2 Power Source
The power source for a base station may be the mains supply, diesel generator, solar sub-array,
wind turbine, and batteries.
Huawei provides the following power sources:
l Mains supply
l Diesel generator
l Diesel generator and battery hybrid power sources
l Solar and wind hybrid power sources
l Solar and diesel generator hybrid power sources
These sources provide a reliable power supply even without a mains supply. Figure 2-1, Figure
2-2, Figure 2-3, and Figure 2-4 show the base station power sources.
NOTE
The intelligent-hybrid power supply system (IPS1000) provides various functions, such as battery
monitoring management, power switchover, and power monitoring.
NOTE
PV refers to photovoltaic.
NOTE
l The automatic transfer switch (ATS) automatically starts and stops the diesel generator, switches AC
power between the mains supply and the diesel generator, and provides surge protection.
l PV refers to photovoltaic.
Each base station has a power supply system, which converts and distributes power and manages
power-related alarms and batteries.
The power supply system consists of the power monitoring unit (PMU), power supply units
(PSUs), and storage batteries. The functions of the PMU and PSUs are as follows:
l The PMU manages the power supply, monitors power distribution, and reports alarms.
l The PSUs convert voltages, monitors and reports alarms related to PSU faults.
Huawei AC-powered base stations support data configuration, information query, and software
management for the PMU, PSUs, and storage batteries. In addition, they can also provide the
following functions based on configurations:
Intelligent Battery Management includes the following functions: automatic switching between
different charge-and-discharge modes, self-protection under high temperature, and battery
runtime display. These functions help protect storage batteries and prolong the battery lifespan,
thereby reducing the OPEX of operators.
l APM30H (Ver.C)
l APM30H (Ver.D)
l BTS3900AL (Ver.A)
l TP48600A-H17B1
With this function, the base station calculates the number of times the mains supply is cut off
and the duration of each instance over the past 15 days. Then, it determines the grid type and
activates the corresponding charge-and-discharge mode for batteries. Table 3-1 provides details
about charge-and-discharge modes.
NOTE
In Table 3-1, the current limitation valve is the current coefficient used when batteries are being charged.
A battery has the following two charge states:
l Float charging: A state in which batteries are consistently charged at a constant voltage over a long
period. This state compensates for self-discharge to ensure that the batteries are fully charged whenever
they are idle or being used lightly.
l Equalized charging: A state in which batteries can be fully charged at a higher voltage than normal
within a short period. This state ensures that all the batteries are equally charged.
With self-protection under high temperature, a base station performs any of the following
operations based on the site conditions:
NOTICE
l If batteries enter the float charging state or a base station lowers the battery charging voltage
under high temperature, the batteries may not be fully charged and therefore the time the
base station continues providing services after a mains supply cutoff is shortened.
l If the batteries are disconnected under high temperature, the base station has no backup
power. Then, services on the base station will be interrupted if the base station uses the
alternating current (AC) power input and the mains supply is cut off.
This function provides different solutions to prevent battery overuse and damage under different
temperatures, as shown in Figure 3-1.
The preceding figure assumes that the default configurations of the base station are in effect.
l If the battery temperature exceeds the threshold for entering the float charging state and
remains above the threshold for 5 minutes, batteries enter the float charging state and no
alarms are generated. This threshold equals to the value of the TUTHD parameter minus
5.
l If the battery temperature remains higher than the value of TUTHD for 5 minutes,
ALM-25654 Battery Temperature Unacceptable alarm is generated.
l If the battery temperature remains higher than the value of SDT for 5 minutes, the base
station performs either of the following operations based on the value of the HTSDF
parameter:
Disconnects the batteries if HTSDF is set to ENABLE.
Lowers the battery charging voltage if HTSDF is set to DISABLE.
The TUTHD, SDT, and HTSDF parameters apply to GBTS, eGBTS, NodeB, and eNodeB.
language (MML) command. With the battery runtime, users can prepare a generator in advance
to prevent service interruption and improve system reliability.
