Introduction

What Is in This Manual?

This manual describes the following PetroWorks Project Management

tools:

Curve Alias List Manager (page 6) allows you to maintain and

manipulate curve alias lists. Curve aliasing allows you to link
equivalent curve names to a common or standard alias. In this way,
when you specify an alias curve name, you get information related
to the curve name and all the curve names aliased to it (i.e., all that
are equivalent).

Preferences (page 37) allows you to control which project

stratigraphic column is used to for displaying surfaces and units in
dialog boxes in PetroWorks applications.

To access this manual online, select Help > Online Manual from the
PetroWorks Pro, PetroWorks Asset, or LogEdit Command Menu.

Curve Alias List Manager

Overview

Large petrophysical projects can contain hundreds or thousands of

wells and dozens or hundreds of log curves per well. In these cases,
data management can be even more challenging than petrophysical
interpretation.

Curve Alias List Manager allows you to maintain and manipulate curve
alias lists. Curve aliasing allows you to link equivalent curve names to
a common or standard alias. In this way, when you specify an alias
curve name, you get information related to the curve name and all the
curve names aliased to it (i.e., all that are equivalent). For example, you
can name a curve alias list Gamma_Ray and then, within that list, name
all the specific GR-related curves in the order you want the curves
processed. The second curve is processed if the first curve in the list is
not present, the third if the first and second are not present, and so on.

Curve Alias List Manager is designed so that project managers set up

default curve alias lists for interpreters to use. This means that
interpreters do not have to deal with all the curve name variations ever
loaded or created, just the standard names to which the curves have
been aliased. Many interpreters will never need to use the Curve Alias
List Manager utility. Other interpreters may need to copy and modify
default curve alias lists for advanced interpretation.

All OpenWorks Curve Dictionary curves and any curves you generate
in PetroWorks can be members of curve alias lists. Landmark supplies
48 modifiable curve alias lists to get you started.

The Curve Alias List Manager replaces the aliasing capability in

previous releases of Curve Dictionary. The OpenWorks Curve
Dictionary allows you to maintain and manipulate curves in an
OpenWorks project database. Please refer to the Curve Dictionary
documentation in the OpenWorks Data Management, Vol. 1 manual for
a thorough description of the Curve Dictionary and for detailed
procedures regarding its use. You may also launch Curve Alias List
Manager from Data > Management > Curve Dictionary > Options in
the OpenWorks Command Menu.

Alias List Box Elements

In addition to alias list names, other elements may appear in the Alias
List list box. Graphical indicators to the left of entries show which list
entries have been modified within the current session. To the right of
each alias list name entry are the source of the alias list name (either
blank [for default] or interpreter initials) and an optional annotation
indicating any action pending within the current session. Which
additional elements appear depend on the modifications you make and
what your status (manager/interpreter) is. Element positioning and
definitions are shown below.

Understanding Manager/Interpreter Options

The actions you can take in Curve Alias List Manager depend on your
project statusmanager or interpreter. On the basis of your status, the
utility greys out (deactivates) the options unavailable to you.

Restricting some actions (such as the creation of new default curve

aliases to project managers) reduces the proliferation of redundant
curve aliases, keeps the default alias curve list to a manageable size,
and increases the likelihood that curve aliases are named consistently
and meaningfully. Interpreters can always copy existing default curve
aliases and modify them for specific interpretation needs, but most
interpreters should find the default curve aliases created by project
managers adequate.

The following table contains a summary of these options.

R2003.12.1 Understanding Manager/Interpreter Options: Curve Alias List Manager 12

Landmark Graphics Corporation PetroWorks Project Management

Finding a Curve Alias List

You can find a curve alias list in three ways:

scrolling up and down the list box

using your keyboards up and down arrow keys

typing a text string and using the Find/Next button to search for
occurrences of that string.

The search is case sensitive.

