OVERVIEW: Natural harbour and multipurpose port handling cruise,


passenger, containers, Ro-Ro, LPG, and dry and liquid bulk. Bulk cement
terminal and LPG facility located at High Point, Crabbs Peninsula.
LOCATION: St Johns Harbour located northwest coast. Crabbs Peninsula
located northeast coast, approximately 10 km. east of St Johns.
CHARTS: BA Charts No. 585, 1025, 2064 and 2065.
PORT LIMITS: All the waters enclosed by straight lines running:
a) due west from Weatherills Point forming the northern boundary
b) due north from Shipstern Point forming the western boundary
c) by the coastline running from Weatherills Point to Shipstern Point
forming the eastern and southern boundaries.

and No. 1 Channel Buoy. Approximately 0.7 n.m. NNW of Pillar Rock Light.
Depths 12.2 13.7 m. Anchorage for vessels up to 16.45 m., 2 n.m. NE of
Sandy Island.
Safe anchorage available at Parham Harbour, (High Point, Crabbs
Peninsula), for vessels up to max. draft 3.0 m.
PRATIQUE: Pratique given at berth. Suspected infectious diseases must
be reported to Port Health Inspectors in advance of vessels arrival.
VHF: Port Authority maintains watch on Channel 16 during normal working
hours. Watch is also maintained by Pilot and tugs on Channel 16 one hour
before ETA of any vessel. Tugs and Oil Terminal Pilot use Channel 6 during
berthing operations.
VTS/RADAR: Not available.
TUGS: 21,500 h.p. harbour tugs. Tugs join vessel in Approach Channel.
Tugs lines normally used. No charge.

CONTAINER FACILITIES: Authority owns 1 large truck with adjustable


spreaders capable of lifting fully loaded 20 and 40 ft. containers.
115 ton container lift truck, 2 Champion truck tractors, 1 GMC truck
tractor, 620 ft. and 240 ft. container chassis, 120 ft. and 140 ft.
container lift frames and 92.5 ton forklift trucks.
PASSENGER FACILITIES: Cruise ship facility located at Heritage
Quay and Nevis Street Pier. Full passenger facilities available. Ferry service
to Barbuda, operated by The Barbuda Express from Brysons Wharf.

Sea Island Jetty: Facilities: A concrete platform, length 54.8 m., with four
mooring dolphins, overall length 228.6 m. The jetty platform is protected by
five foam filled Yokohama fenders. Depth alongside 10.67 m. (MLW). Max.
draft 9.75 m. (deeper draft subject to terminal approval). Max. load
displacement 22,000 tons. Berthing on south side only. Port side alongside
with the assistance of two tugs.
Mooring arrangement 2 2 2 fore and aft. Distance to shore is 0.74 n.m.
Pipelines: 116 in. crude line with 112 in. hose; 18 in. gasoline line and
18 in. distillate line each with 16 in. hose; 14 in. LPG line; 13 in. fresh
water line. One grade at a time with max. throughput of 1,500 bbls./hr. and
max. back pressure of 120 p.s.i. Hose connection, port side midships.
Sea Buoy: Facilities: A CBM of five mooring buoys (3 head buoys and 2 stern
buoys). Distance to shore 1.28 n.m. No slop residue discharge facilities
available.
Pipelines: 116 in. crude line with 112 in. hose. Hose connection, port
side midships.

CRANES: Authority owns 1150 ton P&H mobile crane and 1104 ton
Liebherr mobile crane.
275 ton cranes are available on dockside, provided by a private
contractor.
CARGO HANDLING FACILITIES: Port Authority has available
540 ton reach stackers, 62.5-15 ton forklifts, 640 ft. chassis, 620 ft.
chassis, and 4Jockey trucks.

STEVEDORES: 48 hours notice is required to arrange gangs. Average
load or discharge rate is 10 t.p.h., 25 containers per hour.
Working hours: 0700 1800 daily. Overtime possible.
Hatches: Opening and closing normally carried out by ships crew.
Cargo Gear: Loading and discharging effected both by shore and ships
gear, but mainly by shore gear.
WASTE DISPOSAL: Garbage collection available through Agent.
SLOPS DISPOSAL: Waste oil service is available by truck. There is no
shore tank.

WEATHER/TIDES: Rainfall: Average rainfall 1143 mm. Antigua has
two seasons. The wet season coincides with the most active part of the
hurricane season from July to November, and a dry season from December
to April. There is a noticeable peak in May due to the change between winter
and summer weather systems.
Relative Humidity: 77%.
Temperature: Average temperature 27C, range 24 32C. Highest
temperatures occur from July to September, lowest temperatures between
December to March.
Wind: Average wind speed 12 knots, generally from E ESE. Wind speeds
are higher from December to April, gusts frequent between June
and November.
DELAYS: Delays due to unavailability of berth are very infrequent.
However, from December to April, 24 hours delay can be expected.

Vessel: Chemical tanker, 40,700 d.w.t.
Berth: Sea Island.
Drafts: The arrival draft was 7.95 m. fore and aft.
Berthing: The berth consists of a jetty with four dolphins, two fore and aft
and a mooring buoy forward. For berthing, we let go the starboard anchor
to three shackles in the water, so controlling the bow as we berthed port side
alongside. There are four large Yokohama fenders in place at the jetty. The
mooring lines tie-up was 3-2-2 fore and aft. Propylene ropes were used, with
the springs being steel wires.
Cargo Handling Facilities: Two hoses were used for the discharge.
Gangway: Ships gangway was landed onto the jetty.
