Academic Language:
- Pattern: lines and shapes that repeat themselves
- Collage: a picture created by gluing flat surfaces together

History:
Henri Matisse was a French artist. He lived from 1869 until 1954. Matisse painted in the
Fauvist style, which means he used a lot of bright colors in his abstracted artwork.

Procedures (Appx. 2 class days):

Day 1: Students will be introduced to the artwork of Henri Matisse. The class will discuss
Matisses use of color and pattern in his artwork. The class will learn how to hand out supplies,
and how to label their artwork correctly. Each student will pick a background piece of
construction paper. The students will use crayons to decorate their construction paper with
patterns (this will serve as their wallpaper).
Day 2: The students will use collage materials to complete their projects. After passing out
necessary collage supplies (glue, pencils, markers, scissors), each table will go to the supply
center to pick out patterned paper for the table cloth, and will get scraps of white, blue, and
orange to make the fish bowl. The class will work through each stage of the collage process
together.
