Book: Insurgent
Author: Veronica Roth
Adversary
In the book, the main antagonist of the story is Jeanine. She is the head of the Erudite faction. In
Insurgent, she is trying to create a way to get rid of the whole population of the divergent. The divergent
are people who when taking a personality based test when they are sixteen, to determine which faction
they would be in (Amity, Abnegation, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite), test in more than one faction. For
example, Tris tests in Dauntless (the brave faction), Erudite (the intelligent faction), and Abnegation (the
selfless faction). Since she has tested in three different factions she is considered divergent. Jeanine is not
okay with the fact that these people are not part of the well constructed and organized system of factions,
so she takes it into her own hands to get rid of them in all the wrong ways.

Bravery
Throughout the entire book bravery is a big theme. For example, the faction Dauntless is built on bravery.
They go jumping on and off of trains, ziplining on a rooftop, and other crazy things. Another example of
bravery is Tris. Throughout the entire Divergent series she has had to grow into a brave young woman. In
the book, she has had to fight for what she believes is right, which can definitely take a profuse amount of
courage.

Candor
Candor is one of five factions in the Insurgent universe. It is the faction of honesty and truth. In this
faction the main, and only, colors that they wear are black and white. In the factions because of the way
they are organized, each faction has a certain color or colors that they wear. Dauntless is black,
Abnegation is gray, Amity is red and yellow, and Erudite is blue. Something else about Candor is that is
was formed by those who blamed duplicity and deception and who believed that dishonesty is the key fault in
human nature which began evil and war. This is where their moral of honesty came from for the faction.

Dauntless
Dauntless is the brave faction. It is the faction that focuses on their strength and bravery. They're the
protectors, the soldiers, and the police of the whole world of the Divergent series. This is the faction that Tris
picks at the Choosing Ceremony. This is also the main faction that fights to take down Jeanine with Tris
throughout the book. Also, the Dauntless are relied on by the other factions for their strength and protection.
The Dauntless can also be thought of as crazy because of the way they act the majority of the time.

Erudite
This is the faction of intelligence. They can be known as know-it-alls because of the way they are
constantly going around and blurting knowledge about everything. They are also not afraid to correct
someone if theyre wrong. The head of the Erudite is Jeanine. She ends up getting a majority of the
Erudite to do some of her work for her when attempting to get rid of all the Divergent. This is also the
faction that Tris brother, Caleb, chooses at the Choosing Ceremony. Im not sure why he chose it, but I
have a feeling it wasnt to be with a giant group of smart individuals. Or maybe it was, I might never truly
know for sure. (it doesnt explain in great detail why exactly he chose in the first book to be in Erudite.)
Four
Four is Tobias nickname because he only has four fears. As Dauntless, you are to endure a series of Fear
Landscapes of your own when you first join the faction. In the landscape is all your fears laid out in front
of you. You are supposed to get through the fear landscapes in order to pass the Dauntless initiation.
When Tobias Eaton went through his fear landscapes as an initiate, he found out he only had four fears.
One of them was his father because his father used to abuse him. Another one of his fears is tight spaces.

Glory
In the novel, Tris and her group of rebellion members find success and glory when they have finally
defeated Jeanine. Later towards the end of the novel Tris comes face to face with Jeanine in a final battle.
Tris ends the battle by defeating Jeanine and ending her life. Afterwards, Tobias mom steps in as the new
leader and takes over what Jeanine has left behind. However she runs everything the way she wants to.
The remaining Divergent are now safer than they were before and Jeanine is dead, however things in the
hands of Evelyn (Tobias mom) may not be what everyone had hoped. Tris is glad to have Jeanine gone,
but unsure of Evelyns true intentions. She has been known to be suspicious throughout the novel leading
up to this newfound leadership role.

Hesitation
In the book, there are several times when hesitation takes over. For instance, there are many times when
Tris is thinking about certain things, but the hesitation she has almost takes over completely making her
back away from other decisions of hers. At one point in the book she is hesitant to shoot a gun because of
a past experience with a friend that she had to kill for the greater good. She had to go face to face against
him during a war between the Abnegation and Dauntless. She ended up ending his life. She has had to
carry around that guilt for a long time.
Insurgent
This is the title of the book. By definition, as an adjective it means rising in active revolt. As a noun it
means a rebel or revolutionary. This is a perfect title for the book because the whole idea is that there is a
group of all different factions that are joined together to stop the main evil, which would be Jeanine. She
is trying to take out both the Divergent and Tris with her group of friends and fighters. Tris group is
trying to stop Jeanine from destroying the Divergents, therefore resulting in a rebellion of sorts. This is
why the title fits well with the strong idea erupting throughout the book.

Jeanine
As the main antagonist of the book, Jeanine finds herself fighting to eliminate all the Divergents in the
universe of Insurgent. She is out to destroy them all. She is someone who is very organized and wants
everything to be perfect, so when there are Divergents popping up everywhere and breaking the ways of
the faction system she is not happy. She is determined to make things the way she wants them to be.
Jeanine is not a good person as shown by everything that she has down. She has killed so many people,
such as Tris parents, and has hurt even more that it is very reasonable to classify her as the main
antagonist.
Killed Emotions
In the story, Tris struggles with her emotions. When he goes up against Jeanine, she manipulates Tris
emotions so that she is more vulnerable. This is so Tris is easier to defeat. However, Jeanines plan doesn't
work and Tris becomes aware of what she is doing. She is able to ignore what Jeanine is attempting and
fight her. She ends up winning against Jeanine and everything is finally okay. Or so she thought, before
Evelyn (Tobias mom) takes over and rules with an iron fist.

