Good morning, everyone

Today, and going back to the topic of education, I would like to tell you a
little bit about the so-called Nobel Prize for Teaching.
Im referring to the Global Teacher Prize, a 1 million $ award given annually
to an exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to
their profession. Im sure you have heard of it, since a couple of Spanish
teachers, Csar Bona and David Calle, have both been on the list of
finalists.
But let me start from the beginning. The Global Teacher Prize was created in
2013 by Sunny Varkey, the chairman of the Varkey Foundation, a global
charitable foundation focused on improving the standards of education
for underprivileged children. Sunny Varkeys parents both were teachers,
and he created the award with the aim of highlighting the important role
teachers play in society.
In 2016, the Global Teacher Prize committee has received more than twenty
thousand applications from one hundred seventy-nine countries, and the
winner will be announced in March 2017.
The applicants have cut down to 50 finalists. One of them, as I said before,
is David Calle, a Math, Physics and Chemistry teacher famous for being the
creator of Unicoos, the most successful educational YouTube channel in
Spain: Unicoos has more than half a million subscribers. I was very happy
when I heard about David Calle being a finalist, because I remember
checking his very helpful online lessons, many years ago, every time I got
stuck with my Math homework.
To conclude, I would like to share with you something Kevin Spacey said
when he talked about this award, and I quote: Those that teach -devoting
their time and their talents to nurturing the talents of others- deserve to be
respected and celebrated.
Thank you so much for listening.
