ENGLISH 10 COURSE OUTLINE

MRS. FRASER
Welcome to English 10! As students of Earl Marriott Secondary there are a few things that I expect in
order for you to be successful this year.
Attendance
Participation
Effort
This also includes coming prepared for class with all of the necessary materials (please see the
required materials below). This also means having read and done your work needed for that day.
There will be some supplies available but they are limited in supply.
ENGLISH 10 CAN BE BROKEN DOWN INTO FOUR MAIN COMPONENTS TO
DEMONSTRATE COMPREHENSION, CONNECTION, CREATIVITY AND
COMMUNICATION:
Oral language, Reading and Viewing, Representing, and Writing
Students will develop:
Learning strategies: focus on individual learning styles and learning tools; group
dynamics/co-operative learning styles
Speaking and listening: awareness of bias; speaking/listening to peers in
discussions/presentations
Language: usage; grammar; sentence structure (variety, style); vocabulary development;
composition editing skills
Composition: personal, reflective writing; paraphrasing, summarizing; multi-paragraph
writing; and a novel study
The major units of study this semester will be Poetry, Short Stories, Composition, Novel Study, and
Drama.

ASSESSMENT:
This semester will focus on different types of assessment. Roughly, the marks break down in the
following manner. That being said, things are bound to change as we progress through the course.

You are expected to complete your own work and to submit work that has been prepared for this class
only. Plagiarism, submitting or presenting the work of another person as if it were ones own, will
result in an automatic failure on that assignment.
Assessment does not simply mean that I will mark your work and that you will receive a letter grade
or mark. Sometimes this means that I will read your work and provide you with written feedback
that does not contain a mark. This is so that you will focus on the qualitative feedback I offer you,
rather than the quantitative feedback represented by a grade. It is your responsibility to do
something with this feedback to improve your work. Please remember that you are welcome and
encouraged to come and see me anytime to discuss your progress in this course.
REQUIRED MATERIALS
Binder
Lined paper
Dictionary
Novel (for Silent Reading)
Dividers
Pencils/pens
Fine liner
Pencil crayons
ABSENT/LATE:
Absences must be excused by a parent/guardian if extensions are to be granted. Administration must
be notified for extended absences and assignment may not be provided during your non-attendance.
Failure to attend class may result in a lower grade than you are capable of and a possible failure of
this course.
Assignments handed in late reflect poor academic responsibility and a poor work ethic. Late
assignments will be accepted however evaluation will be at a higher expectation level due to the
extended time to complete assignment(s).
Arriving late for class also reflects poorly on your ability to be a responsible student. When you
arrive late, simply come into class and sit down and start to work, QUIETLY. I will make a note of
who has arrived late and when; continuously arriving late will result in a phone call home.
FOOD/DRINK POLICY:
I do not mind in the least if you come in with something to drink; however, do not take advantage of
me. Arriving late because you went and bought something to eat or drink is not acceptable.
CELLPHONE POLICY:
Email: fraser_k@surreyschools.ca

Cellphones are NOT to be used during class time. They should be in your locker or a in a bag or
backpack. Cellphones may not be out on desks and you may not listen to music during class time.
From time to time, cellphones or other technologies may be required for educational purposes; I will
let students know when to bring their phone out. Should a student have their phone out, one warning
to put the phone away will be given. Consequently, if the student continues to use their phone, I will
take it away for the rest of class. If a student is consistently on their phone, I will be contacting his/her
parent.
Overall, English 10 is a challenging course that will require a lot of work. I hope to make this
experience enjoyable and fun. I also understand that not everyone loves English and wants to pursue
a future in the arts; however, keep in mind that anything and everything you do involves the English
language. Speaking, listening, reading and writing are all a part of your everyday lives; EFFORT,
ENGAGMENT, and ENTHUSIAM are my expectations. Furthermore, I do care about all of my
students but I am not physically capable of checking in with every student everyday. Please keep me
posted on how you are doing and if you have any concerns or questions.
