WhatIsReiki?
Reiki,aJapaneseword(pronouncedRAYkey)meansuniversallifeforce,orDivineenergy,
andindicatesasystemofhealingthatmanyfeelmayhavehaditsoriginsinTibet.This
practiceissaidtohavebeenhandeddownfromtheancientteachingsoftheVedas,a
compilationofscriptures thatweregiventothegreatRishis(wisemen)manythousandsof
yearsago.Theoldestknownexistingtextisover5,000yearsold.Althoughthismaybetrue,
itisalsotruethatthemodernfounderofReikiwasalsoverydeeplyinvolvedinShintoist
movementsindeed,therehadbeenatypeofShintoknownasRybuShinto,inwhichall
divinebeingswereconsideredtoequallybelongto,andbereveredin,bothBuddhismand
Shinto.Inthatsystem,theSunGoddess,Amaterasumikami(, Heaven
IlluminatingGreatDeity , HeavenIlluminatingGreatAugustDeityor

Reikiisnotareligion.Althoughthishealingpracticeisknowninallculturesthroughout
theworld.Ithasabuiltinspiritualdimension.Reikiisaunityconcept,becauseitisnow
acceptedglobally.Reikiteachesunityandharmony.Reikiisinharmonywithnatureandcan
beusedtohealplantsandtrees,peopleandanimals,andcanevenbeusedtohelppurifyand
harmonizewaterandair.
ReikiwasdiscoveredatthebeginningofthetwentiethcenturybyaJapanesemannamed
MikaoUsui.Helaterdevelopeditintoasystemofhealingthathepassedontoothersby
meansofasystemofempowerments,orattunements(inJapanese,thewordisreiju,which
meansreceivetheenergy/spirit).Itisnowpracticedbymillionsaroundtheglobe.

ModernConnections
GrowingknowledgeofotherancienthealingsystemsshedslightonthepreUsuioriginsof
Reiki.Shintoismisnormallythoughtofasjustworshipingonesancestorsandrecitingnorito
(dailyprayerrituals).However,itisbelievedthattherewasalsoahealingsystem,taught
orallyfromteachertostudent,thatusedkotodama, thepoweroftheWord,thatissimilarto
theReikimethodofhealingandthatinvolvesinitiationandattunement.Itislikelythatwhat
PatrickZeiglerrediscovered,orredeveloped,wasformerlyanancientTibetantechniquethat
hadbeenincorporatedintoShintobutthathadbeenlost.Itisknownthataspirituallineageof
thistypemay endduetothefailureoftheteachertopassiton.Thelineagemaythenresume
hundredsorthousandsofyearslaterwhenamonkorspiritualseekerreceivesinstructionand
empowermentduringamysticalexperience.PerhapsthisiswhathappenedtoUsui.Perhaps
hehadbeenaHealingMasterinapastlifeandthisgavehimthedeterminationtoseekthe
healingpoweragain.Perhapsthelineagehadcometoanendonlytobestartedagainwhen
UsuisReiki wasreactivatedduringhismysticalexperience.

Foundedbypeasantwoman NaoDeguchi(18361918) whoreceivedoraclesfromthe kami
(gods).In1892whenplantingaflowercalledinJapanesemoto,shewaspossessedby akami
who announced:Thisismoto,theGreatFoundationoftheWorld:theteachingsoftheGreat
Beginning,theFirstCause,shallbepreached.Turnedintoanorganizationbyhersoninlaw
nisaburDeguchi.DeniedregistrationasCultShintobecauseofpoliticalstance.Fellinto
declineduringthewar,whennisaburwasconvictedoftreason,butwasrestoredin1946as
Aizenen (GardenofLove),preachingthedivineplanofuniversallove.
SharesmanyofthefeaturesofthepopularBuddhistsectswithitsmessianicmessageofacoming
catastrophe (theBuddhistLatterDayoftheLaw).
Like itspredecessorTenriky,itproclaimsitsheadquartersin Ayabe,thecentreoftheworld.

