Language Arts:
Writing: We read the book I Love My Hair by Natasha Tarpley. After we discussed the reasons why
the main character loved her hair and talked about things we love about ourselves. We had a
great discussion and the students gave such thoughtful answers to their favorite thing about them.
We began to write about our favorite thing about ourselves with a focus really on using lowercase letters in our
words and making sure we have good finger spaces.
Handwriting: All capital letters! Lowercase letters: o, c, s, v, w, t, d, g, u, e, l, k, y, i, j, r, m, n, h, and b.
Math:
This week we investigated the weight of classroom items and compared them by using the terms heavier, lighter, or equal.
We used pompoms, unifix cubes, paperclips, books, and so much more with our balance scales. Next week we will be
taking a close look at different ways we can make numbers (such as 10 can be made 9 and 1, 8 and 2, 7 and 3, etc.).
Science:
We investigated materials to determine if they are a solid, liquid, or gas. Our favorite activity was the balloon pop! We
talked about that the states of matter can change when there is a cold or hot source. We began our many experiments of
matter changing with chocolate bars (melting with our body heat to a liquid and freezing it back to a solid). Next week we
will continue to explore with different experiments showing different states of matter. We will also continue to talk about
light sources and shadows.