For example, if you type Res and repeatedly click on the Find/
Next button, the following alias list entries are highlighted one at a
time (assuming you have not modified the Landmark-supplied
default list):

Dielectric_Resistivity_Hi
Dielectric_Resistivity_Lo
Flushed_Zone_Resistivity
Formation_Resistivity
High_Res_Shale_Indicator
True_Resistivity

Note that the string can occur anywhere in the name. In this way
you can quickly locate aliases and scan their member mnemonics.

R2003.12.1 Curve Alias List Manager: Finding a Curve Alias List 13

Landmark PetroWorks / LogEdit Utilities

Copying a Curve Alias List

Interpreters can copy default curve alias lists and those of other
interpreters. Interpreters cannot make copies of their own curve aliases.
To see other interpreters aliases, you must toggle on the View See
Other Interpreters Aliases option.

Copied alias lists are interpreter specific; members can be added,

deleted, and reordered to meet individual interpreters needs. Copies
are pending until you choose the File > Save option.

To copy a curve alias list

1. Select the Alias List entry you want to copy.

2. From the top menu bar, select Edit > Copy Selected Alias.

The Alias List entry changes to reflect the modification:

plus (+) symbol appears in the indicator column of the Alias

lists text box

your interpreter initials appear after the entry

[new, unsaved] appears in the annotation column of the Alias

lists text box

The Alias List Members (Curve Mnemonics) list box entries

become activated so you can modify the list. (See Modifying a
Curve Alias List on page 15).

If you have no other changes to make in Curve Alias List Manager,

choose File > Save to commit any pending changes to the database.
The Status area updates to show the changes.

To cancel all pending changes, select File > Exit and choose Exit when
the warning dialog box appears.

Landmark Graphics Corporation PetroWorks Project Management

Modifying a Curve Alias List

If you own a curve alias list or have manager status, you can modify the
curve by adding, removing, and reordering its members. All
modifications are pending until you choose the File > Save option.

To prevent the accidental modification of default aliases, the Options >

Allow Editing of Default Aliases option is toggled off at the start of
each session. Managers who want to modify default aliases must toggle
on this option.

Reordering Members
The members of a Curve Alias List appear in the order in which they
will be processed by any application that uses the curve alias. If the first
curve in the list is not present, the second one is used; if the first and
second curves are not present, the third is used; and so on.

To change the priority of a member of a curve alias list

1. Click on the member entry to select it (or use your keyboards up

and down arrow keys to move to that name).

2. Click on the Relative Priority Up arrow button to move the entry

up one level. Click on the Relative Priority Down arrow button to
move the entry down one level. The change is pending until you
save the session.

If the list you are reordering is new, the annotation for the Curve
Alias will not change. If the list existed before the current session,
the Curve Alias entry changes to reflect the modification:

asterisk (*) symbol appears in the indicator column of the Alias

lists text box

[modified, unsaved] appears in the annotation column of the

Alias lists text box

Removing Members
To delete a member of a curve alias list

1. Click on the member entry to select it (or use your keyboards up

and down arrow keys to move to that name).

2. Click on the Remove button.

The member name is immediately removed from the display, but

the change is pending until you save the session.

Adding Members
You can add any Curve Mnemonics list name to a Curve Alias List if
you own the list. The Curve Alias List Manager utility does not check
to see if the added curve is a logical choice for that list. You can add
members to an Alias List Members list in either of the two ways
described below.

Adding a Member by Typing the Name

If you know the name of the curve as it appears in the Curve
Mnemonics List, you can type the name in the text box. The typed
value must exactly match the mnemonic in the Curve Dictionary. If it
does not, the Status area will alert you with the message Inserted
value must be an existing curve mnemonic. You can
open the Curve Mnemonics window to check a name, but then you will
not be able type the name in the box. However, you can click on the
Curve Mnemonics List entry to automatically add the name to the
Curve Alias list.

