EE Main Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) consist of questions and an-
swers pertaining to clarifying the queries and doubts of JEE Main aspir-
ants. FAQs of JEE Main serve a great deal of purpose in aiding the students
to know various aspects of the engineering entrance examination. For the

JEE Main, conducted by CBSE, is the first stage examination for admissions to
prestigious IITs (Indian Institute of Technology) and ISM (Indian School of
Mines) Dhanbad. The entrance exam will be held in Offline as well as Online
mode. 12-13 lakh candidates appear every year for this national level exam for
admissions to 31 NITs, 18 IIITs and 18 GFTIs, which are the participating in-
stitutes of JEE Main. Top 2 lakh candidates of JEE Main are eligible to appear
for JEE Advanced, which is the second stage of entrance test for admissions to

JEE Main FAQs


Q: Who is eligible for JEE Main?
Ans: Only those candidates (General Category) whose date of birth falls on
or after October 01, 1991 are eligible to appear in JEE Main. However, in case
of Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Persons with Disabilities
(PwD) candidates, upper age limit is relaxed by 5 years, i.e. SC, ST and PwD
candidates, who are born on or after October 01, 1986, are eligible.

Only those candidates, who have passed their class 12th exam or any equiv-
alent qualifying examination in the preceding year or the year before preced-
ing year; or those who are appearing in their class 12th exam or any equiva-
lent qualifying examination in the current academic year as that of JEE Main
are eligible to appear in JEE Main.Candidates must have taken at least five
subjects in class 12th/qualifying examination in order to be eligible for writ-
ing JEE Main.

Q: How many times can one attempt JEE Main?


Ans: The number of attempts, which a candidate can avail at JEE Main, shall
be limited to three.

Q: What will be the mode of JEE Main?


Ans: JEE Main is generally conducted in offline as well as online mode in the
first and the second week of April every year.

Q: Is there a different criteria or section for NRIs/foreign students for


phone number?
Ans: NRIs or foreign applicants need to mention their mobile number in the
place/field of landline number.

Q: Is there any provision of changing ones preference for mode of


exam?
Ans: Yes, you can do it, but the mode of examination can only be changed
from offline (pen & paper based) to online (computer based) examination.

Q: If a candidate has passed 12th in the year prior to the preceding year
of examination, and has appeared for improvement in the preceding
year, what is he/she supposed to fill in the academic details section of
the current exam year?
Ans: Such candidates have to decide as to which percentage of marks i.e.
the year prior to the preceding year of the exam or the preceding year of the
current exam year is better and accordingly have to select the year and cor-
responding roll number in the first step of application form of JEE Main of the
current year.

Further, the candidates who have passed class 12th in the preceding year of
the examination and appearing in improvement examination of class 12th in
the current year of the examination, may fill the form in either of the follow-
ing methods:-

a) Select the year of passing class 12th as the preceding year and enter the
roll number, name of the board in the first step of the application form. In
the second step of application form, select yes in the column appearing for
improvement examination.

b) Select the year of appearing class 12th as the current year of the exami-
nation and fill the remaining form correctly.

After declaration of result of improvement examination, there will be op-


tion on the website to provide the correct roll number of class 12th in which
candidates result is better.

Q: Which thumb impression should be used while filling JEE-Main


form? What if a candidate has no thumb?
Ans: The scanned image of left hand thumb impression (right hand thumb
in case the candidate do not have left hand thumb or any finger if both thumbs
are not there) is to be uploaded during online submission of application form
of JEE Main. However, if a candidate has uploaded right hand thumb impres-
sion (by mistake), he/she need not to worry because the JEE Main Application
Form will not be cancelled because of this mistake and he/she will be issued
admit card for appearing in JEE Main as usual.

Q: In case photograph doesnt have name and date, would the form be
rejected?
Ans: Though Name of the candidate and date on which the photograph is
taken is to be mentioned on the photograph, but in case uploaded photograph
does not have name and date, the form will not be rejected and no correction
is required in such a case and he/she will be issued admit card for appearing
in JEE Main as usual.

