BLENDED/ACTIVE LEARNING TEACHING METHODOLOGY

The objectives of the blended/active learning are to:

(1) Encourage independent and active guided learning to the students
(2) Enhance students information seeking skills by working outside the
regular class environments
(3) Develop students maturity by critical thinking based on information
obtained on certain chosen topics.
(4) Encourage student participation via peers coaching techniques

Instruction:
(1) Students are divided into several group and were given designated guided
assignment to complete.
(2) Approx. 2 hours of F2F class time + 2 hours of individual students learning
time is required to complete the assignment.
(3) Students are require to present the assignment to the whole classroom with
considerable understanding obtained during the working session.

Assignment Titles for each designated group.

1. Ferrous Alloy Steel & Cast Iron (Gray Iron, ductile iron, white iron,
malleable iron, compacted graphite iron). It must cover chemical &
mechanical properties, way to produce/process, advantages-limitation,
examples, application (Focus on 5W-1H elements)

2. Non-ferrous alloy Cu and its alloy, Aluminium and its alloy, Magnesium
and its alloy, titanium and its alloy, Refractory metal and noble metals. It
must cover build up & composition, microstructure & mechanical
characteristics, purpose & application, advantages & limitation,
microstructure shape (Focus on 5W-1H)

3. Thermal Treatment, Annealing (type of annealing), quenching, tempering.

It must cover 5W1H, purpose, application, advantages-limitation etc.

4. Hardening, precipitation hardening and cold-working. It must cover

5W1H, purpose, application, advantages-limitation, examples, impact of it
on material, etc.
5. Phase transformation, rate of phase transformation, continuous-cooling
transformation diagrams, kinetic consideration of solid-state
transformations, isothermal transformation diagrams (inclusive of how to
read the transformation diagram). Focus on 5W-1H

6. Mechanical properties/behaviour due to phase transformation (inclusive of

bainite, spheroidite, martensite, pearlite, tempered martensite). It must
cover the properties of said material due to phase transformation,
composition, microstructure, application, pros and cons (focus on 5W-
1H) etc.

Your task is to gather information on the given tittles, make it into

summarize form (with highlight the most relevant information), put it into
power-point slide presentation (max 1 group 3 slides only) with the most
creative ways (e.g. mind mapping, tables, etc.). Share with the whole class
in 20 minutes of your findings.
