SOLAR POWER PONDS

ABSTRACT

The mining of non-renewable energy and the by-products they leave behind causes damage to
the environment and the fossil fuels contribute to global warming. So the continuous use of renewable
sources like wind, solar, thermal, hydro is recognized as sustainable because of their inexhaustion and their
eco-friendly contribution to the environment. So, the use of renewable energy source that is solar energy is
the only long term solution to the present global energy crisis.

Solar pond is a simple and low cost solar energy system which collects solar radiation and
stores it as thermal energy for a relative longer period of time. Salinity-gradient solar pond is one type of
solar collector with the ability to store thermal energy for long period of time and lower cost of construction
compared with the other type of solar collector. The temperature difference between the lower convective
zone and the upper convective zone is applied across the hot and cold surfaces of the thermoelectric
modules. This temperature difference can be used to power Thermo Electric Generators (TEG) for electricity
production.

This seminar results a TEG system to be powered by the hot and cold water from the Salinity-
gradient solar pond (SGSP). The system is capable of producing electricity even on cloudy days or at night
as the SGSP acts as a thermal storage system.
