Case: A learner experiencing Dyslexia

As a student and taking up the subject Teaching of Listening and Reading I
find dyslexia as a major problem in teaching because it is a problem with in
the brain where it has difficulty to process written and spoken language.
There are cases where a highly intelligent individual is suffering dyslexia.

Definition
Dyslexia derives from the Greek prefix dys which means difficulty and root
word lexis which means word or language, it can be translated to difficulty
in words. Dyslexia is a neurobiological in origin. People who are suffering
from it is having a problem in recognizing letters or words such as spelling
and identifying the sounds of the letters thus people with dyslexia has a poor
experience in reading and vocabulary which can hinder the ability to learn.

5 underlying problems
1. Genes/ genetic Study shows that most of Dyslexia cases can be
passed down to your offspring
2. Phonological Processing Unable to know the correct sound of the
letters
3. Unawareness of Having Dyslexia Dyslexia is like Diabetes where the
person is not aware that he/she is suffering from dyslexia.
4. Acquired dyslexia The part of the brain whos responsible in language
skill is not functioning as they are meant to be thus the brain uses
other region of it to compensate due to brain injuries, stroke, or some
other type of trauma.
5. Brain anatomy: Having dyslexia doesnt mean your child isnt bright. In
fact, many people with dyslexia have above-average intelligence. But
their brain may look different from the brain of people who dont have
dyslexia. Consider, for example, the planum temporale. This area of
the brain plays a role in understanding language. Its typically larger in
the dominant hemisphere (the left side of the brain for right-handed
people) than in the right hemisphere. But if your child has dyslexia, the
planum temporale is probably about the same size on both the left and
right sides of the brain

Equivalent Solution
1. Although dyslexia is a continuous condition and it is commonly
transferred to our genes and it beyond our control but there are
activities to identify a child with dyslexia as early as preschool which
can help you prepare for the child in his/her future education.

Example: In home your child may frequently mispronounce words like

animal to aminal or in school where your child is not as noisy as her/his
classmates and only knew a few words.

2. Phonological processing can be corrected by therapy or special

education, some programs like they are able to remember letters by
letting them to listen to an audio book of letters and sounds.

3. Unawareness of dyslexia is a common problem in the field of teaching

and if you see early signs of dyslexia you must consult a doctor to
know the special needs of the child.

4. Because the brain uses the other region for language skill, it can be
enhance by therapy where the brain can get used to it and although
with delays in learning the result is promising.

5. Brain anatomy is similar to the problem above and can be fix by the
above statement also.

Conclusion:
In teaching profession we should know how the boundaries and
limitations of the individual whom we are teaching. In this way we can
formulate alternatives in teaching. The subject teaching of listening and
reading does not only tackles on the phase of reading and listening only but
also the understanding of how a child process this information and it is our
responsibility to enhance it.
