Basic Casino Strategy: What you should know
before first gambling for real money
First, I will explain you the Basic Casino Strategy. It is independent
from the game you will end up playing. It is a common strategy for all
kinds of casino games like Roulette, Black Jack or Slot Machines. In
the next chapters I will introduce you to the particular strategies for
the mentioned three games.

Is there an optimal strategy for gambling?

First of all: all online casino games except Poker depend on luck. The
rules of Roulette, Black Jack or Slot Machines are set in a way that in
the long run the house will always win. Therefore, in the long term it is
not possible to earn money playing in casinos. Certainly, it is possible
to have a lucky streak or leave the casino as a big winner at some
nights, but in the long term the money will always stay with the house.
Unlike Poker where you play against other players and where you can
make money using the optimal strategy casino games are a losing
deal.

For this reason it should get clear that there are no professional
Roulette players and that you should focus on how to get the most fun
of your money before it ends up with the house.

With the following strategies I want you to achieve that objective:

Casino Bankroll Management

Bankroll Management is a very important term for all games that are
played for real money. This applies not only to casino gambling but
also to games of skill like Poker or to investments in stocks.

Bankroll Management aims to use your capital that is available for

gambling in a way that you are able to win a nice amount of cash and
keep losses as low as possible. The very same strategy has to be used
at the Roulette or Black Jack table. We can perfectly illustrate that with
the following simulation:

In this simulation we sent a gambler into a virtual casino to play
European Roulette. To get meaningful results this gambler sat down at
the Roulette table 100,000 times and played 100 games each time.
Only even bets have been placed, this means: e.g. bet on red
(single-chance). Take a look at the red circles in our graphic. There
you see:

Our player didnt make any loss in just over 5% of the cases.
More than every twentieth casino night ends for our virtual
player with the same amount of money he started with or even
with a profit.

In 50% of the casino visits with 100 games of Roulette our

player lost less than 8 bets.

In 95% of the cases the loss was less than 21 bets. This means
that only once out of 20 times more than 21 bets are lost in 100
games.

That way, losing more than 30 bets in 100 games is virtually

eliminated (this happens every 250th time only)

What does that mean for you in concrete terms? Only bet a
small fraction of your capital each time,and only play even bets
(single-chances). Playing Roulette your deposit shouldnt be more than
1/20 of your money. Then there is a probability of about 95% that you
havent lost all your money after playing 100 games. A concrete
example: If you have a total amount of 200 USD to play Roulette in a
casino you shouldnt bet more than 10 USD each game to make sure
you can play 100 rounds what means lots of fun for a long time.

Playing Black Jack using Bankroll Management and betting 1/20 of

your capital each time prospects are even better. With the optimal
strategy your expected value is more than 0,99 while it is 0,973 at the
Roulette table. Hence, using this strategy it gets almost impossible to
lose all your money.

This is not exactly true for slot machines. We will come to that later.
But there you are better off playing slots with the lowest deposits.

The Doubling Strategy the Martingale Betting

System
There has already been much debate about the doubling strategy, also
known as the Martingale Betting System. It is about doubling your
deposit with every loss. The thought is that you will win sooner or
later playing single chance Roulette games (and Black Jack where the
probability of winning one game is approximately 50%). So losing first
10 then 20 and 40 USD and winning then 80 USD will result in an
overall profit of 10 USD what is equivalent to the initial deposit.

Named after its inventor the Martingale Strategy doesnt work

though because casinos set minimum and maximum deposit
amounts. So there is only a certain number of doublings you are able
to conduct and it is just a matter of time until you lose your bet of
2,560 USD (after losing 8 times in a row). Despite that something
seems not right when betting over 2,000 USD to make a profit of 10
USD. As a result you risk to lose big amounts of cash while only having
the chance to make tiny profits.

