ALERT OPERATORS TRANSMISSION - AOT

SUBJECT: ATA 34 – Wrong torque instruction during Pitot probe installation

AIRCRAFT TYPE: A330,A340

OUR REF.: A34L008-20 Rev 00 dated 07-DEC-2020

EFFECTIVITY DATE: 7 Dec 2020 + 2 working days

1. AIRCRAFT AFFECTED

All A330 and A340 aircraft

2. REFERENCED DOCUMENTATION

2.1 APPENDIX

Appendix 1: reporting sheet

2.2 REFERENCES

Ref [1]: AMM task 34-11-15-400-801-A – Pitot Probe installation – July 2020 revision.

Ref [2]: AMM task 34-11-15-400-801-A – Pitot Probe installation

- October 2020 revision (or subsequent revision)
- or Temporary Revision (TR) of ref [1] (if October revision is not available).

Note: Temporary revision of ref [1] is accessible in AirNav tool: red clip hyperlink on the top left of the
task ref [1].

3. REASON

3.1 FACTS

An erroneous torque value to install the Pitot Probe was included in the July 2020 revision of the AMM ref
[1] [between 0.765 and 0.935 m.N (6.77 and 8.27 lbf.in)].

The correct torque value is between 0.765 and 0.935 m.daN (67.7 and 82.74 lbf.in).
The Ref [2] AMM revision includes back the correct torque values.

The affected nuts are the 2 nuts used to install each Pitot Probe from the inner side of the fuselage (item
(3) on the following AMM (ref [1] and ref [2] figure).

3.2 CONSEQUENCES

This under torque, combined with the vibrations, may cause

 the Pitot bolts to become loose or break.
 the Pitot not to be maintained correctly in place, and therefore to move and to be then not
correctly aligned with the airflow.
 erroneous total pressure measurement.

3.3 AIM

The aim of this AOT is:

 to identify the aircraft impacted by the corrective action (ref §4.2)
 to provide operators with the corrective action on affected nuts item (3) (ref §4.2)

4. SHORT TERM ACTION

NOTE 1: This AOT is expected to be classified mandatory by an Airworthiness Directive (AD). The
accomplishment instructions marked as Required for Compliance (RC) must be done to comply with
the AD. “RC” is indicating these paragraphs accordingly.

NOTE 2: The accomplishment instructions of this AOT include procedures given in other documents
or in other sections of the AOT. When the words ’refer to’ are used and the operator has a procedure
accepted by the local authority he belongs to, the accepted alternative procedure can be used. When
the words ’in accordance with’ are used then the given procedure must be followed.

NOTE 3: The access and close-up instructions, not comprising return to service tests, in this AOT do
not constitute or affect the technical intent of the AOT. Operators can therefore, as deemed
necessary, omit or add access and/or close-up steps to add flexibility to their maintenance operations
as long as the technical intent of the AOT is met within the set parameters.

The actions to be performed in the frame of this AOT are described in the flowchart in §4.2.2:
1. Determination if aircraft is requiring the corrective action,
2. Description of the corrective action to be performed,
3. Report accomplishment to Airbus.

4.1 PLANNING AND MANPOWER

4.1.1 RC - ACCOMPLISHMENT TIMESCALE

The check, and if required, the re-torque of the nuts (item 3) Ref [1] shall be done within 30 days
starting from effectivity date of this AOT.

4.1.2 MANPOWER

The estimated time to perform the re-torque of subject nuts (as required by section 4.2 of this AOT) is:
0.5 MH per aircraft (3 Pitots).
Note: only 1 operator is necessary

4.2 DESCRIPTION

4.2.1 ACCESS

As the nuts are torqued from the inner side of the fuselage, there is no specific access for the re-torque of
the nuts (3).

4.2.2 RC - INSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS

A/C affected by the inspection instructed in this AOT.

4.3 SPARES AND TOOLING

As per ref [2], the torque wrench to be used for this task is a non-specific tooling: torque wrench including
the range between 0.765 and 0.935 m.daN (67.70 and 82.74 lbf.in)

5. FURTHER INFORMATION

5.1 IMPACTED DOCUMENTATION

The torque value has been corrected in ref [2].

From the publication date of the current AOT, only ref [2] shall be used for Pitot Probe installation.
