Q.1

( ) {

Determine power analytically in each interval without any approximation and use prompt jump
approximation to solve the problem. Compare your results.
Q.2 Consider a reactor is a bare square cylinder 100 cm in diameter, composed of homogenous mixture
of Be and fuel (fissile). The reactor is to be controlled with a single black control rod 2 cm in radius and
located along the axis of the system. The reactor is critical with the rod fully withdrawn and there is a
20$ negative reactivity into the system when the rod is fully inserted. Determine the value of the infinite
multiplication factor for the system. [Use D = 0.5cm and t= 0:76cm-1].

Q.3 Consider a critical bare cylindrical reactor 100 cm in height and 80 cm in diameter. The reactor
consists of a mixture of Be and U-235 at room temperature. This reactor is controlled by 100 black
control rods 1 cm in diameter. Calculate the total worth of the rods.

Q.4 Cruciform rods used for the control of a certain boiling-water reactor consist of blades 25 cm wide
and 1 cm thick. The average thermal diffusion length in the core is 1.4 cm, =0.2 cm. If the total worth
of the rods is 10$, calculate m.

Q.5 A critical fast reactor assembly consisting of a homogenous mixture of Pu-239 and Na is in the form
of a bare sphere. The atom densities of these constituents are NF= 4 x 1021 atoms/cm3 and NNa = 2 x 1022
atoms/cm3. This reactor is to be controlled with 10 control rods which are consist of B4C at a density of
2.0 g/cm3. If the control rods 5 cm in radius and 75 cm in length, estimate the worth of the rods.

Q.6 A control rod 100 cm long is worth 50 cents when totally inserted. (a) How much reactivity is
introduced into the reactor when the rod is pulled one-quarter of the way out? (b) At what rate is
reactivity introduced at this point per cm motion of the rod?