The Winning-Doubling Strategy
This strategy that could be called the Anti-Martingale-Strategy is much
nicer. It reduces loss risk but offers good prospects for higher profits.
Therefore, it is more diversified and ensures a bigger level of thrill
compared to the previously described Bankroll Management where
single-chance only games are played with constant equal deposits.

That is how the strategy works: once again, you play Black Jack or
Roulette with even bets, e.g. red or even numbers. You play with 10
USD. If you win you leave your initial deposit plus profit on the table.
Now you play with 20 USD. If you win now you leave everything on
the table again. Now you play with 40 USD. If you win you put the 40
USD profit in your pocket and start again with 10 USD. Of course you
can speculate on even higher winning streaks. Your profit doubles but
the probability to win the full streak is cut in half with every game.

Set a fixed amount of money when gambling to reduce

your maximal loss
Independent from the chosen strategy you should always walk into the
casino with a fixed amount of cash or deposit small amounts when
playing online . Leave your credit cards at home or if you gamble
online keep them without reach. In the worst case scenario you will
then only lose as much as you brought with you or deposited into your
account. What doesnt work with impulsive players is to buy chips for
100 USD when having another 200 USD in your pocket. Too often
gamblers will then turn the additional cash they didnt intend to use for
gambling into chips and then will lose that amount as well. This is also
true when playing from home. Set your limits and hold on to them. If
you feel like you cannot keep your limits you should ask your casino to
lock you out for a certain time (unless you won).

Define your time window

Another strategy is to set a certain time window for you to gamble.
The less time you spend in the casino the less time you have to lose

your money. Because there are no clocks in casinos (to take away any
sense of time) and the software of your online casino might cover the
time display of your computer, the best way is to set an alarm on your
phone, e.g. in 2 hours. When the alarm goes off you stop gambling
and wont place any more bets on that day.

Make use of bonuses and promotions

Online casinos spend tons of money to acquire new players. Thats
why you will receive a sign-up bonus at every casino you register at
for the first time. This bonus may be up to a few thousand USD and
depends on your initial deposit. For example, a 200% bonus for up to
3,000 USD means that you receive additional 200% when depositing
1,000 USD. So you can gamble with 3,000 USD although you only
deposited 1,000 USD. So is makes more sense to pay in a larger
amount of money for your first deposit. Often there will be reload-
promotions which might not be that lucrative though.

So lets have a closer look at the game specific strategies for Roulette,
Black Jack and Slots.

Roulette Strategy
The most important thing when playing Roulette is bankroll
management and placing even bets. As mentioned in the first chapter
you shouldnt bet more than 1/20 of your total cash at once. If you
place even bets (red/black, odd/even, 1-18/19-36) you will be able to
gamble for a long time.

The earlier mentioned Winning-Doubling-Strategy where you leave

your won money on the table and only return to your initial deposit
after 3 or more consecutive wins is more risky.

Roulette is overall a very fair game since 36/37 (above 97%) of

deposits are paid back to the players. Thereby it doesnt matter
whether you place even bets, column bets of 6, 4 or 2 fields or
whether you only play one number. The amount of profit in case you
win depends on the probability. It is important to know the difference
between European and American Roulette. The American Roulette has
a double-zero (00) next to the green zero (0), so the probability of
winning is lower. 36/38 or about 95% of the placed bets flow back to
the gamblers. If you are able to chose always play European Roulette
with only one single-zero.

What you shouldnt do is placing bets on events with low probability of

winning. Betting on single numbers may cause you to lose your money
quickly.

Also, you should bet only one chip per game. A typical behavior of
gaming addicts is to cover half of the Roulette table with their chips.
The overall probability then rises of course. But ultimately, due to
bigger bets those gamblers lose their money much faster than
moderate players.