MAHIKARI(,TrueLightOrganization)
Thefounderof Mahikari,amannamed YoshikazuOkada(19011974),hadbeen amemberof
SekaiKyseiKy beforereceivinghisown revelationsin1959,whichhavebeencollectedinto
ascripturecalled GoSeigen.
SKYMAHIKARI (,TrueLightSupraReligiousOrganization)
foundedby KtamaOkadain1959.YoshikazuOkada,whochangedhisnametoKtama
(JewelofLight)afteravisionhadoriginallybeenamemberofthe SekaiKyseiKy.The
TrueLightreligionemphasisehealingthroughtheexorcismofevilspirits.Itsmembersperform
miraclessuchashealingdiseaseandraisingdeadgoldfishtolife.Theyclaimtohavebeen
builtonChristianitybutsupersededit.JesusdidnotdiebutcametoJapan.(Infact,heisburied
withhisbrother,James,intheAomorivillageofShingo!)In1973Okadasoughtanaudience
withthePopeinRomeandafterwardsclaimedthatthePopehadapprovedhisorganization.
ThetwosectsMahikariand SkyMahikaribothpracticeanearlyidenticalformofhealing
called okiyome,inwhichGodsLight(jrei)isfocusedthroughapendantwornbythe
practitionercalledthe omitama.
PerhapsitshouldbenotedthatMokichiOkadaandYoshikazu(Ktama)Okadaarenotrelated.

KOTODAMA:MORECOINCIDENCESANDANUSUICONNECTION
Thepracticeof kotodama(theSpiritoftheWord)istorepeatthesacredsyllablesandintone
them.Thepowerofthewordspiritresonatesinthevocalcordsandvibratestheair,spirit,
heart,andmindofthepersondirectly.
Thehistoryofthepracticeof kotodamaisnotentirelyclear.Somescholarsindicateitisfrom
Shintoorigins,whileotherstraceaShingonBuddhistpath.Mostlikelyitissomecombinationof
both,asthetworeligions,ideologies,andpracticeswereinterwoventhroughhistoryinJapan.
KotodamaiscommonlyusedinShintoandNeoShintoritesandrituals.Italsooccursin moto
kyandAikid. ItisinterestingtonotethatUsuiissaidtohavebeenaShingonBuddhistwhile
growingup.
ItissaidthatUsuitaughtkotodamaasaspiritualpracticeatlevelII(Okuden)in Reiki.Whatis
particularlyfascinatingistheinterconnectionofthispracticetomanyofthehealingpracticesthat
weredevelopingatthetimethatUsuioriginatedReiki.
MoriheiUeshibawasthefounderofAikid,andheincorporated kotodamaintohisAikid.Itis
saidthathelearnedthepracticein1919from nisaburDeguchiwhodevelopedtheartof
motokyandthenwentontostudythepracticeinShingonBuddhism.Deguchiwas
consideredbysometobetheleading kotodamamasterinthecountryatthattime.Ueshibawasa
followerof motokyuntilhisdeathin1969.
Anotherconnectionto motokyoccursinthereligionofJohrei.motokywasstudiedby
MokichiOkada(Meishusama)whodeveloped SekaiKyseiKy,betterknownasMOA

Sowhatwehavehereisaninterestingconcurrenceofinterconnectedcircumstances:

Thus,UsuiwasastudentofDeguchi(motoky/kotodama)andTanaka(DaiReiD),and
wasalsocontemporywithMoriheiUeshiba(Aikid),MokichiOkada(SekaiKyseiKy),and
YoshikazuOkada(Mahikari).Noticingthenames,itisalsointerestingtonotethatthemanwho
erectedtheUsuimemorialathisgravesiteinTokyowasnamedMasayukiOkada.Itisunclear
howorifanyoftheseOkadaswerecloselyrelated.Whatiscertain,however,isthestrong
connectionwith kotodama andShinto.
II.AnIntroductiontoAmaterasu

