Discover the World of
Hurtigruten
From the magnificent Norwegian fjords to the ice-filled bays of Antarctica,
Hurtigruten is renowned for its comprehensive and adventurous voyages to
some of the most remotely beautiful and dramatic coastlines on the planet.
With over 120 years of maritime experience and a fleet of fourteen comfortable
ships, we offer voyages that go beyond the realms of conventional cruises,
providing the best in specialist knowledge and expertise on journeys that
exceed expectations and provide an opportunity to encounter environments,
wildlife and people at the very ends of the Earth.
Our ships have been an integral part of Norwegian coastal life for over a
century, with daily departures from Bergen crossing the Arctic Circle to sail
deep into the heart of this spectacular landscape. Beneath the dazzling
brilliance of the Midnight Sun or Northern Lights, these regular sailings call
into remote ports never visited by commercial liners, delivering freight and
passengers to isolated communities lying amidst a backdrop of breathtaking
fjords. Our intrepid Nordic spirit also inspired us to go further, to explore
lands far beyond our natural horizons Spitsbergen, Greenland and Antarctica
- where regular shore excursions and on board lectures unveil some of the
most enticing locations on Earth.

welcome to hurtigruten
Hurtigruten
The Hurtigruten fleet consists of fourteen purpose-built vessels that have been specifically designed for the
waters in which they operate. At any one time no fewer than eleven of these impressive ships ply the route
along the Norwegian coast, affording a unique insight into the fascinating heart of its coastal communities.
The ships vary depending upon age and size, but all have an intimately relaxing atmosphere, with large comfortable pano-
ramic lounges, bars and restaurants serving a range of excellent cuisine. Our Explorer fleet also comes with Polar Cirkel or
Zodiac boats and a team of on board experts that allow greater freedom amongst these majestic landscapes. Many passen-
gers regularly return to enjoy these adventures and you can be assured of the best in specialist knowledge, with a crew and
staff committed to customer service.
Full information on our fleet, including daily schedules can be found on pages 102 121.

Our Environmental
Commitment
COASTAL ENCOUNTERS, ECOLOGICALLY AWARE
Jimmy Backe
Our voyages enjoy the wonders of some of the most pristine environments on Earth and
our key objective is to ensure that our trips are as environmentally responsible as possible.
The traditional Hurtigruten route along the Norwegian coast sails on scheduled vessels that
have supplied these communities for generations, thereby ensuring not only minimal impact
on the environment, but also a vital and historic lifeline for the coastal settlements.
Our Explorer voyages are accompanied by specialists and local experts with a deep
founded enthusiasm for the wildlife and environments that we encounter. Life on board sees
us utilising equipment to its maximum effectiveness, whilst smaller landing craft minimise
our impact on the coastline. In Antarctica, Hurtigruten is a fully accredited member of the
International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators (www.iaato.org), which promotes safe
and environmentally responsible travel to Antarctica. In addition Hurtigruten is a member
of the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO) which is an international
organisation ensuring cruises in the Arctic are carried out with the utmost consideration for
fragile, natural environments and local cultures. Our sister company in Spitsbergen has also
formed a partnership with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and is actively included in their
Arctic Programme (www.panda.org/arctic), whilst passengers and crew voluntarily collect
litter from the beaches during excursions, helping to reduce the risk to local wildlife.

The
Hurtigruten
story
Whilst the 19th century and the Industrial Revolution had brought comforts and
innovative advances to the citizens of Oslo and the southern ports, the region
beyond Bergen was still seen as a remote wilderness, hemmed in by dramatic
landscapes and unforgiving seas.
Captain Richard With
For 90 years the Coastal Express became the most important communication
link between the north and south and it is from these pioneering voyages that
the Hurtigruten tradition stems. Translating as fast route, it was the quickest
and most reliable passage into the remote lands of northern Norway, regardless
of weather conditions. Indeed it was not until 1983 that the mail delivery was
finally entrusted to road and air routes. It is this heritage and experience that
marks out Hurtigruten as one of the most professional and proficient expedition
voyage operations on the planet.