Why the Doubling-Strategy / Martingale-Strategy doesnt work out at

the Roulette table I discussed above. Lets talk about another myth:
Making notes of numbers and the attempt to anticipate numbers by
analyzing past events. Needless to say that this is nonsense. The ball
and the Roulette bowl dont know where the ball landed in previous
games. As a result, every new game is independent from the previous
game. To the layman without any knowledge of mathematics this may
appear unusual if there is a streak of 7 consecutive reds. But this is

just as likely as 4 x red, then 2 x black and a red in the end. Gamblers
tend to trust in innate abilities to recognize patterns. But there are no
patterns in Roulette. It doesnt help to place bets on the number 27
just because that event didnt occur for a long time. This may be true
but the probability is not higher before the ball lands on the number
and then falls again miraculously. The only thing that is true is the law
of large numbers. If you play Roulette for a very long time all numbers
would have been picked relatively equally. Therefore, it makes no
sense to track statistics or look for patterns. It is not possible to
anticipate future numbers.

Not a strategy but more a trick may be to estimate in which sector the
ball will fall. This can be done with technical gadgets (not allowed in
casinos, impossible in online casinos) or with a trained eye so you can
call a sector just before the Rien ne va plus. But we are not aware of
the existence of such a skill. Another probability would be that certain
numbers get picked more often than others because of errors in the
construction of the Roulette bowl. To beat the house edge of 2,7%
that error must be really severe though. Moreover, in Roulette parts
move in opposite ways: the bowl and the ball.

Even if the bowl tends to stop at a certain sector more often there
would still be the ball that stops randomly.

Roulette strategy summarized: Roulette is pure gambling. Only place a

small amount of your total money on even bets and you will be able to
play for a long time. Everything else will cause you to lose everything
with a probability higher than 50%.

Black Jack Strategy
The strategy at the Black Jack table is way more interesting than in
Roulette as Black Jack is not all about luck. After all, you as the player
decide whether you want to see another card or not. You have
information on how well the house is positioned because the dealer will
always reveal his first card before you make any decision.
Furthermore, there is the possibility depending on the initial situation
to double down or get insurance. To explain everything in this eBook
in detail would go beyond the scope. I have attached a chart of the
optimal strategy from Wikipedia that will tell you the best move
depending on the situation. Soft means that you have an ace which
counts as 11 points. This means that you cannot go bust by taking an
additional card.

If you keep playing Black Jack extensively you should try to memorize
the optimal strategy. This way you will receive an expected return of
0,995 USD for each Dollar you bet. Using the optimal strategy, on
average the house will win 0,5% of your bet (compared to 2,7%
playing Roulette). For occasional players it is sufficient to stick to small
bets, just like in Roulette, and hit (ask for another card) obeying the
following rules:

Hit until you have 17 or more points

The advanced strategy:

This strategy also takes into account the dealers first card that is
openly shown to everyone. Dependent on that card you should stand
(do not take more cards) sooner or later.

Hit until you have 17 or more points if the dealers card is a

7,8,9,10 or an ace
Hit until you have 12 or more points if the dealers card is a 4,5
or 6
Hit until you have 13 or more points if the dealers card is a 2 or
3

Advanced strategy with an ace on your hand

An ace can be counted as 1 or 11 points. If you want to count that ace

as 11 points you should follow the following rules:

With 17 points consisting of 3 cards you should hit

With 18 points consisting of 3 cards you should hit if the dealers

card is a 9,10 or an ace

With 19 or more points consisting of 3 cards you should stand

Using this relatively simple strategy you can decrease the house edge
to a minimum and play with your money for a very long time. Stick
strictly to these rules and dont let you fool by your instincts or
emotions. It is also very important to play small amounts with every

hand so you dont lose your money too fast in case of an unlucky
streak.

Slot Machines Strategy
Slot machines are very monotonous as there is no interaction with

with Black Jack or Roulette you will not get rich by gambling at slot

machine with the lowest deposits. Although the won profits are lower

at least be able to play a lot of games.

You should pay special attention to the jackpot. The probability to win
the jackpot is always equally low. But if you are lucky you want to win
the biggest amount possible, right? Thats why, when choosing

always go for the one with the highest jackpot. If you gamble online
take your time and chose a slot machine where the jackpot hasnt
