according to
optic laws. Please note that the following calculation formula
describes the distance between the socalled main level and
the object to be represented. With a thin lens the main level is
the centre of the lens. With a lens the position of the main
level cannot be ascertained so easily. As an estimate you can
assume the centre of the lens to be the main level.

3.1.1

Selecting the power unit

Warning
In order to provide the electric power supply, use only
PELV circuits as per IEC/DIN EN 602041 (Protective
ExtraLow Voltage, PELV).
Take into account also the general requirements for
PELV circuits as per IEC/DIN EN 602041.
Use only power packs which guarantee reliable electri

cal isolation of the operating voltage as per IEC/DIN

EN602041.
By the use of PELV power units, protection against electric
shock (protection against direct and indirect contact) is
guaranteed in accordance with IEC/DIN EN 602041
(electrical equipment of machines, general requirements).
Recommendation: Use a separate closedloop power unit
which does not have to supply any other devices. You will
then achieve the greatest possible resistance to interference.
Simple 24 V transformers with rectifier and Siebelko"
achieve output voltages of 28 V and more with low loads.
Correct operation can only be guaranteed if the permitted
operating voltage range is not exceeded (see Technical
Specifications in appendix A.4).

Connecting the Ethernet interface

Please note
Unauthorized access to your Compact Vision Systems can
cause damage or malfunctioning.
Ask your system administrator how you should protect

your camera network against unauthorized access, e.g.

with a firewall.

Please note
With an active connection to the cameras in the camera
network, live images from all cameras will be transmitted
permanently to the PlugIn SBO..M network". In this way
the network between the PC and the cameras will accord
ingly be heavily loaded. A direct connection is therefore to
be preferred.
If in doubt, ask your network administrator whether

appropriate band widths are available for you or what an

optimum network structure for you should look like.
Observe the necessary system requirements.

4.2

Addressing in the Ethernet (basics)

Due to the separation into logical and physical protocol layers
(Ethernet and TCP/IP), there exist two types of addresses in a
network:

a fixed Ethernet address (MACID) for each device and

an IP address which is assigned to every device in the

network.

Before the application, data are always sent to or received

from an IP address. In order that the data reach the receiver,
a correlation must be created between the logical IP address
and the physical Ethernet address. The Address Resolution
Protocol ARP is used for this purpose: An ARP table is saved
in each network PC. This table lists the relevant physical
Ethernet address for each IP address in the network. If an
Ethernet address is not listed in the ARP table, the IP driver
can ascertain it with the aid of an ARP request.
Ethernet address
(MACID)

The unalterable worldwide clear Ethernet address (MACID)

of the Compact Vision System can be found on the type
plate. In this way you can clearly distinguish the different
Compact Vision Systems.

IP address

An IP address as per standard IPv4 is usually specified with

4 decimal numbers separated by points (per 1 byte).
Example of an IP address: 192.168.2.10
With an IP address, a network as well as an individual station
in the network can be addressed. The IP address therefore
contains:

Festo P.BESBOMEN en 0511NH

the network ID (specifies the address of a network) and

the host ID (specifies the address of an individual station

in this network).

45

4. Commissioning

Network mask

Which numbers in an IP address now represent the network

ID and the host ID are defined by the specification of a
socalled network mask".
The telephone number of Festo Germany can be used as an
example to explain the IP address and the network mask:
00497113470
Which of these numbers represents the dialling code and
which represents the subscriber number becomes clear when
you also know: that the first 7 figures represent the dialling
code, the last 4 represent the subscriber number". That is the
network mask" for the telephone number above.

Network classes

The network mask for IP addresses defines with 0" as a

position marker, the bytes which are used for addressing the
station (host ID). Networks belong to different network
classes depending on the number of these bytes:

Network
class

Network
mask

Explanation

255.0.0.0

Large network

255.255.0.0

Medium network

255.255.255.0

Small network
with max. 254 stations

Tab.4/1:

Gateway

46

The most important network classes with the

appropriate network masks (example)

Networks with different NetworkIDs are connected to each

other via a router or gateway. If a station in a network is to
send data to stations in other networks, the IP address of
the gateway must be specified.

Festo P.BESBOMEN en 0511NH

4. Commissioning

Three entries are therefore required for addressing in the

Internet Protocol IP:

the IP address

the IP network mask

the IP address of the gateway.

Please note

You can undertake the settings for the IPadressing of your
Compact Vision System with the FCT (device manager of the
PlugIn SBO..M network"). Proceed as follows:
1. Create a connection to the device with the Device
Manager.
2. Set the network parameters of your Compact Vision Sys
tem with the Device Manager (IP address, network mask
and if applicable the IP address of the gateway).