WhoIsAmaterasu?
TheGreatSunGoddessofJapan,sheisthesupremedeityoftheShinto
religionandisrulerofallthekami,thegods,or,moreproperly,the
forcesinherentinnature.SheistheGreatShiningLight that
illuminatestheheavensandearth.HerspecialsacredsiteistheGrand
ShrineofIse,wheresheisenshrinedintheInnerSanctuary(shownat
right belowright:thestepsleadingtotheoutergateoftheinner
sanctuary,in which theGreatBrightLightisenshrined.)
InthemythologyofJapan,accordingtotheeighthcentury
Kojiki(RecordsofAncientMatters),inthebeginningtherewas
chaos,andyinandyang,theheavensandtheearth,thewaters
andthelandwerenotseparated.Heavenformedfirst,andthen
earth,andnumerousgodswerebornwhoremainedhidden.Then
areedshootroseupfrombetweenheavenandearth,andit
transformedintothefirstgod,KunitokotachinoMikoto
(EarthlyEternallyStandingAugustDeity).NexttheEightDivinePillarswereborn,and
lasttwobeingIzanagi(HeWhoInvites)andIzanami(SheWhoInvites).Shegavebirthto
several kami,butwhendeliveringthegodoffire(Kagutsuchi),shedied.Izanagigrieved,and
followedhertothenetherworld(Yominokuni).Hebeggedhertoreturntotheworldofthe
livingwithhim,andshelefttoprepareforthejourney,admonishinghimnottolookather
untiltheywereback.LikeOrpheus,however,helooked,andsawherputrefyingflesh
swarmingwithmaggots.Heranawayandeventually
returnedtothisworld,whereheimmediatelybathed
himselftowashawaythedefilement.Whenhewashedhis
lefteye,Amaterasumikami (HeavenIlluminating
GreatAugustDeity),goddessofthesun,wasbornwhen
hewashedhisrighteye,TsukiyominoMikoto(His
AugustnessBowlikeMoon),godofthemoon,wasborn
andwhenhewashedhisnose,hesneezed,which
producedTakehayaSusanoonoMikoto(HisBrave
IsuzuRiver,inwhichIzanagipurifiedhimself SwiftImpetuousMaleAugustness),thegodofstorms.

AmaterasuruledthePlainofHighHeaven(Takamanohara),Tsukiyomiruledtheseas
andthenightsky,andSusanoruledtheearth,andallgotalongwellforawhile.Butonceina
drunkenrampage,thejealousSusanootrampledAmaterasusricefields,filledinher
irrigationditches,andthrewfecesintoherpalacesandshrines.Amaterasupleadedwithhim
tostopbuthenotonly ignoredherhethenwenton tothrowthecarcassofapartiallyflayed
piebaldhorseintoherweavingroomatwhichherweavingmaidens,startled,leapedup,and,
inChamberlainsquaintrendering,impegeruntprivataspartesadversisradiisetobierunt
impaledtheirprivatepartson thespindlesanddied! (Intheseventhcentury Nihongi
[ChroniclesofJapan],itisAmaterasuherselfwhowoundedherselfonashuttle,butnot
mortally.)Inprotestatthisgreatandevilviolence,Amaterasuwithdrewintoacaveand
sealeditshutwithagiantrock.
Asaresult,theworldwasplungedintodarkness.Withoutherlightandwarmth,thegods
ofriceandalllivingthingsbegantowitheranddie.Theeightmilliongodsgatheredinfront
ofthecaveandtriedtocoax herout,pleadingwithhertoreturn.ButAmaterasuremained
unmoved.
ThenthevoluptuousyounggoddessofmerrimentnamedAmenoUzumeturnedovera
washtub.Standingontopofit,shebeganasensualdance,stampingoutarhythmwith her
feetonthewashtub.Sheeventually exposedherbreastsandliftedherskirts.Heraudience
clappedalong,shoutingandlaughingwithdelight.BehindUzumewashiddenagreatround
mirror.WhenAmaterasupeekedoutofthecavetoseewhatallthecommotionwasabout,
UzumemovedasideandAmaterasustareddirectlyintothegreatmirror.Amaterasu,whohad
neverseenherownbeautybefore,wasdazzledanddelighted.Shewassurprisedatthebright
faceshesaw,andsaidwhiteface,whichisadirecttranslationoftheJapanesephraseomo
shiroi,whichreallymeansinteresting,fascinating.Justthen,Tajikarao(HeofPowerful
Arms)rolledbackthestone.Amaterasureturnedtoherheavenlythronetowarmthewinter
wearyearth.Allthekamirejoicedinherdivinewarmthandlight.Lifestirredandtheworld
turngreenonceagain.