With this function, a base station uses the following formula to calculate the battery runtime
when the mains supply is cut off:
Battery runtime = (Remaining power capacity x Total power capacity x Discharge efficiency)/
(Mean discharge current x Aging coefficient)
Users can query the battery runtime by running the following MML commands:
l GBTS: DSP BTSBATCAP
l eGBTS/NodeB/eNodeB: DSP BATTERY
NOTE
The discharge efficiency is negatively correlated to the mean discharge current, and the aging coefficient
is positively correlated to the time batteries have been in use.
The calculated battery runtime may be inaccurate due to inaccurate calculation of the remaining power
capacity and discharge current. The maximum tolerance of the battery runtime ranges from 10% to 20%
when batteries are fully charged.
l Scheduled automatic test: A standard automatic battery test is started at a specified interval.
l Power-off automatic test: A standard automatic battery test is started when AC power fails.
l Scheduled and power-off automatic test: A standard automatic battery test is started at a
specified interval or when AC power fails.
The principles for reporting and clearing this alarm are as follows:
The LVSDF and SDV parameters apply to GBTS, eGBTS, NodeB, and eNodeB.
The HTSDF and SDT parameters apply to GBTS, eGBTS, NodeB, and eNodeB.
If HTSDF is set to DISABLE and the battery temperature remains above the SDT value for 5
minutes, the base station lowers the battery charging voltage and instructs the batteries to enter
the high-temperature protection state.
The LSDF and LSDV parameters apply to GBTS, eGBTS, NodeB, and eNodeB.
NOTE
In a base station, the baseband unit (BBU) and transmission equipment are the primary load, and radio
frequency (RF) units are the secondary load.
This function is supported by GSM-, UMTS-, and LTE-mode base stations. Of the GSM-mode
base stations, only the eGBTS supports this function.
If the ICF parameter is set to ENABLE, the diesel generator works efficiently under the control
of the PMU. This function is supported by all GSM-, UMTS-, and LTE-mode base stations.
4 Related Features
Power supply management does not depend on or affect other features, and is not mutually
exclusive with or affected by other features.
5 Network Impact
The storage batteries and diesel generators can be configured based on requirements.

7.7 Troubleshooting
Table 7-13 lists the alarms associated with the power supply. If an alarm is reported, clear the
alarm with recommended actions in alarm reference of the BSC.
The deployment of power supply management for the eGBTS, NodeB, or eNodeB in a co-MPT
base station is the same as that for the single-mode eGBTS, NodeB, or eNodeB described in 6
Engineering Guidelines (eGBTS/NodeB/eNodeB).
For the separate-MPT multimode base stations, data related to power supply management can
be configured either for only one mode or in a mode-by-mode manner. Configuration for only
one mode is recommended.
NOTE
Configuration for only one mode has been available since SRAN6.0. Versions earlier than SRAN6.0
support only mode-by-mode configuration.
In configuration for only one mode, data needs to be configured only for the radio access
technology (RAT) that manages the PMU.
Mode-by-mode configuration does not require a configuration sequence. You only need to
follow the instructions in 7 Engineering Guidelines (GBTS) and 6 Engineering Guidelines
(eGBTS/NodeB/eNodeB) to perform the configurations for both RATs and ensure the
consistency of some specific parameters between RATs. Table 8-1 lists the parameters of which
the settings must be consistent between RATs.

Default Value:3
BT2_DISABLE
:ON
to INNER. The
reasons are as
follows: In an
APM30 of
version 301 or
302, the battery
temperature
sensor is
connected to
different ports
on the APMI
board by the
battery
temperature
sensor cable,
depending on
the installation
type of lead-acid
battery. When
the installation
type is INNER,
the battery
temperature
sensor is
connected to the
BAT_TEM1
port. When the
installation type
is OUTER, the
battery
temperature
sensor is
connected to the
BAT_TEM2
port. The
configuration
data on the
maintenance
console must be
set based on the
actual
installation,
enabling the
PMU to select
the correct port
for battery
temperature
management. In
power cabinets
other than
APM30s of
versions 301 and
302, the battery
temperature is
reported to the
PMU through
the RS485 bus.
Under this
circumstance,
the PMU can
always select the
correct battery
temperature for
temperature
management.
This parameter
is set to INNER
to avoid a
configuration
conflict between
different modes
of a multi-mode
base station.