Create connection to the device

Search function
for devices

The Device Manager offers a search function. This search

function enables a connection to be created to devices of
which the network address is not known. The search func
tion uses a special Ethernet procedure (Multicast). With this
procedure, messages can be transmitted simultaneously to
several stations or to a closed group of stations. The Multi
cast address 239.255.2.3. is used for this procedure.
If the search takes place within a network node, no special
configuration of the network node (router, server etc.) is
necessary. However, if devices which lie behind further net
work nodes are to be found, the network nodes must be en
abled for multicast. You must also adapt the properties of the
device search (search range and search duration) accordingly.
If you have any problems, please consult your system admin
istrator.

4. Commissioning

If you cannot create a connection to the device with the

search function of the Device Manager:

Manual address
specification for devices

Check whether the network nodes are enabled for

Multicast.

Check the set search range and search duration in the

Device Manager of the PlugIn SBO..M network".

If this is not successful, connect the device if possible

directly to your PC. In doing this you will exclude incorrect
network configurations.
Also, the search function will find the device even if the
setting Visibility at search requests" is set to Local
(1router)".
Or, if you use a new device on which the IP address set at
the factory is still valid, specify the IP address in the
Device Manager manually.

The Device Manager also offers the possibility of specifying

the current IP address manually in order to create a connec
tion (factory setting see section 4.2). Make use of this possi
bility if you know the current IP address of the device and if
your network nodes are not enabled for Multicast. When
specifying manually, do not modify the presettings under
Message port" and Data port".

Undertake network settings

If you have created a connection with the Device Manager,
you can also modify the network settings of the devices with
the Device Manager. You can:

Festo P.BESBOMEN en 0511NH

assign the IP address automatically

(requires a DHCP server in the network).

assign a fixed IP address.

49

4. Commissioning

Assign IP address
automatically

Select this setting if you are using a DHCP server in your

network and if the IP address is to be assigned automati
cally via DHCP (DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration
Protocol). The DHCP server manages a range of IP ad
dresses and assigns them to the DHCPcapable end ter
minals.

Specify fixed IP address

If you are not using a DHCP server, you must specify a fixed
IP address. Make sure here that the IP address and the
network mask of the devices are suited to the network
settings of your PC. If you have any problems, please
consult your system administrator.

Please note
Further information on IP addressing can be found in the
help for the PlugIn SBO..M network" of the Festo
Configuration Tool (FCT) software package.

Instructions on operation
Caution
Make sure that no danger can emanate from the
systems connected to the Compact Vision System.

Please note
Before important recordings, carry out a test in order to
make sure that the Compact Vision Systems have been
correctly commissioned with the FCT software package
and that your network is functioning faultlessly.
If the permitted temperature range is exceeded, this will be
recognized by the internal electronics and will lead to a de
fined error status. The following currentconsuming devices
will be switched off in order to reduce the energy consump
tion of the device as much as possible:

digital outputs

image sensor

internal lighting (only type SBOIM).

Data processing is limited. The error status is indicated.

Caution
Further heating beyond this point can lead to uncontrolled
error functions.
Make sure that the max. permitted temperature range is

not exceeded (see Technical Specifications).

4.4.1

Setting the lens

In order to achieve good recordings, you must undertake the
following settings depending on the object/motif and the
relevant recording conditions:

focus the object

set the aperture (only type SBOCM...)

set the exposure time, amplification and image quality

with the FCT software package.

A test image, e.g. a socalled Siemens star, is often used for

setting and checking the sharpness. For this purpose the
camera is aimed at the test image and the test image is then
focussed.
Appendix A.3 shows a Siemens star which you can use as a
test image.
The Siemens star is a circle with alternate white and black
segments. The segments run to the centre but do not overlap.
Cameras cannot reproduce optimally the centre of such a test
image.
An unsharp range will be visible, the socalled grey ring. The
smaller the grey ring is, the better the lens will be focussed.

Trigger signal
The trigger signal is transmitted via the inputs I0 and I1.
The trigger condition is fulfilled if:

there is a 0signal at I0 and

a 1signal at I1.

This link enables you to trigger with positive edges as well as

with negative edges. In order to do this, connect the unused
trigger input to the relevant active level (trigger input I0 to
GND or trigger input I1 to +24 V DC).
When the system is ready for recording and is waiting for the
trigger signal, the recording status LED (D) flashes yellow. If
the trigger signal is present, the recording LED (C) will light up
yellow for 250ms (see also section 5.1.1).