Theroyalfamily ofJapantracesitsdescentfromAmaterasu.Shesenthergrandson,Ninigi
noMikoto,topacifytheJapaneseislands,havinggivenhimthesacredmirror,sword, and
jewel (magatama)thatbecametheImperialRegalia.Hisgreatgrandsonbecamethefirst
EmperorJimmu.Animportantpartof eachemperorscoronationceremonytakesplaceat
AmaterasusmaintempleatIse,whichhousesthesacredmirror.Thismirrorishergoshintai,
theobjectintowhichtheGoddesssspiritenterstobepresentatceremoniesandtolistento
theprayersaddressedtoher.

1.CleansingExercise.Cleansetheethericbodybydoingsimplephysicalexercisesfor
aboutfivetotenminutes.Duringtheexercise,lightgrayishmatter,orusedupprana,is
expelledfromtheethericbody.Physicalexercisesalsominimizepossiblepraniccongestion
sincetheMeditationgeneratesalotofsubtleenergiesinthebody.
2.InvokeforDivineBlessings.TheInvocationisimportanttoone'sprotection,helpand
guidance.Withouttheinvocation,thepracticeofanyadvancedmeditationaltechniquecanbe
dangerous.
3.ActivatingtheHeartChakra. Pressthecenterofyourchest(heartarea)withyourfinger
forafewseconds.Thenconcentrateonthefrontheartchakraandblessthewholeworldwith
lovingkindness.Theblessingshouldnotbedonemechanically.Whenblessingtheentire
earth,visualizeitasasmallballinfrontofyou,beingfilledwithdazzlingbluishpinklight.
DuringtheblessingwiththeprayerbasedonthatofthePrayerofSt.FrancisofAssisi (see
below),visualizepeoplesmilingandfilledwithjoy,faith,hope,andpeace.Visualizeenemies
reconciling,embracingandforgivingeachother.Youshouldalsopersonallyfeeljoy,
happiness,andpeacefillingyourentirebeingwhileblessingtheearth.Donotdirectthis
blessingtoinfants,childrenorindividualsbecausetheymightbeoverwhelmedbytheintense
energygeneratedbythismeditation.
4.ActivatingtheCrownChakra.Pressthetopofyourheadforafewseconds.Thenbless
theplanetearthwithlovingkindnessfromtheCrownchakra.Feelthesamepositiveenergies
youevokedinstep3.VisualizebrilliantwhitelightfromyourCrownchakrablessingthe

theThreeTreasures(Mirror,sword,jewel)thecircularmirror,symbolizingcontinuity
andendlessduration,toshowDivinityinyourreflection thesword, symbolizingcourageand
strength, tocutawaydelusion.andthejewel,representingthehiddentreasuresofknowledge,
truth,compassion,andwisdom,tobecomeaWishfulfillingGem.

fromwhich springthreeraysofwhitelight..In her
righthand,sheholdsaswordandinherleft,a
mirror.They willlaterbecometwoofthethree
treasurescomprisingtheImperialRegalia.Thethird,
amagatamajewel,ispresumedtobethediademona
chainatherneck.ShestandsintheHighPlainof
Heaven,andbehindherisaredsundisc,representing

Atleftisaprayercard(ofuda)fromtheGrandShrineofIse.Normally,
onewouldpurchasethisduringavisittoIse,andthenenshrineitwithin
thekamidana, orfamilyShintoaltarkeptinthehome.Itwouldserveasa
goshintai,orembodimentofthedeity,sothatwhenoneprayedtoit,one
wouldreallybeprayingtothegoddess,whowouldindeedheartheprayers
ofpraise.(InShinto,thereareveryseldomprayersofsupplication,but
peopleoftenprayforhealth,wealth,andhappiness.)
AlthoughtheusualwaytoreadthisinmodernJapanesewouldbe
TenshKodaijinguitisextremelydifficulttoreadthisofuda correctly
ortranslatewithoutreadingthethreecentralcharacterstwice,and
assigningtothemdifferentmeanings.Thus,theinscriptioncanberead:

This interesting modern rendition of Amaterasu shows two suns

behind her, the golden daytime orb, and the seemingly larger rising
(orsetting)sun.Thetwobirdsarecranes,symbolsoflongevity(asis

symbolize the rays of the sun. The shamanic nature of the painting
almostmakesitlookNativeAmercian.