If you select an existing member mnemonic before adding a new one,

the new one will appear directly below the one you selected. Otherwise,

R2003.12.1 Modifying a Curve Alias List: Curve Alias List Manager 16

the new curve is appended to the bottom of the list. Use the Relative
Priority buttons to put it in priority order.

Adding a Member via the Curve Mnemonics List

Click on the Curve Mnemonics List button to open the Curve
Mnemonics list window and click on the curve you wish to add to the
Alias List Members list. The curve is automatically added to the
member list. See Using the Curve Mnemonics List on page 18 for
details on using the Curve Mnemonics List window.

If you select an existing member mnemonic before adding a new one,

the new one will appear directly below the one you selected. Otherwise,
the new curve is appended to the bottom of the list. Use the Relative
Priority buttons to put it in priority order.

If you have no other changes to make in Curve Alias List Manager,

choose File > Save to commit any pending changes to the database.
The Status area updates to show the changes.

To cancel all pending changes, select File > Exit and choose Exit when
the warning dialog box appears.

Using the Curve Mnemonics List

The Curve Mnemonics list contains the same mnemonics provided in

the OpenWorks Curve Dictionary. You must choose curve alias list
members from this list. The list is available only after you select an
alias that you own and thus can modify. The list disappears when you
select a curve alias that you do not own. You can filter items in the
Curve Mnemonics list by

appended to the Alias List Members. If you select an existing member
mnemonic before adding a new one from the Curve Mnemonic list, the
new one appears directly below the one you selected. Otherwise, the
new curve is appended to the bottom of the Alias Members list.

Filtering by Name
If you know part of a curve mnemonic or if you want to see all the
mnemonics that contain certain characters, you can filter the list by
name.

To filter by Name

1. Type the character string you are filtering on. For example, you
may want to find all the mnemonics containing the string VSH.

2. Toggle on the By Name toggle button.

The list updates to show only those curve mnemonics containing

the string VSH.

Filtering by Measurement Unit Type

You may wish to locate only those curves that are of a certain
measurement unit type.

To filter by Measurement Unit Type

1. Select the measurement unit type from the pulldown menu.

The pulldown menu contains a list of measurement unit types for

log data.

2. Toggle on the By Measurement Unit Type button.

Landmark PetroWorks / LogEdit Utilities

Creating a Curve Alias List

Managers can modify all Landmark-supplied alias lists and can create
new default aliases. Interpreters can copy default aliases and modify
them to suit still more specific needs.

Landmark Supplies Sample Default Curve Alias Lists

Prior to any modifications by managers or interpreters the Alias Lists box contains
48 Landmark-supplied default curve alias lists (see the table at the end of this
chapter for a listing). These default curve alias lists and their members are suggested
aliases; your project manager should set up aliases and member lists that meet your
specific project needs. However, if interpreters find that they need to modify a large
number of default alias lists, they and their managers should consider whether the
default alias lists should be modified.

New default aliases are pending until you choose the File Save
option.

To create a curve alias list

1. Select Edit > New Default Alias... from the top menu bar. The
following dialog box appears.

2. Type the name of the new default alias.

To be consistent with the Landmark-supplied default Curve Alias

names, you should follow naming conventions that attempt to
describe the essential measurement that the curve alias members
are associated with, e.g., Porosity. Alternatively, you might name a
curve alias that describes members by function, e.g.,
High_Res_Shale_Indicator.

R2003.12.1 Creating a Curve Alias List: Curve Alias List Manager 22

3. Click on OK to add the new default alias (or click on Cancel).

The Alias List entry changes to reflect the modification:

plus (+) symbol appears in the indicator column of the Alias

lists text box

[new, unsaved] appears in the annotation column of the Alias

lists text box

4. Add Alias List Members (Curve Mnemonics) list box entries.

If you have no other changes to make in Curve Alias List Manager,

choose File > Save to commit any pending changes to the database.
The Status area updates to show the changes.

