Method Statement
(MS)
MS - AD - MasterEmaco 8100 AP (Con ZR) - 10/2013

THIS METHOD STATEMENT COVERS PREPARATION AND APPLICATION OF MasterEmaco

8100 AP (Formerly Known As CONCRESIVE ZR) – A GALVANIC PROTECTIVE COATING
FOR STEEL REINFORCEMENT
METHOD STATEMENT: MasterEmaco 8100 AP (Formerly Known As CONCRESIVE ZR)
SINGLE COMPONENT, MOISTURE CURE EPOXY BASED ZINC RICH AND ACTIVE
PROTECTIVE PRIMER

1. GENERAL:
1.1. The area to be coated shall be marked on the drawings and on the structure.
1.2. All areas not to be coated, but which may be affected by spillage shall be fully masked.
Flora and fauna shall be protected.
1.3. Any further areas to be coated shall be at the discretion of the Engineer and subject to re-
measurement.
1.4. All deviations from the original Bill of Quantities or scope of works must be agreed in writing
with the Engineer before application starts.
1.5. MasterEmaco 8100 AP epoxy primer contains active corrosion inhibiting additives for the
protection of reinforcement steel.
1.6. MasterEmaco 8100 AP is a ready-to-use material that when mixed thoroughly forms a
coating that can be applied by paint brush to the clean exposed reinforcement.

2. PREPARATION:
Surface preparation: Steel reinforcement
2.1. Ensure the steel reinforcement is fully exposed with all concrete removed from behind the
steel.
2.2. Remove all loose surface rust / oxidation by means of wire brushing, grit blasting or high
pressure washing. Wipe surfaces down with a wetted cloth to remove any final traces of
oxidation (dust) and to cool down the steel surface if required.

3. MIXING:
3.1. Mix MasterEmaco 8100 AP with a paddle mounted on a slow-speed drill, or by hand, until
a smooth, lump-free “paint” consistency is achieved. This may take several minutes due to
the high Zinc content that tends to settle at the bottom of the tins during storage.

Page - 1 of 2
MS - AD - MasterEmaco 8100 AP (Con ZR) - 10/2013

4. APPLICATION:
4.1. Substrate temperatures must be a minimum of +5ºC and a maximum of +35ºC. The
minimum temperatures must be maintained during application and for at least 24 hours
thereafter for optimum curing of the product.
As a reinforcement primer:
4.2. Apply the mixed material in an even layer at approx. 0.13 kg/m² to the full circumference of
the prepared reinforcement using a soft paint brush. When the first coat has dried
sufficiently, (approx. 90 minutes) apply a second coat also at 0.13kg’s /m² (7.5m² / Litre)
4.3. It is important that this second layer has sufficiently cured before the repair mortar is
applied. When applying the repair mortar by hand or as a spray applied mortar this can be
done after approximately 2 hours.

5. CLEANING OF TOOLS:
5.1. While still wet clean brushes etc. with MasterTop Solvent No. 2. Once dry/cured the
material can only be removed mechanically.

6. LIMITATIONS:
6.1. Any steel reinforcement that has been treated with MasterEmaco 8100 AP must be over
coated / encapsulated by a repair mortar within 48 hours of application. MasterEmaco
8100 AP is NOT UV resistant and long-term exposure to UV light will degrade the material
and potentially lower its effectiveness as a corrosion inhibitor.

develop, aid in breathing and seek immediate medical attention.

On skin contact:
Wash thoroughly with soap and water. Under no circumstances should organic solvent be used. If
irritation develops, seek medical attention.

On contact with eyes:

Wash affected eyes for at least 15 minutes under running water with eyelids held open, consult an
eye specialist.

5.3. Advice for fire-fighters

Special protective equipment:
Wear a self-contained breathing apparatus.

Further information:
The degree of risk is governed by the burning substance and the fire conditions. Containers may
rocket or explode in heat of fire. Keep containers cool by spraying with water if exposed to fire.
Collect contaminated extinguishing water separately, do not allow to reach sewage or effluent
systems. Contaminated extinguishing water must be disposed of in accordance with official
regulations.

SECTION 6: Accidental Release Measures

6.1. Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures
Use personal protective clothing. Avoid prolonged inhalation. Avoid contact with the skin, eyes and
clothing. Avoid all sources of ignition: heat, sparks, open flame.

6.2. Environmental precautions

Prevent spread over a wide area (e.g. by containment or oil barriers). Contain contaminated
water/firefighting water. Do not discharge into drains/surface waters/groundwater.

6.3. Methods and material for containment and cleaning up

For large amounts: Pump off product.
For residues: Pick up with inert absorbent material (e.g. sand, earth etc.). Correctly dispose of
recovered product immediately.

found in section 8 and 13.

SECTION 7: Handling and Storage

7.1. Precautions for safe handling
Take precautionary measures against static discharges. Keep away from sources of ignition - No
smoking. Provide good room ventilation even at ground level (vapours are heavier than air).

Protection against fire and explosion:

Sources of ignition should be kept well clear. Take precautionary measures against static
discharges. Substance/product can form explosive mixture with air. Vapours are heavier than air and
may accumulate in low areas and travel a considerable distance up to the source of ignition.

7.2. Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities

Keep away from water.

Suitable materials for containers: tinned carbon steel (Tinplate)

Further information on storage conditions: Keep container tightly closed and in a well-ventilated
place. Keep away from heat. Avoid all sources of ignition: heat, sparks, open flame.

7.3. Specific end use(s)

For the relevant identified use(s) listed in Section 1 the advice mentioned in this section 7 is to be
observed.
