Recentdevelopmentofbulkmetallicglasses(BMG's)hasopenedthedoorforuseofthese
fascinatingmaterialsinstructuralapplications.
Thesealloysrequirecoolingratesofonly1100K/s,sofullyamorphouscastingsuptoacentimeter
thickcanbemanufacturedusingconventionalcastingmethods.
ForaZrTiNiCuBebulkamorphousalloy,tensilestrengthsof2GPaandfracturetoughness
valuesof~20MPam1/2havebeenreported.Withadensityof6.1g/cm3,thisBMGhasahigher
strengthtoweightratiothansteelsandmostofthesuperalloys.Thealloyexhibitsalmostno
plasticstrainatfailure,buttypicallyshowsupto2.5%elasticstrains.Thisabilitytoelastically
storelargeamountsofenergyperunitvolumemakesthealloyanexcellentspring.Infact,it'sfirst
commercialapplicationisasagolfclubhead.FigurebelowshowsthemicrostructureofBMGyou
maynotetheabsenceofanyperiodicityinit.
