CALCULATION

Calculate the Total Solids (TS), Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and Volatile Suspended
Solids (VSS) in the samples of water or wastewater using the equation below;
a)

Total Solids (TS)

Total Solids, mg/L = A - B x 106
C

Where; A = weight of evaporating dish + remaining solids, g

B = weight of dry empty evaporating dish, g
C = volume of sample used, mL

b) Total Suspended Solids (TSS)

Total Suspended Solids, mg/L = A - B x 106

c) Total Dissloved Solids (TDS)

Total Dissolved Solids, mg/L = A - B x 106

Where; A = weight of empty evaporating dish, g

B = weight of evaporating dish + sample after drying at 180 C, g

Based on the results that we obtained from experiment that we had conducted where we calculate
the weight of the solids in terms of concentration of total solids , total suspended solids and total
dissolved solids for both influent and effluent sample with 2 trials for each where we got the
average total solids , total suspended solids and total dissolved solids for influent sample from

the calculation that are 240 mg/l, 450 mg/l and 50 mg/l , while total solids , total suspended
solids and total dissolved solids for effluent sample are 50 mg/l, 130 mg/l and 50 mg/l. From this
we can say that the highest concentration of sample are the total suspended solids for both
influent and effluent sample with 450 mg/l and 130 mg/l on average. The least concentration are
the Total dissolved solids from the above samples for both influent and effluent.
