Distributed Leadership in Action

Key Takeaways :

The following are some of the takeaways from the article :

Distributed leadership theory is an emerging concept that relies on the

guidance
and direction of multiple human resources in attaining a goal in a
successful manner

In these days due to high accountability on the part of all leaders, various
leaders and department heads have to work together to achieve the goal.
These interdependent relationships necessitate a distributed perspective
on leadership, whereby leadership responsibilities are shared by multiple
individuals at different levels of the organization.

This view of leadership allows the organization to benefit from the

combined expertise and joint interaction of all colleagues. Together, this
group can work in concert toward a common goal so that the outcome is
greater than the sum of their individual actions .

As per this model each specific leader as is never a complete person as he

always needs all others contribution for completing a task fruitfully

Distributed leadership moves beyond the philosophy that leadership

comes solely from the
formal position of a particular person and instead frames leadership as a
practice that involves an array or group of individuals whose dynamic
interactions mobilize and guide teachers in the process of change and
bringing about improvements.

Distributed leadership does not take the responsibility and authority of

leading the group
away from the leader. Most importantly, distributed leadership does not
mean that there is not anyone responsible for the overall organization.
Instead, it requires the leader to understand the synergistic relationship
between various aspects or parameters like leadership and organizational
structures, vision, and culture.

The concept of distributed leadership argues that the job of administrative

leaders is mainly about recognizing and enhancing the skills and
knowledge of people in the organization, in the process creating and
enriching human capacity.

Distributed leadership is a framework with which one can view the

practice of leadership. According to me Distributed leadership is not an
answer to how to lead well but instead is a way of looking at leadership
practice.
Lastly, distributed leadership means cultivating or inculcating a system
that holds
various pieces of the organization together in a mutually interdependent
and productive
relationship with one other, and holding individuals accountable for their
contributions to the collective result
