Ingeneral,mostoftheengineeringmaterialsarepolycrystallineconsistingofmanysmallcrystals
ofvariablesizesalsoknownasGrains.Thefigurebelowshowsthegrainedstructureof
lowcarbonsteel.Therearewidevariationsofsizesofgrainsobservedfromafewnmtocm.The
randomorientationsofgrainsgenerateaveragemechanicalpropertiesincrystals,preventing
anisotropy.Forexample,foraBCCIron,ModulusofElasticityalongthediagonaldirectionis
around270GPawhereasthesamealongitsedgeisonly125GPa.Again,inhighperformance
applicationslikeTurbineblades,singlecrystalmetallicalloysarespeciallydeveloped,exploitingthe
anisotropy.
