Learning Assistant Positions


PHYS 2014 /PHYS 1114

Learning Assistants (LAs) are undergraduates who are hired to facilitate small-group
team-learning sessions in our large enrollment Physics service courses PHYS 2014 and
PHYS 1114. Our LAs are paid a modest stipend to work about 10 hours per week where
they provide supplemental instruction to our target courses. For Fall 2016, we have funds
to hire a total of 5 LAs - 2 LAs for PHYS 2014 and 3 LAs for PHYS 1114.

Qualifications:
Full-time undergraduate student with sophomore status or higher
Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
B grade or higher in PHYS2014, A grade strongly preferred
Excellent command of written and spoken English, and strong communication
and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications:
Target course (PHYS 2014) taken at OSU
Current Physics major or minor
Past teaching or tutoring experience

Workload and Duties: About 10 hours per week, usually doing the following items:
Attend complete set of lectures in target course (2 per week for 2014 and 3 per
week for 1114)
Attend one recitation section (1 hr/wk) for 2014 only
Attend teaching staff group meeting (1 hr/wk)
Prepare and lead 4-5 one-hour team learning sessions with about 15 students in
each group. These sessions should be scheduled around the most challenging
topic of the week. Specific instructions will be given by the course instructor.

Responsibilities:
Serve as a peer instructor for Physics supplemental instruction
Actively participate in teaching staff meetings and additional training
Maintain records of work completed, student attendance, etc.
Attend preliminary orientation session at beginning of semester.
Maintain a professional attitude and develop an effective rapport with the target
course students you tutor
Improve your understanding and abilities in physics by reviewing the target
course materials.

Salary of $10/hour, about $1500 per semester
