Aluminium based metal matrix composites are newer materials having
many favourable mechanical properties and a wide range of applications from automotive to aerospace, gradually replacing the conventional engineering materials. Aluminium based metal matrix composites are gaining increasing importance because of their attractive properties of better specific strength, specific stiffness, wear resistance, excellent corrosion resistance and light weight. In recent years, the utilization of metal matrix composites has increased in the automotive, aviation, aerospace, construction and microelectronics engineering fields.
The purpose of this work is to study about the mechanical properties of
B4C reinforced aluminium matrix composites. Aluminium is the matrix metal having properties like light weight, high strength and ease of machinability. Boron carbide which has excellent hardness, strength and fracture toughness is added as reinforcement. The metal matrix composites are fabrication of aluminium alloy 6061 reinforced with different weight fraction of B 4C particles are produced by stir casting technique. After solidication, the samples are prepared and tested to nd the various mechanical properties like tensile strength, impact strength and hardness.