A land of sublime natural beauty, Norways breathtaking

A voyage for
all seasons
With endless days and endless nights, each season casts its own distinctive spell
on the Norwegian coastline and each voyage presents a unique and ever-
changing tapestry of awe-inspiring grandeur. From the extremes of the Midnight
Sun to the Polar Night, from temperate southern seas to the harsh landscapes
of the Arctic north, these incredible journeys are a dramatic fusion of light,
landscapes and unforgettable experiences.
As the sun returns to rejuvenate the Norwegian shores the temperatures begin
to rise as life returns to the land. Days become longer and springtime colours
break out across the landscape as the Arctic grip recedes. This is a time of
celebration and the Midnight Sun and May witnesses the festivities of Norwegian
National Day (17 May), when the coastal communities become a blaze of colour
and tradition. This is also the time of 24-hour daylight, one of the most popular
times to visit, when the glistening bays and icy landscapes are bathed in perpetual
sunshine and day and night lose all meaning. This is the main holiday period, so
the ships can get very busy we recommend to book early.

As summer fades the Norwegian coastline shifts from one beautiful season to
another, the russet, ochre and rouge of autumn creeping across the landscape
as we witness nature prepare for the long winter ahead. At this time temperatures
remain pleasant and with fewer passengers on board this is a tranquil time to
travel, enjoying the almost ethereal light playing across the icy world. As autumn
gives way to winter we sail through the Arctic twilight, watching as the tiny
clusters of houses along the coast begin to glow like warming embers against
the backdrop of snow-covered mountains. Wrapped in the cloak of a polar
winter this is the best time to view the incredible majesty of the Northern Lights
(Aurora Borealis), a celestial light show that is without parallel, when the dark
sky is lit with a shimmering curtain of unforgettable colours.

ever-changing tableau no two journeys are ever alike; the contrasting seasons,
wildlife and people a constant source of delight and fascination. Sailing nearly
always in sight of land, along one of the most captivating coastlines in the world,
they travel beyond the Arctic Circle, to tranquil hamlets and pristine bays that
are the very spirit of these unique voyages. Whether you travel through land-
scapes bathed in the perpetual daylight of the Midnight Sun, or beneath winter
skies shimmering with the colours of the Northern Lights, you will always find
these journeys informal, informative and without equal.

ports of call
As with the scenery en route it is the sheer variety of sights, sounds, smells and
surprises you experience which makes the coastal voyage such a delight! Many
of our ports of call along the way are little more than tranquil hamlets on tiny
islands, whose inhabitants depend for their very existence on the Hurtigruten
ships, bringing essential food and supplies, or carrying them to the nearest town
for shopping expeditions. Other ports of call are long established, bustling towns,
owing their prosperity to the fishing, mining or shipbuilding industries.

These unique and exceptional journeys present a fascinating insight into the
rich cultural heritage of these beautiful coastal waters. Travelling aboard the
Hurtigruten between Bergen and Kirkenes gives a rare opportunity to truly
discover something of the diverse and colourful traditions of these remote
communities, all set against the breathtaking backdrop of Norways coastal
landscapes. The three voyages concentrate on the music and folklore of the
region, as well as its diverse culinary fare, with a series of lectures and work-
shops that are designed to educate and entertain. In the company of guest
lecturers and experts and a constantly changing ensemble of dancers, musi-
cians and singers, you will be treated to a sensory feast of quite dazzling
cultural diversity. The folk music voyage includes an opportunity to not only
enjoy, but also take part in the traditional dancing, whilst on the gastronomy
voyage the emphasis is on the rich and varied cuisine for which Norway is
fast building an international reputation. The last of the three voyages ex-
plores the regions national dress and includes a remarkable insight into Sami
and Kven culture, as well as a chance to witness something of the colourful
traditions of these fascinating peoples.

beautiful port cities of the Baltic. This exceptional
voyage explores this rich history, as we journey
from London and along the remarkable Kiel
Canal to the stunning ports along the Scandinavian
and Russian coasts. Heading across the Channel
we visit Antwerp, and take in the gracious
magnificence of Amsterdam, whose 17th century
grandeur once lay at the heart of maritime trade.
Sailing up the River Elbe to Hamburg we then
continue along the Kiel Canal, one of the busiest
inshore waterways on Earth, and enter the waters
of the Baltic. This remarkable journey then takes
us to Rnne and on to Stockholm, The Venice of
the North, where we have an opportunity to
explore some of the most spectacular
architecture in Scandinavia before continuing to
Helsinki. Crossing the Gulf of Finland to the
Russian coast we then call in to spectacular St
Petersburg, as we follow the trail of the Hanseatic
merchants to Tallin in Estonia and then onto Visby,
before retracing our steps back to the port of
Hamburg and the end of our voyage.
