BACKGROUND
The history of road accident in Nepal that it has
goined momentum in the past 10 years. Rate of population is
increasing day by day. Along with increase in population rate of
demand is also increases, similarly considerable growth in the
private and public vehicles. As a result people have been facing a
number of problems ; poor traffic management, pedestrian
vulnerability to accident .In Kathmandu more than 700,000
motorized vehicles are in operation. in present context road
accident become one of the major problem. The accident rate is
increasing rapidely . it is become very much necessary to reduce
the road accident in nepal

METHODOLOGY

During the research study the researchers visited some slected

location in Kathmandu valley Gausala,Chabahil oralo,Rato
pul,Bankali pindala isthan, purano baneshwor , taking samples of
vehicles and interviewing people of different fields (traffic
police, pedestrians, drivers, passangers etc..) and requested to fill
questionares ,

Objectives of study
Following are the major objectives of study:

To study various causes of road accidents and suggest remedial measures at

the potential location.
To locate the accident black spot in the potential area and giving awareness
to the pedestrians and driver.
To manage the condition of parking as the on street parking is one of the
leading causes of accidents.
To suggest the proper design and provide economic justification for the
improvement.
To evaluate the existing design condition of the area.
To analyze the year wise accident data of area to find out the rate of
accidents.

From above data maximum accident occurs in car and motor bike followed by truck and bus. So
generally, Car and Motorbikes are more porn to accident causing fatalities
Recommendation

there is an increase in accident immediately after completion of

the widening of road and decrease in the successive years. this is
because of unfamiliarity among drivers with the increased design
speed and unchanged behavior of pedestrians. the rate of
accident is decreasing after passage of some time as a result of
awareness program conducted by the project office and media
partners focusing safety of school children, bike riders, drivers
and pedestrians. sloping towards chawhil, way to the purano
baneshwor and near ratopul are the sections with higher number
of accidents. main contributing factors of road accidents in this
road are: carelessness, over speeding, defective vehicle, drink
driving and overtaking. age is another major cause of accidents;
25 - 34 years age group is found to be the vulnerable group
(41%). accidents corresponding afternoon hours (12:00-15:59) are
the highest (35%). motorbikes major mode of transportation is
involved in accidents (45.5%). the reason being motorcycles
consists of more than

half number of total vehicle plying in this section and major

violation of traffic rule being made by them. males involvement
in road accidents is higher than females corresponds to the
higher males who are involvement in outdoor works along with
their more aggressive nature. nearly 75% males are died.
following recommendations are made to ensure the traffic safety
along the gaushala area.
1. stringent enforcement of the provisions of the vtma for traffic
rule violators. continue and promote drunken driving testing
drive.
2. priorities for behavioral changes by immediate actions such as
road campaigns and visual demonstrations. conduct awareness
and training program for drivers to raise the level of
understanding and skills.
3. installation of traffic signs in each section and grade separated
intersections at gaushala, airport, purano baneshwor and ratopul
intersection.

Conclusion

Skilled human resource, proper plan and working modality,

availability of necessary fund, adequate legal provision and its
enforcement, awareness in all road users and proper coordination
are the essentials of road safety management.
National Road Safety Action Plan 2013-20 has already been
approved by the Government. The existing NRSC will be
revitalized with higher authority to delegate and implement its
various activities. To give it a legal standing, this council will be
backed with the necessary Act. This council will have the power to
delegate all the stakeholders and request regular reporting
required for monitoring the road-safety interventions. The council
should be headed at the ministerlevel as it ensures higher priority
that the council activities demands in terms of budget provisions
and manpower resources allocations. It is anticipated that all the
stakeholders act in a coordinated way to enhance the road safety
in the country.