Losses
In Insurgent, there is a number of uncountable losses. There are many people who unfortunately died.
Some are close to Tris and close to the story. I dont want to give too much away, so Im definitely not
going to list the names of the main characters who have been killed or have died in this book. As for other
non main characters who have died, there have got to be upwards of thousands, if not tens of thousands of
lives, that have been lost because of the destruction that has been caused in Insurgent. It devastating to
everyone that is affected by it.
Marcus
Marcus is Tobias Eatons father. Throughout the book, he is not considered a good person. He was not
someone that should be trusted because of certain things that happened in the past with his son and other
actions of his. For instance, a fear landscape of his sons is Tobias being hurt by Marcus. His actions have
had terrible consequences which have resulted in distrust from others and a growing suspicion he is up to
something more than he leads on. He is one to have an eye kept on him.

Negligence
Peter is a character with a decent sense of negligence. He has had so many actions that he has no care for
what these could result in. For example, in the novel, he messed with Tris so many times by teasing her
has been an overall jerk. Marcus is also one to have actions that he doesnt care about their outcome at all.
An example for him would be when he hurts his son. He has no regard for the consequences of this abuse.

Objection
An example of objection in the novel would be when the factionless (the people who don't belong to a
faction) disagree with everything Jeanine is displaying. She is trying to show that the Divergent are bad,
but a good majority of the factionless are Divergent themselves. They do not believe that Jeanine should
be doing any of the things she is doing. They decide to object to what she believes and try to help Tris
finish her once and for all. They accomplish that by leading Tris to where she battle Jeanine and wins
successfully. Everything is restored and all is well once again

Priors
The Priors are Tris and her family. Her family consisted of her mom, her dad, her brother, Caleb, and
herself. Her family began to fall apart when her parents were killed in the war against Abnegation and
Dauntless. He mother was shot by a soldier outside when Tris was talking with her. Her father was shot
inside the Erudite headquarters when he, Tobias, and Tris were trying to get to Jeanine to stop her. It was
very hard on both Caleb and especially Tris.

Quick Thinking
Tris and her group of rebels have had to gain quick thinking when going up against everything theyve
had to fight. Its too difficult to fight for what you believe in effectively without thinking quickly on your
feet. I can talk from experience because I dont always think very fast a hundred percent of the time. Even
though I havent been fighting, I have done an intense game of kahoot, and it has taken a lot of hard
thinking at a fast pace. It takes some concentration to think as fastly as its needed.
Resistance
Tris and her rebellion group had a resistance against what Jeanine was doing. They did not agree with it
even a meager amount. They did not believe that what she was doing was the right thing to do. She had
no reason to get rid of innocent people because of their personality and not conforming to the standards of
the Divergent universe. Not to mention that Jeanine hurt Tris beyond repair. She was at the point where
she would stop at nothing to make sure Jeanine was stopped.

Spy
In Insurgent, Tris brother Caleb is almost like a spy for Jeanine. She has taken him under her wing since
her plans for the Divergent has ensued. Tris learns of this and she begins to realize he can no longer be
trusted. Jeanine is Tris enemy, so the fact that her own brother is siding with her is devastating. In the
book, Caleb helps Jeanine to get to Tris. Later on, Jeanine attempts to kill Tris, however it fails. Tris
realizes now that it will be virtually impossible to trust Caleb more now than ever.
Tris
The protagonist of the story. Throughout the story she has grown to be stronger than she used to be. When
she was still in Abnegation, she was young and innocent. Now that she has become a Dauntless, she has
become bold and daring. This is the type of character development that you would expect to see in a girl
like this that has gone through as much war and violence as she has. I think it adds a lot of
characterization to Tris by showing how her emotions and the things that have happened around her have
shaped who she is by the end of the novel.

Utmost Respect
In the story, Jeanine is someone who is to be treated with a lot of respect. If you are to get on her bad side
by not showing her the respect she demands, that is not a good thing. She is a leader who is very powerful
and to wrong her is at most a death wish. She is tested many times in the book. For example, there are
many instances where people have not treated her with the respect they were intended to and they were
not very happy with what happened to them next. Her wrath is not something to be messed with.

Vengeance
In Insurgent, Tris and Jeanine have been vowing to get vengeance on one another, They have been
fighting it out for a long time, which is why Tris is very relieved when it's all over. I believe that Tris has
the biggest anger against Jeanine. Jeanine has taken so many sentimental things away from Tris, such as
her parents and a few of her friends. Jeanine has not only taken away some of the ones she loves, but has
also thrown Tris home into full on chaos. Jeanine is not someone who is to be forgiven for all this,
especially by Tris.

Will
Will is a character in the first book of the series (Divergent) that was the cause of Tris hesitation to shoot
a gun. During a brief war between the Abnegation and the Dauntless, Tris was faced against a mind-
controlled Will. He was aiming a gun at her and was going to shoot, however Tris beat him to it. When
she shot him and the bullet hit in a vital area, to which he later died. She has been haunted by this
memory ever since. She has, however, gotten over her fear of shooting a gun.

XYZ
Young Love
Tris and Tobias are a couple. They have been in love since the middle of the previous book. They met
during Tris initiation into Dauntless. They instantly bonded and soon became boyfriend and girlfriend.
Tobias is the type of boyfriend that cares about Tris very much and is sure that she stays safe. He has to
make sure she doesnt do anything that could get her killed and Tris is the same way about him. It is a
cute relationship and adds a little bit of light and happiness to the novel.