To cancel all pending changes, select File > Exit and choose Exit when
the warning dialog box appears.

Selecting by Curve Alias in Applications...

When you select by curve alias (rather than by curve details or curve name) in
applications, only alias lists owned by the first interpreter in your petrophysics
source priority list are accessed. If that interpreter does not have alias lists, the
projects default alias list is used.

Landmark PetroWorks / LogEdit Utilities

Deleting a Curve Alias List

Interpreters can delete only their own curve alias lists; they cannot
delete default curve alias lists or curve alias lists created by other
interpreters. Managers can delete default curve alias lists if the Allow
Editing of Default Aliases option is toggled on.

Before you can delete an alias, you must mark it for deletion. All
marked entries are pending until you choose the File > Save option.

To mark a curve alias list for deletion

1. Select the Alias List entry you want to delete.

2. Choose Edit > Delete Selected Alias from the top menu bar. If the
option is greyed out, you do not have permission to delete the alias
list entry.

The Alias List entry changes to reflect the modification:

Alias lists text box if the alias existed prior to the current
session

[new, wont be saved] appears in the annotation column of the

Alias lists text box if you added the alias during the current
session

If you have no other changes to make in Curve Alias List Manager,

choose File > Save to commit the pending changes to the database. The
Status area updates to show the changes.

To cancel all pending changes, select File > Exit and choose Exit when

Saving a Curve Alias List Manager Session

All changes made during a Curve Alias List Manager session are
pending until you actually perform a save. Once you select File > Save,
however, all changes are immediately written to the OpenWorks
databaseyou have no chance to cancel the Save. If the Save option is
greyed out, you have not made any modifications during the current
session.

Importing and Exporting Curve Alias Lists

You may want to import or export your curve alias list names in order
to move aliases between projects. Managers can import and export
formatted ASCII files for this purpose. Interpreters and limited
interpreters can only export their own aliases. Browsers cannot export
or import.

Importing Formatted ASCII Files

You can replace, augment, or override the default alias list when
importing another alias list. Imported lists do not affect interpreters
alias lists.

To ensure that aliases follow the naming conventions established for a

project, only managers can import aliases from ASCII files. ASCII files
must be formatted as follows:

all comment lines must begin with two hyphens

all curve alias lines must be of the format

curve_alias_name|member|member|member

for example,

Acoustic_Wave_Travel_Time|DT|AC|DTC|DTCO

The required field curve_alias_name should follow naming

conventions that attempt to describe the essential measurement that the
curve alias members are associated with, e.g., Porosity.
Alternatively, you might name a curve alias that describes members by
function, e.g., High_Res_Shale_Indicator.

Alias names and member names need not be entries in the current
Curve Dictionary, but each name must be 25 characters or less.

See the sample export file below (page 30) for an example of a
formatted ASCII file.

PetroWorks Preferences

Overview

Defining PetroWorks Preferences

Preferences allows you to control which project stratigraphic column is
used to for displaying surfaces and stratigraphic units in dialog boxes in
PetroWorks applications for the session. Choose the stratigraphic
framework you want to reference by selecting Session > Preferences.

The Surface / Unit tab displays a list of all the stratigraphic columns
available for the project. Select the one you want to use and click on the
Apply button. This preference remains in effect from session to
sessionon a one-project, one-interpreter basisuntil you change it.

Using Surface Aliasing

Multiple surfaces may be aliased to a common surface name. For
example, you can alias multiple spelling variations of the same surface
name or multiple surface names that relate to the same stratigraphic
horizon as a single horizon.

To view stratigraphic columns, create a new column, or set up surface

aliasing use Utilities > Strat Column Editor. For more information,
refer to the StratWorks manual Setting Up StratWorks, Creating
Stratigraphic Columns.

To use surface aliasing, select the StratWorks Session > Preferences

option. For more information, refer to the StratWorks manual
Introduction to StratWorks, Setting StratWorks Global Preferences.
