If you cannot access the whole scan area with the probe, slacken the cap screws
(2-270: CMM 32-20-34 or 2-560: CMM 32-20-53) and move the compensator (2-265:
CMM 32-20-34 or 2-550: CMM 32-20-53) to increase the gap between the pipe
sub-assembly (2-65A: CMM 32-20-34 or 2-130: CMM 32-20-53) and the main fitting.
(4)
All ultrasonic indications in excess of 20 % of full screen height that appear at between
6 to 8 on the timebase are cause for rejection.
(5)
If no crack like indications are observed, reposition the compensator (2-265: CMM
32-20-34 or 2-550: CMM 32-20-53) and tighten and lock the cap screws (2-270: CMM
32-20-34 or 2-560: CMM 32-20-53): refer to CMM 32-20-34 or 32-20-53.
(6)
Report details of any main fitting that the inspection has cause to reject to the Technical
Manager of your regional Technical Assistance and Spares Support Center.
Identification
(1)
Write the Service Bulletin number 146-32-174 in the applicable aircraft and landing
gear records each time you do this Service Bulletin.

MESSIER-DOWTY LIMITED GLOUCESTER
NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING DEPARTMENT
PRODUCT SUPPORT TECHNIQUE NO. NDTPS 282U ISSUE 2
Ultrasonic Inspection of the BAe 146/AVRO 146 RJ Nose Landing Gear Main Fitting
1. Scope
1.1.
This technique is designed for the ultrasonic detection of internal circumferencial cracking on the
BAe 146/AVRO 146 RJ upper part of the forward face of the main fitting: refer to Figure A1. This
technique supersedes and replaces technique No. NDTPS 282U Issue 1. The differences
between this technique and its previous issue are shown in bold text.
1.2.
The inspection can be carried out on aircraft without the removal of paint providing that the paint
finish is reasonably smooth, clean and sound.
1.3.
The scan area encompasses a 120 degree, 5 by 1 in (127 by 25,4 mm) circumferencial band
using 40 degree upward shear wave scans from the forward face of the main fitting, ensuring full
coverage of the scan area: refer to Figure A1.
1.4.
This technique is only valid when carried out by skilled NDT practitioners qualified to PCN/ASNT
Level 2 or equivalent.
2. Equipment
2.1.
2.2.
A 5 MHz, 0.16 to 0.23 in (4 to 6 mm) 40 degree flat shear wave probe with a rear entry connector:
refer to Figure A1 (drawing no. MO 3015, part no. 505984, available from Buehler Krautkramer,
University of Warwick Science Park, Coventry, CV4 7HS, United Kingdom).
2.3.
An ultrasonic 3/64 in (1,2 mm) flat bottomed hole 40 degree Aluminium Reference Block
DRT74469, available from Messier-Dowty Limited Gloucester: refer to Figure A2.
2.4.
3. Calibration Procedure
3.1.
Set up the equipment on the Reference Block DRT74469, with the probe positioned as shown
aiming towards the 3/64 in (1,2 mm) flat bottomed hole: refer to Figure A2.
3.2.
Set the maximum signal from the 3/64 in (1,2 mm) flat bottomed hole at 6 on the time base at a
reference amplitude of 80 % full screen height. Then add 7dB prior to inspection.
3.3.
Identify and measure the 5 by 1 in (127 by 25,4 mm) ultrasonic scan area: refer to Figure A1.

4. Inspection Procedure
4.1.
Place the 40 degree probe facing upwards on the scan area: refer to Figure A1.
4.2.
Carefully inspect the entire 120 degree, 5 by 1 in (127 by 25,4 mm) scan area towards the upper
inner radius (which is not otherwise detectable): use upward facing 1 in (25,4 mm) longitudinal
overlapping scans as shown in Figure A1.
NOTE : Below the scan area there can be a change in section or machining grooves giving
consistent mechanical circumferencial ultrasonic signals outside the scope of this
inspection.
5. Inspection Standard
5.1.
Defect indications due to circumferencial internal cracking on the upper inner diameter will
appear at between 6 to 8 on the time base as shown in Figures A1 and A2.
5.2.
All ultrasonic indications in excess of 20 % of full screen height that appear at between 6
to 8 on the timebase shall be rejected and returned to Messier Dowty Ltd for further
investigation.