Q: Could you clarify a little on how will NRI or a foreign student enter
his/her mobile number?
Ans: Such candidates should enter the mobile number of his/her relative
residing in India.

Q: What corrections are allowed to be made during the month of Janu-


ary in Online JEE Main Application Form?
Ans: The correction in particulars can be done only if the candidates have
paid the fee and completed all the steps of online application form of JEE
Main. The candidates can modify all the particulars (except change of exami-
nation center and change of mode of examination from computer based to

pen paper based examination) of his/her application form during the facility
of correction period. The balance fee, if any due to correction in particulars,
will have to be paid by the candidates during this period.

Q: When are the candidates appearing in class 12th examination in or


improvement examination in supposed to enter their roll number of
class 12th?
Ans: The roll number data of class 12th examination of is being collected
from all the boards and it will be linked on the website of JEE Main. The can-
didates at the time of downloading their admit cards of JEE Main will have
to enter their roll number of class 12th which will be verified with the data
received from the concerned board and thereafter it will be updated in the
database. In case, the roll number of class 12th of any particular candidate(s)
is not provided by the concerned board, such candidates will not be able to
download their admit card of JEE Main. The candidates appearing in improve-
ment examination of class 12th in the current year of exam will get a chance
in the last week of May or first week of June in the current year of exam to
confirm as to which result/roll number of class 12th (i.e. of the preceding year
or the current year of examination) they want to get considered for calcula-
tion of All India Rank of JEE Main of the current exam year.

Q: In case a transaction fails while paying the fee, what needs to be


done?
Ans: If the payment status of online transaction (by credit/debit card) is
not communicated by payment gateway in real time, then fee payment is
not completed. In this case, the candidates are required to pay the fees again
either through online transaction or by e-challan and to download the ac-
knowledgement page. Your amount of failed transaction of credit/debit card
will be refunded back within 7 to 10 days.

In case, fee payment is made through e-challan and the fee is not updated
on the website, the candidate has to contact the concerned bank/branch for
updation of fee. However, such candidates may also send the copy of paid e-
challan through e-mail on jeemain@nic.in.

Q: If a student fails to book his/her session for online examination af-


ter paying the fees, how will he know about the date and session of the
examination?
Ans: If a candidate does not make any selection, he/she shall be randomly
assigned a slot/date as per the availability of the same. Details of session and
slot will be mentioned on the admit card which can be downloaded from the
second week of March of the current exam year.

Q: Is there any provision for students if they wish to appear for both
the exams at different centers i.e Paper -1 (Computer based) and Paper
-2 (Pen and Paper based)?
Ans: Since Paper-2 is only in offline mode, a student who is appearing for
both the papers - paper 1 being online mode and paper 2 being offline mode,
will only get such centers that have facility for both the modes of examina-
tion. For example: Test centers for this could be PATNA: PEN & PAPER BASED
and COMPUTER BASED. Two different roll numbers and separate admit cards
cannot be issued to a candidate to appear at different centres for paper 1 and
2 separately.

Q: What is the Eligibility Criteria Conditions for Diploma Students in


JEE Main?
Ans: To appear in JEE Advanced, a diploma holder can apply in JEE Main,
but his/her rank and score for JEE Main will not be declared as diploma hold-
ers cannot apply for admission in NITs and CFTIs through JEE Main channel.

Q: Could you kindly name the boards recognized under Association of


Indian Universities?
Ans: You can visit the website www.aiuweb.org .

Q: What are HSC vocational courses?


Ans: Different states can have different HSC vocational courses, so students
of different states will have to verify it from their particular state.

Q: Is there any option available that the Hindi Medium paper comes in
both the languages?
Ans: Yes, Hindi medium paper will be bilingual in English and Hindi me-
dium.