 Here, the goddess Amaterasu looks at her
reflection in a mirror. This modern work evokes
the story of her having secluded herself in the
Cave of Heaven, later to peak out and see her
own reflection in a mirror. The upper righthand

heractualmanifestationinourworld.

The official name of Naig, the Inner Sanctuary of the Grand Shrine of Ise, is
Kdaijing (its roof is shown at right). The main deity is Amaterasu Omikami, the
ancestor of the Imperial Family and the tutelary kami of the Japanese people. The
Naig was founded about 2000 years ago. Worship of Amaterasu mikami was
conductedbythefirsttenEmperorswithintheImperialPalaceinYamato.Attheage
of Emperor Sujin the country was struck by severe epidemics and numerous other
disasters. Therefore, the Emperor gave Princess Toyosukiirihimenomikoto an
order to remove Amaterasu mikami from the Imperial Palace and worship her at
anotherplace.Consequently,Amaterasumikamiwasenshrinedatalocationinthe
easternNaraBasin.
Next emperor Suinin gave Princess Yamatohimenomikoto an order to find the
most suitable permanent location to hold ceremonies for Amaterasu mikami. The
princessleftYamato,arrivingfinallyatIseafterhavingwanderedthroughtheregions
ofmiandMino.AtIse,sheheardthevoiceofAmaterasumikami,saying"Iwish
to live forever here in Ise, where the wind of the kami blows, and the country is
blessed with the rich resources of the mountains and the sea." Yamatohimeno
mikoto decided to build a magnificent sanctuary at Ise to hold ceremonies for
Amaterasu mikami forever. This was the beginning of the Naig. Ever since, for
over 2,000 years, Amaterasu mikami has been worshipedin Ise bythe Japanese
peopleandtheEmperor,inceremoniesledbytheshrinesShintopriests.

The Great Goddess Spirit Shining in Heaven,

this Japanese Sun Goddess ruled weaving and
agriculture.Disgustedwithherbrotherbecause
of his violence toward women, Amaterasu
enclosedherselfinacaveandrefusedtocome
out.Eighthundreddeitiesgatheredoutsideher
selfmade isolation and tried to lure her out
with a loud celebration. Hearing the loud
commentaries on an erotic dance being
performed by the crone Goddess Ame No
Uzume, Amaterasu emerged, overcome with
curiosity. Seeing her radiance reflected in a
mirror that had been set up outside the
entrance, she was amazed at her brilliance
whichshehadneverseenbefore.Shereturned
totheworldand lifewasrenewed.Thesnake,
draped on her arm, holds her brother's sword
which she broke into 3 pieces that became

emperorsroleasadefenderandAmaterasusroleasanationalguardian.Thelastregaliaisoneof
thejademagatamajewelsthattheothergodsandgoddessesusedtolureAmaterasuoutofhercave.
Thejewelarecharacterizedbygentlenessandyieldingandisthesourceofcompassion.Wornover
thesoulspotonthechest,oratthethroat,itgivesthewearersvoiceresonanceandpower.

Intentionisthekey,soitisimportanttohaveaclearintentionofwhatistobeaccomplished.
Be centered and calm, focused and relaxed. At this point, connect with Amaterasu and feel
hertransmittingherbrightgolden energytoyourheart.ThinkingaboutAmaterasusimage,or
chanting her seed syllable (bija)oroneof her prayers, either out loudor silently, orsimply
sayingIherebychanneltheAmaterasuenergynow,workverywell.Noticethisenergyin
theheart andfeelfullofcompassionafteryoucan feelitsconnectiontothehands, youare
readytobegin.

BeforeMisogi
Themindandbodyshouldbeconditionedbeforemisogi.Onthenightbefore,itisrecommendedthat