Conditions of use for "Electronic documentation"

I. Protection rights and scope of use
The file of your choice is subject to
safeguarding provisions. Festo or
third parties have protection rights for
this electronic documentation which
Festo provides on portable data stor
age devices (diskettes, CD ROM, car
tridge discs), as well as in Internet
and/or Intranet, always referred to in
the following as electronic documen
tation". In so far as third parties have
whole or partial right of access to this
electronic documentation, Festo has
the appropriate rights of use. Festo
permits the user the use under the fol
lowing conditions:
1. Scope of use
a) The user of the electronic documen
tation is allowed to use this documen
tation for his own, exclusively com
panyinternal purposes on any
number of machines within his busi
ness premises (location). This right of
use includes exclusively the right to
save the electronic documentation on
the central processors (machines)
used at the location.
b) The electronic documentation may
be printed out on a printer at the loca
tion of the user as often as desired,
providing this printout is printed with
or kept in a safe place together with
these conditions of use and other user
instructions.
c) With the exception of the Festo
Logo, the user has the right to use pic
tures and texts from the electronic do
cumentation for creating his own ma
chine and system documentation. The
use of the Festo logo requires written
consent from Festo. The user himself
is responsible for ensuring that the
pictures and texts used match the ma
chine/system or the relevant product.
d) Further uses are permitted within
the following framework:
Copying exclusively for use within the
framework of machine and system do
cumentation from electronic docu
ments of all documented supplier
components.
Demonstrating to third parties exclus
ively under guarantee that no data
material is stored wholly or partly in
other networks or other data storage
devices or can be reproduced there.
Passing on printouts to third parties
not covered by the regulation in item
3, as well as any processing or other
use, is not permitted.
2. Copyright note
Every "Electronic document" receives
a copyright note. This note must be
included in every copy and in every
printout.
Example: 2003, Festo AG & Co. KG,
D73726 Esslingen, Germany

0310d

3. Transferring the authorization of

use
The user can transfer his authorization
of use in the scope of and with the li
mitations of the conditions in accord
ance with items 1 and 2 completely to
a third party. The third party must be
made explicitly aware of these condi
tions of use.

II. Exporting the electronic docu

mentation
When exporting the electronic docu
mentation, the licence holder must
observe the export regulations of the
exporting country and those of the
purchasing country.

III. Guarantee
1. Festo products are being further
developed with regard to hardware
and software. The hardware status
and, where applicable, the software
status of the product can be found on
the type plate of the product. If the
electronic documentation, in whatever
form, is not supplied with the product,
i.e. is not supplied on a data storage
device (diskette, CD ROM, cartridge
disc) as a delivery unit with the rel
evant product, Festo does not guaran
tee that the electronic documentation
corresponds to every hardware and
software status of the product. In this
case, the printed documentation from
Festo accompanying the product is
alone decisive for ensuring that the
hardware and software status of the
product matches that of the electronic
documentation.
2. The information contained in this
electronic documentation can be
amended by Festo without prior notice
and does not commit Festo in any way.

IV. Liability/limitations of liability

1. Festo provides this electronic docu
mentation in order to assist the user in
creating his machine and system do
cumentation. In the case of electronic
documentation which in the form of
portable data storage devices (disk
ettes, CD ROM, cartridge discs) does
not accompany a product, i.e. which
are not supplied together with that
product, Festo does not guarantee
that the electronic documentation
separately available / supplied
matches the product actually used by
the user. The latter applies particu
larly to extracts of the documents for
the users own documentation.
The guarantee and liability for separ
ately available / supplied portable
data storage devices, i.e. with the ex
ception of the electronic documenta

tion provided in Internet/Intranet, is

limited exclusively to proper duplica
tion of the software, whereby Festo
guarantees that in each case the rel
evant portable data storage device or
software contains the latest status of
the documentation. In respect of the
electronic documentation in Internet/
Intranet it is not guaranteed that this
has the same version status as the
last printed edition.
2. Furthermore, Festo cannot be held
liable for the lack of economic success
or for damage or claims by third
parties resulting from the use of the
documentation by the user, with the
exception of claims arising from in
fringement of the protection rights of
third parties concerning the use of the
electronic documentation.
3. The limitations of liability as per
paragraphs 1 and 2 do not apply if, in
cases of intent or wanton negligence
or the lack of warranted quality, liabil
ity is absolutely necessary. In such a
case, the liability of Festo is limited to
the damage recognizable by Festo
when the concrete circumstances are
made known.

VI. Safety guidelines/documentation

Guarantee and liability claims in con
formity with the regulations men
tioned above (items III. and IV) can
only be made if the user has observed
the safety guidelines of the documen
tation in conjunction with the use of
the machine and its safety guidelines.
The user himself is responsible for en
suring that the electronic documenta
tion, which is not supplied with the
product, matches the product actually
used by the user.
