Lesson Plan
Lesson: Statistics and Probability
December 8, 2016
Grade 4
Outcomes Addressed:
4.SP.2 - Construct and interpret pictographs and bar graphs involving many-to-one
correspondence to draw conclusions
Opportunities for Assessment:
OF: Analyze the graph data to see that students have correctly changed the
representation from a one to one to a many to one scale.
Teaching and Learning Activities:
Activating - Show a video of a snowmobile race
Acquiring - each student plays the snowmobile race board game twice
Applying - as a class construct a bar graph with one block representing 3 race results
Differentiation of Instruction:
Verbal: explaining instructions and communicating their race results to the group
Visual: plot the information on large graph paper so that the whole class can see
Kinaesthetic: roll the dice and get up to the plot your information on the graph
Interpersonal: as a class graph the information to come up with a good sample of data
Intrapersonal: do their own part because they have to make sure their data is
calculated accurately
Materials Required
Snowmobile Race boards
Dice
Graphing paper
Markers
Ruler

Cross-Curricular/Real World Connections:
History: research the history of snowmobiles and races
ELA: write a short story that involves a snow race
Geography: find the type of climates around the world that snowmobiles are suitable
Physical Education: have students get toboggans and large dice and simulate it with
the students
Science: create a science experiment in an attempt to create snow
